Cleveland vs. Chicago - my comparison
Actually, my recent ones came out clear. I suppose that warrants a photo thread. and also the weather on my recent visits to the Chi have been so-so. Typically they are usually sunny. But Cleveland has never let me down so far.

I remember one of our dormitory buildings was quarantined at U of M for people with stomach flu. They honestly had it coming though, since most people know how to keep their hallways clean. The hall in particular where it originated was disgusting. The RA of that hallway was relieved of their position for not asking his residents to keep the hallway clean and failing to report the illness to the university (being fully aware people were extremely sick in his hall)

Pics of your two wheel human powered ride
Wish I could take a picture, but mine got stolen, which is a huge surprise because it was a rusty piece of junk and didn't work anyway. I will photograph my new bike when i get the chance though!

What field are you in?
Well, I guess I'm doing another summer at an architecture firm. Nothing wrong with that, I love designing buildings. Because I made no attempts to look for any planning jobs, I guess I'll have to wait till next year.

Just stomped out a roach the other day. Although the biggest problem was spiders. We had a few and did nothing about it since they took care of the ant problem, then there was close to a hundred. They say you are never more than 6 feet from a spider, but there was one on my computer screen. After smashing all of them, the problem was resolved. Just destroy all insects with force David!

One thing I don't understand though is how drinking can get so bad that people trash the place to hell in which they live. We've had some pretty intense parties at our house last year, one an open house party with an estimated 400 in attendance in the downstairs apartment. People were pretty wild, but the worst problem we dealt with was all the spilled beer on the wood floors. It was an easy cleanup in a matter of hours. We didn't know half the people that came through but at least they didn't puke all over the bathroom or steal sh!t, like I hear at so many other universities. I know University of Michigan isn't the most intensive party school, but at least we still have fun and not have to deal with the worst later. And btw, the best parties involve: Watered down beer from a keg gets old after awhile AJ93, I think I know what exactly you are talking about. I've seen those mossy plants in toilets in basement bathrooms. Something that will never be explained. I think the biggest problem we had at our rental house last year was some tree root growing in the sewer line. We first noticed when water wouldn't go down the drain in the showers. Toilets had enough pressure to do the job fortunately, but eventually the plumbing broke in the basement and flooded it all with raw watery sh!t. Thankfully our landlord got on it quick and the smell never rose upstairs. The house did smell like bleach for a week though.

That's pretty bad C-Dawg. I spent a winter semester in a fraternity house and I was thankful alcohol was banned on the premises. It's amazing what it could do, insurance plummets, the house stays perfectly clean. I seriously can't recall any problems that got me upset. If we drank, we'd take our parties to a designated house where other brothers lived.

New York City: Developments and News
It's okay as long as it doesn't look like death on the skyline as the renderings suggest. I'd prefer shine over rusted razor blades.

As far ammentities: Expensive fridges that distribute 4 different types of ice Air conditioning (central air) Free laundry machines 44" flat screen tv (this came with the house! We do not own this!!!) Surround sound Cable and data hookups in all rooms Brand new furniture Garbage disposal and washing machine (rare in Ann Arbor student housing since these get broken easily) Most landlords would call our landlords foolish since students can be lazy and dirty and most likely to break these appliances. In fact, they shouldn't have spent so much on putting all this brand new stuff in. They went into debt and the house got foreclosed upon. Remember that thread? Our rent is average for the city. On a higher end, my last apartment was $900/month in a subdivided, ill maintained house. I'm not concerned about spending a $1000/month by myself on an apartment. I just don't want to waste money on food I don't eat.

Florida Guy, did you go as far as to jump out onto the caisson in the middle of the water? I always get the perfect shots from there, and the boats come really close. Make the bridge operator nervous.

So I'm moving out of my rental house now. I shared it with 4 other people. We are cool, the school year was alright, we had a couple arguments, but overall it worked out well except..... ....having too many housemates actually cost me more. Over the year, I've been adding up my losses, and they reached a total of $1400.00! In other words, if I hadn't moved in with 4 other people, I actually would have saved! - Rent would have been the same, even if I lived alone. In pricey cities, houses costs substantially more than apartments. In most college towns, this isn't the case, but we moved into a neighborhood where not a lot of students live. We had many rental options, but we chose to pay at the end of the year exactly $42,000 to our landlord. Our house offered amenities hardly any student off campus would ever experience. So every penny was worth it. But it doesn't take much to impress me, I could have definitely settled for less. - You can't split the cost of food evenly over 5 people. Impossible, especially when you are on different schedules. I worked until 9:00. I ate out. I only ate breakfast and lunch and we all know that eating exclusively PBJ, a banana, a bowl of oatmeal and a glass of milk every day of the week does not cost $50. Beer is expensive, and I never drank it because I worked on homework late. Preach this mealplan all you want, it never works. - Air conditioning, gas, electric, water. I take short showers, I can keep the air conditioning off, and I shut off the lights when I'm gone. They can't. - TV 44" energy hog, extended cable package with DVR and HD-TV. During the school year, I watch hardly any tv except for ESPN for about 15 minutes (I can catch in on a TV before I get on the bus after work though). I watch a few channels that don't require cable also. In other words, I never really needed at TV at all. - Borrowed and never returned. I'm not going through my roomates' stuff, but I've boxed everything up in my room and I'm missing an incredible amount of stuff, most of it adapter cables and DVDs. We own some of the same stuff. They didn't steal anything, but mistakingly thought it was their own, unaware that others owned the same devices/DVD's as well. $1400 down the drain is huge. I could have bought a new computer. It also doesn't account for the fact that we can't sublet the house. Had this been an individual apartment, it would have been subleased long ago. So technically the grand total is $4000 in losses. I'm not angry or pissed. It was mine own decision, and I did get a lot of financial help from my university so these extra costs were absorbed pretty well, but still. Next year, I will pay the same rent for a single 1 bedroom apartment. My heat, water, and electric is included. Internet is shared across the building, and $7 is to be paid every month for internet to my landlord. Because of this, I can trim off about $100/month I'm shelling out in utilities currently. I guess all I can say is, while it may look like you are saving money by living with a bunch of other people, in certain circumstances, that's not always the case. Goodbye 543 Elizabeth, you were a comfortable house Hello Kingsley Apartments (not mine) -

Urban Ohio "Picture Of The Day"
Nothing too photographically stunning, but this may be my home for the summer. I'm thinking about renting the apartment above the store with the green canopies in the dark redish brown building. Located in Saginaw, MI. Thought about living a mile north downtown, but government and commercial office buildings bore me.

I agree. I don't know what to say about that building. It has beautiful form, but the half-ass repairs made on the exterior ruin it.

old parking garages
Reminded me of a time actually saw a van lose its roof on a concrete beam in a parking structure. Ceiling height is less about cars and more about people in parking structures these days. They have to be designed so that people can't hit their heads on the light fixtures. Not to mention, people feel more secure in higher ceiling-airy garages You resolve that, you can fit a lot of SUV's
