BTW, I violated the rules for my pic, so that should actually give some hints and make it easier.

Milwaukee (downtown) Intersection of Broadway and Wisconsin av. Recognized the building with the green roof.....and of course the lake in the background. I also never liked that addition on the building in the center. Okay, guess:
  3. I don't think even their government can bail them out

I can't believe it has been this long since I posted it. I've been on urbanohio for awhile. December 2006. Awful lighting, and I'm assuming up late from architecture More updated photo January 2008. Taken on our away to the International Auto Show in Detroit

Look what I found! Oops, wrong forum

I think I posted a mirror shot awhile back and it scared the hell out of people.

I'd like to meet the architect face-to-face and asked why they mutilated that building. Sad thing is, these acts still continue in surprising ways. I drove past a really well designed strip mall built in the 70's with all these interesting concrete geometries. It was being clad over with fake brick and jumbo cornices.

It's incredible the size these courthouses got in comparison to the rest of town.

^ I do too, but I bought it at a North Face outlet for 1/100th the price everyone else paid for it. I'll tell you what drives me nuts. In the architecture program, everyone thinks they should wear black to reviews and crits. I deliberately violated these unwritten fashion guidelines students discuss prior to presentation. You know, your work is supposed to speak louder than how you are dressed. I never had a problem. The best project review I ever had was in jeans and a pistons jersey.
  11. I felt very productive today at work keeping what economy we have propped up. I found a cardboard box, and a hole puncher and proceeded to make thousands of dots, because that's what the federal government wants me to do.

I have a work-study job currently in a printing/convenience store in the Art & Architecture building at my U. I had an art student go ballistic at me for not serving vegetarian pizza. I said "We serve it once and awhile, but it doesn't sell fast enough." She replies "Well, it's stupid for you not to serve vegetarian pizza in a building with art students." I didn't even get a chance to reply when another customer yelled "Who said it was for you? The pizza is for the urban planners, and WE WANT MEAT DAMNIT!" So yeah, maybe it wasn't your cup of tea, although I do still have a high respect for art students, just a bit moody at times though....but that's what makes their work interesting.

Uhm, I'm going to be in Philly and NYC next week: 15-19. U of M has fall 'study' break, which means the student population either ups and leaves for Chicago or the East coast for the weekend. Ha..........study.... mrnyc, I've been to Chelsea piers before and I guess there is no way to definitely tell. I think of would have remembered seeing the entrances exposed, but if they were there, definitely well covered up.
  14. Wow, the federal building looks completely different during the day. I've actually been up by it a couple years back and it looked beautiful in the evening sunset....probablly because all the lights were on too, and the facade didn't look so blank.

That last shot is pretty cool. It almost reminds me of San Francisco. Too bad those entryways couldn't be saved.

Agree. I forgot to mention how much I love Grand Rapids. The growth there is incredible, and they are not far from some of Michigan's best beaches. Lots of historic homes, and excellent downtown density. Not to mention I love their plans for a modern streetcar system.
  17. That garage is just a step down from some of the lofts I've seen!
  18. This is actually all really the truth. On my lunchbreak I used to see the homeless on the piers beneath Genesee Ave bridge fishing for catfish in the dioxin poisoned river where they'd then prepare their catch in a neighboring abandoned warehouse, which I suppose is palace place to live. I think I read somewhere about some teenagers attempting to live at a Meijer department store somewhere in the Chicago area for over 24 hours, or maybe even more than that. The staff were completely unaware, or probably didn't care. But they'd go and buy food and consume it in the furniture section where they had their own living room set up.

This project is now dead. Developers wanted to scale it down to a parking garage. City said absolutely not.
  20. If the tall tower is inspired by the Alhambra in spain, thank God my apartment building (named the Alhambra after inspiration) doesn't look like that lol. CD changer is a nice characterization Chris. 1 Dubai looks okay. For a mega complex it, sure beats the RenCen. Although it looks like a glass powerplant smokestacks complete with utility scaffolding in between and the opening at the bottom for exhaust intake. I've never liked the whole "inspired by" fluff, unless it's the literal replication of details comprising an entirely new structure. For example, I think it's silly the Chicago spire was inspired by a campfire made by native Americans. A lie! You were taking a dump, and came up with a spirally design because you thought it looked cool. The source of inspiration is entirely irrelevant. I'm glad in architecture school we were asked to stay away from these types of "inspirations" and strive to be contextual and original, yet innovative and bold. I don't think New Dubai has to worry about being contextual since alot of everything is less than a decade old, and the historic districts are located much further north, but you see the same architects trying to pull this b.s. in the U.S. and half the time it comes out looking awful. "My design is inspired by the pre-settlement vegetation of Manhattan" BTW, is that Emaar's headquarters in the foreground of the photo above or just one of their properties they are marketing. I would have expected their offices to be in a more signature building.

I always wondered if in the morning before the A&F stores open, they walk around and spray the cologne everywhere. I mean they must use 10 bottles. It spreads into the mall concourse at least 150 feet in each direction.
  22. Maybe beneath an overpass. I've seen some elaborate setups. And there's always 'homeless' making money beneath the 8-Mile / 75 stack in Detroit. Special bonus if it's beneath a bridge "down by the river." Why? Fishing. I can live off catfish.
  23. Porn business? LOL no, but perhaps I'd make more money pursuing this avenue.

Chicago. And maybe Detroit for no particular reason. I've never actually lived in the city of Detroit, but it feels like home living nearby. I think I'll miss it if I choose to move to the East Coast, but at least close enough if I live in Chicago when I graduate. (I voted Chicago btw)
  25. I wouldn't do anything, so far "bad-economy proof" specifically where I am.
