Forbes: America's Fastest Dying Cities
Well the fortunate thing for a lot of these cities are they are at the bottom of the curve, so losses have slowed... at least with Detroit and few others on that list. Consider how Chicago lost a million people like Detroit did in the past 40 years, and now Chicago is growing.

Idiotic construction
Depending on the cost of infrastructure, although I'm going to assume each way, ripping out the street and sidewalks is the best alternative. But it's still going to cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. I don't understand the big garage in front phenomenon either seicer. Depending on where you live it lowers your home value and is an awful feature when the house goes up on the market. The correct way is to make the living quarters more prominent, or locate the garage entries to the side of the house.

Speeding Tickets
I haven't read all the posts so I apologize if it's a repeat. Since going that much over the speed limit (in a 25 mph zone) is clearly your fault, it is not something you will win with IF the cop shows up. But taking it to court regardless will help. I'm going to assume this is the same for Ohio as Michigan. But if you decide to fight it, those points may not gone onto your license until after the decision is made in court (that's only if you mail in the form wishing to contest it). Court schedulings can take awhile, and depending on where you got it, they might let you pick the day. It helped me. My insurance did not go up after getting a couple tickets because I pushed one of them until after my renewal. I had stupid tickets though.... like no left turn or no right on red. I did get a speeding ticket though once. 101 mph in a 70 (I was in high school) The cop gave me a break because the average speed of traffic at the time was 90 mph and I was passing someone before the lane ended. I was ticked, but he actually gave a nod when he said I could contest it. Never showed up, and the ticket he gave me said I was doing 75 just in case. Those speed demon days are in the past. I don't think I've broken 81 mph in 4 years.

Detroit
That castle one is the GAR building. It was for awhile owned by the city, picked up by Ilitch and of course sits empty. I told everybody a couple years ago, it would sit empty for years and I got a lot of flack for saying it. Wel..... it's still empty, but it appears it's red now so something is being done. Oh, and the burned out Forest Arms Apartments in the last photos. Renovate faster damnit! Alright, I'll get back to playing my piano in the grand lobby of Detroit's Lee Plaza

I'm going to guess they made that with cardboard tubes or something. Imagine all that trouble... and the look on the homeowners face. "And this is for? ? ?"

Columbus: Demolition Watch
Hayward replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Architecture, Environmental, and PreservationWhy doesn't OSU just not building parking structures. Force their employees to park in a commuter lot far away and take a shuttle. I can see parking being necessary in the private sector, but when dealing with a university, you don't have to offer these types of incentives to get people to work for you.

rockaway beach, queens, ny
A couple years ago I visited there and noticed some of the projects along the beach were being demoed. There were several very large open empty spaces. Are they continuing with this? Nice photos!

mike tyson's abandoned ohio mansion
I'd demolish the large additions. And they do appear to be additions when you look at the full set of photos. The original house has potential, but I never understood how someone could enjoy living in a space so large. You lose the comfort a proportionately scaled house offers. I don't mean big houses are bad. I mean rooms way out of scale are bad. I agree with David, Keep the original part and demolish all the rest. It's an architectural disaster and has no renovation potential. It's cheaper to start over and make something better....and also a lot better for the environment since it would cost way to much to head/ac the place as it stands.

Idiotic construction
Thanks for posting this. I remember seeing these photos a couple years ago, and I had been looking for them since to show someone. I like how the revision call sign in the last pic got confused for a step. What an awesome error in response to an error for an error lol. Fortunately, they didn't cut curly lines like some revision clouds EDIT: Nvm, look what I found!!!

Urban Ohio "Picture Of The Day"
Man, some really nice photography on this page. It ended up being a pleasant day out, so during my lunch break, I went to the Saginaw Zoo, not far from my office building. I borrowed the company camera lol. Unfortunately the last person forgot to charge the battery, so I only got two pics. Weather permitting, I'll get some photos of Llamas and Kangaroos on Friday

My New Apartment
I was really surprised by this place. The building is almost 80 years old, but it's in good condition. It smells clean on the inside. Not like the typical rotting student tenements. The landlord had actually cleaned the place. The floors were polished up, carpets were cleaned and vacuumed, and the bathroom has new fixtures with the exception of the tub. Granted the appliances are old, but as I said they work. The only letdown is the tiny icebox in the fridge. Not sure I'm a fan of the glass doors everywhere. I'm going to have some friends temporarily living with me for the first month so that will all have to get covered. "I'm going to bed, so shut up" Closes the glass door and flicks on tv in bedroom. "You're not sleeping, I can see you!!" I googled my building and found quite a bit of info. http://www.aadl.org/gallery/buildings/hhaa069.gif.html

My New Apartment
I'm moving in again to a new place for the 08-09 school year I don't plan on bringing too much, but I do want to make it comfortable I don't dig the peach/yellowish walls ...bleh... That might have to change. Here's a picture of the building (this photo is not mine) And my apartment: Extremely ultra-modern appliances from 1978. Hey, they work pretty damn well!:

I remember seeing these photos awhile back. I'm surprised that unattended property hasn't been smashed to pieces yet.

If you like to bike, next time you are in Detroit...
There actually used to be more bridges. Tons more. How about I do a pre-transition photo thread when i get the time? The Dequindre cut was where both freight and passenger rail lines used to be. There used to be a large Depot down near the Renaissance Center. When that was demolished, there was a plan to put the station inside the RenCen. It never happened, but both General Motors and other private company leaders have floated the idea of light rail up to New Center and beyond. There are so many light rail proposals right now in Detroit, that I guess it's a matter of seeing which ones will be built, and where additional lines will go.

Ride on the Dequindre Cut path. Brand new. They also preserved the graffiti throughout. It looks awesome. Light rail is planned for the otherside

Wooster to Pittsburgh in 1985
It's really rare that you get to see a set of photos of city on the internet from back in the 1980's. I think this is just one example of what we will be seeing in the future. A month after month collection of photographed cities over time.

Downtown Miami (lots of skyline shots)
This reminds me of the Aqua Tower going up in Chicago, except this building appears to have much nicer, less distractive railings

1911 bungalow interior illustrations
It appears the ceilings in the yellow room are around 7' (noting the height of the bedroom entry door) if this a concern to you in remodeling.

I just relaxed by the park with the giant stamp in downtown Cleveland
I had a bad incident nearby that once. I suppose this is the perfect time to tell the story. I was visiting Cleveland and brought my bike. I was riding around taking photos and I also had my ipod on. Well, I wanted to take a photo of the stamp, so while still moving, I pulled my camera up and it caught the headphones wire. The earbud fell down and got caught in the spokes of the wheel, and I went forward over the handlebars. The camera wasn't damaged fortunately, but i had to listen to music through one headphone the rest of the day. Bah. And the stupid photo of the stamp didn't even come out all that good. What a waste. The end.

Mall
Alright.. More mall photos Surrounding the mall is new development. In fact since it's closure, it's easy to pass by because it is now blocked by quite a few buildings The grass is always greener on the other side! Thom McAn You can still see where displays and counters were from the light fixtures above I'd be shocked if this was a store. It's incredibly narrow But there are shelves and pegboard Did you hear? Penney's just installed a new atrium! The court area where the JC Penney Entrance was. In the movie, they placed Jewel's sign above the entrance, swapping locations for the end grocery store crash.: Some more super-up-to-date decor! What was once the entrance to Turn Style. I believe the only location of this now defunct chain that was never converted into anything else. Most became Targets, KMarts, etc Yikes: Another slowly collapsing store. It's eerie seeing the unpainted drywall, I'm guessing like that since the mall's opening. The 'newer' wing of the mall. TurnStyle's display 'windows' to the left. Elevator entrance on the second floor of JCPenney. Probably the only thing in the entire building that could still work. Nice Orange Julius color scheme. I think this might have been where Wards used to be. It was supposed to be renovated, but caught fire and burned down entirely Destroyed exterior. Once a copper roof, obviously scrapped.

My thoughts on Cincinnati
I'd really love to try biking in Cincy. Glad it's not too bad with traffic, although I feel the hills will be a bigger challenge.
