  1. I did the following 1. Avoided driving for an entire month. This was actually because my vehicle was having problems. But I walked and used mass transit to get everywhere. I saved an incredible amount of money also. 2. Our house switched to CFL, 3. We also placed Plexiglas over the windows. They are historic so we can't ask to have them replaced, but we noticed are furnace turns on less. That's about it for now I guess. I mean we aren't recycling any more than we used to

Hmm this photo thread gets interesting everyday. Good thing there is strange photos of Hayward
  4. Great shots. Getting up early and taking photos in the freezing cold. I've always thought about doing that while laying in my nice warm bed, but couldn't even get to setting foot on the floor. Awesome work

That new high density development is awesome.

That guy was literally made famous nationally creating that video. He's equally as nutty in real life. But that crap pays since his sales at his mall have increased substantially. They also sell guns btw, just like a real mini-mall!
  7. 7' is remarkably narrow. In the US., that's the legal minimum dimension for a bedroom. My college dorm room built in 1907 was 9' x 16', a decent sized space for one person, but any smaller, no.

BTW, here's the building my housemates and I are feuding over. Front of Building 1, which will be the only one available this fall. Meaning only 1 senior RA position available. Buildings 2 & 3 which won't be finished Back of building 1
  9. Awesome set!
  10. Wow, awesome neighborhood!

I have a great story and I'm pissed off with my housemate. So it's time to look for housing next year and I figured I'd go back to getting my own place, but this time in a brand new building. No more 1920's or 1880's homes for now. So they are building this new privately owned student housing complex on campus. It hasn't gotten much attention, but that's alright. Only 1 of the 3 buildings will be ready for next fall, and I'd like to get in before it fills up. I didn't keep it quiet from my housemates because they are all undergraduate seniors, and I figured they'd go off to other colleges or start working in another state that has jobs. I did mention to them that if I became a "senior advisor" I guess another term for RA, I'd get the housing free. I really don't want to pay to live there because the rent is $1000/month, and it doesn't even have parking. I mentioned that I was really hoping to get selected since I'm paying for grad school all by myself. My housemates slammed the project and tried to convince me it was an overrated / bad place to live. I ignored them, but guess what? They go off to the sales center and pick up contracts and information without telling me! I found out when one of them carelessly left one of them out. I also found out that one of my housemates has applied for the RA position! Or not just applied, but is one step closer to taking the position. Here's the thing, he lied to them. He isn't going to college or even working here in Ann Arbor. The loophole is he doesn't have to sign a lease yet to get selected. He said he would then drop out at the last minute if he went somewhere else, which is a 99% chance of happening. How does this affect me? By then I will have to have signed a lease to get a spot, but I'd be paying the outrageous rent. So he basically took my chances of getting the position of away from me. Even if I applied, and he dropped out, I wouldn't get selected until it was too late. It appears it's just him who asked for this position considering they are very close to giving him the job, and he's only met with them once. I hate it when people try to steal my shine!

This building was topped out with the facade complete, but then it collapsed toward the end of summer. Work cannot continue on this structure until it is deemed safe. So yeah.... either it will be demolished or hopefully finished. I fairly certain they will continue work soon.

It varies. It usually depends on the client and who's funding it...such as a government grant to an organization or just building something for a few people. Right now I'm working one for a research group at my university and getting paid $25/hour (from a government grant again). The most I've ever made off one site was $6,500 . The lowest I've ever made was $300. It seems like a great way to make money while you are in school, but it's a huge pressure that never lets off. The clients really want their websites up as soon as possible and don't quite understand the workload. That's why I try to avoid making them unless the project is really really easy and the pay is excellent.
  14. I don't care what the exterior looks like considering there isn't much around it with good architecture either. Plunk this in a Midwestern downtown and I'd probably have a fit. It must be the mostly windowless exterior that bothers me about the stadium. It is Arizona though and I'm sure letting to much sun in would heat that building like an oven.

I think you are seeing it as it is. The retail, office, and lobby portion is where that empty lot is. The actual theater was separated from the main building by an alley.

I remember once a long time ago I wanted to build websites. I never picked up on that. Now I hate building websites and people are actually coming forward and paying me to do them. At this rate, I'm getting paid very well to the point I could consider this an actual income. But I hate doing it!

The sun was shinin' out of Hayward's window this morning.
  18. what would it be? I'm going to have an architecture and planning degree when I'm done with grad school next year, but I'd rather do something else. If I had the money, I would open a business that does laser cutting, routering, large printing (plots), possibly advertising sign boards. They are services that I believe are becoming more popular. Laser cutting could be for anything. Creating decals, signs, making models of buildings for architecture firms or hobbyists. Typical rates are $1/min of use including setup time. A CNC router could be used for a multitude of things such as making wall panels, again.. signs, models, and furniture. I already have a lot of experience using these machines (but very limited experience in their maintenance). I'm not sure about printing though. I want to get into a business where people won't complain to me when their stuff doesn't look perfect. I work a side job at a printing shop right now and it's pretty easy, but people get upset over the most ridiculous things, when what is wrong with it is actually their fault for having a bad file. So I might avoid this, but it is sure to bring in lots of cash if you are competitive enough with places that overcharge for plotting like Kinkos. I know that a good laser cutter costs about $10,000. That's really not all that bad actually since that is basically what makes my business. This is all my dream business, but I guess I should be putting my degrees to work in the meantime. :|
  19. It's really interesting, but when you are at least 200 feet within the stadium it doesn't look as big as it does from the inside. Very interesting.
  20. Since this thread resurfaced, looks like I missed this. My friends and I had purchased condemned property on Detroit's East Side. A small fire damaged an exterior wall, causing it to eventually collapse. Then the scrappers came and took all what was valuable. The demise of the property was partially our fault, and everybody elses. Getting the money to start paying for it was taking forever, and it's impossible to secure anything in Detroit without spending a fortune on advanced security. We gave the property back to the city, and the house was demolished last month. We had absolutely no intention of ever living there. I mentioned above I lived in a subdivided house with individual apartments. I'm in a new place now which is a house with many bedrooms. I'm living here with 4 other friends. It's been nice, but I'm ready to switch back to having my own place. I'm stopping by the sales center tomorrow to look at some higher end 1 bedroom apartments. Hayward is ready to step it up to the $1000-1200 a month range. A reason why I hate Ann Arbor when the same type of units are going for the same price in downtown Chicago, BAH!
  21. I swear that some of the stuff on youtube becomes more hardcore by the month. People are always trying to take stunts a step further to impress the masses. Posted awhile ago, but recently resurfaced is this video of two people rigging and then blowing up a fridge under a bridge. Okay, while it may not seem all that different from setting off firecrackers in a storm drain at first sight, this is actually placing canisters of flammable liquid inside of an inconspicuous container (a fridge) and placing it beneath an overpass. It couldn't be a more stupid idea. While these people obviously knew it would do no harm to the bridge, I have feeling that a bunch of idiots will follow with similar experiments and someone is actually going to get hurt. In no way is this "friggin awesome" as so many of the comments are stating. Am I overreacting? I'm more concerned about the precedent this is setting for misguided youth. Had this experiment been done in the US, I'm sure these people would be behind bars. - damn i sound old -

^ Correct. It's one of the most depopulated areas on the SW side. Not sure though what's on the Canadian side. I need to look at a map.

It's currently 3:47 a.m and my housemates are playing Call of Duty 4 outside my bedroom. Our living room is equipped with surround sound. Gunshots and explosives ring out. I can't sleep. Fortunately class doesn't start till 1:00 pm tomorrow, but I'm tired.

More pictures will come soon. I was really hoping to impress you all with photos of the abandoned Brach's candy factory on Cicero Ave, but the guard dog signs made me a bit nervous.
