  1. Since I'm going to create a short series, I'm reposting this thread which was lost Fortunately I had it saved in notepad :-D Here's some photos of a two block stretch of Warren Ave near California. This area is known as East Garfield Park and is not too far west of downtown Chicago. The neighborhood has suffered some neglect in its time, but is now coming back to life, and many renovations are taking place. The Sears Tower is visible in the distance. The one on the left is being renovated

^ Those people are supposed to. And yes! They've started up their cars only to slide right down into the car in front of them. I hear the sound of cars getting rear-ended every morning.

Yeah, it's going to be interesting when the online network generation grows up. Although the unwritten rule is that when you get married, you are supposed to ditch your myspace page, although maintaining a facebook profile is ok.

I'd just like to vouch for apple and say that their products are very durable despite that my ipod video is in its dying stretch. I've had an ipod video for two years. It was purchased with insurance money when my friend dropped my last mp3 player on a carpeted floor and it cracked the screen. Anyway, when I got my ipod video, I was extremely broke, and wouldn't save up enough to get a cheap case, because I wanted the most expensive one. In the meantime, I would try and be careful with my ipod avoiding scratches, and definitely drops. Well, the time came when it got a little scratch, then more, then a ton more, and I just decided to not care anymore. Since then it's been exposed to harsh Michigan weather, dropped more times than songs it has played, and provided me with thousands of hours of listening. Its worse falls were off my fire escape onto the concrete sidewalk 12 feet below, and then off my bike at 25 mph. It still worked just fine, and there are no significant cosmetic or hardware damages, just quite a few scratches which can be polished off. Lately, the weather and use has taken it's toll, the hard drive inside freezes and stalls alot. To unfreeze it, I'd hit it against the center console of my car, which worked just fine until the 300th hit, where it just didn't want to play any more songs. I did a little reading on the internet, and then consulted my intelligent housemates for an answer. Both sources turned up the same info: Place it flat in your palm, and slam it against a table. The table slam worked, and it's stopped skipping for about 3 months, but it recently started again. It seemed totalad at this point giving me the sadface. My housemate was being loud and obnoxious while I was trying to study for my last exam, so I threw the ipod at him, missed and it slammed into the wall pretty hard. Again, it now works and has been playing for a week without skipping. Despite these minor mechanical problems, it's interesting how durable these devices are. BTW, hayward is not normally destructive with his electronic devices, but is a little careless when using the ipod.

You guys are right on my Saginaw, MI threads. Both Lorain and Saginaw look very much alike. At least Lorain's downtown looks far more intact.

I don't know about other cities, but I think the residents of Detroit's neighborhoods have gotten used to all the photography. The realize why people are there, capturing what is left of the neighborhood that has fallen apart around them. Photographers even get ignored coming face to face with scrappers committing a crime (who also have guns) in vacant buildings. Everyone has their own agenda I guess. Typically, I don't like pointing my camera out of a car window. It shows you are an outsider and don't have the guts to walk around the neighborhood when you are attempting to show that you actually "care" about it. A lot of locals take that as a huge slap in the face. Not to say that its any safer though. Usually I ride my bike around to get photos of these areas. It somewhat more difficult to get jacked on a bike.
  8. Those steps off the street are interesting. I've never seen anything like that.
  9. Great photo tour!

I don't know what it is, but taking pictures of suburbia always make me feel more nervous than in the hood.

This thread is like a bunch of 6th graders looking through an Atlas for dirty words, lol.
  15. I'm thinking of buying another string to help boost my grade. I'm thinking a string of white, maybe some other color for variety? On the serious side, here's the tree at my parents house from last year. Hayward cut it down!
  16. I think MCS will be renovated eventually, but Tiger stadium has no chance. I think plans are already moving forward to demolish most of the stadium and build high end condos. They are keeping the oldest parts of the stadium and the field though.
  17. Yeah E is kind of special. It's technically failing, but not in the ultra horrible way. I'll take that grade as E, for ENERGY EFFICIENT!
  18. I heard somewhere 40 feet to the top of the star. I look forward to skating in the rink after I get done with exams.
  19. ^ There's a big enough gap since the arm rest doesn't go all the way back. And the homeless have taken advantage of that, although I see a lot non-homeless people napping along the promenade during breaks in the summer. Okay! Believe it or not, the GM Plaza gets fairly heavy usage year round since so many events are held around there. I'm happy Detroit has scored two in a row with creating good public spaces recently..one of them being 4th best in the nation.

^ Yeah, after seeing that I thought. Damn, are we tacky Awesome photos Chris
  21. My housemates and I spent 2 minutes hanging low energy LED Christmas lights on our rental house. What do you think? We are awaiting our warning from the 4th ward historical society that our lighting scheme was not pre-approved by the neighborhood board.    Reflection across the street
  22. Oh... I forgot the alleged gang outside too.
  23. I think your yelling scared away whatever spirits were there.
  24. Currently Billionaire Matty Maroun owns the station. He has plans for it, but I haven't seen anything move forward recently. The building is still salvageable. In fact studies have shown that a renovation is more practical than the extreme high costs of demolishing this beast. Here's a few other facts: - Back in the 90's the station had some prep work done on it for renovations. This includes major asbestos abatements, which is why you see a lot of exposed pipes and ceilings - A couple years ago, the city proposed a plan to turn the station into the new police headquarters. Controversey arrose as to just how much it would cost to renovate the building. Studies showed varying ranges between 90 - 300 million. However, such a price tag is not inconsistent with projects such as the Book-Cadillac hotel which cost nearly $160 million. - The current owner proposes a convention center or possibly a casino - Other proposals include a trade processing center - The building was featured in scenes for the movies "The Island" and "Transformers" Another movie with a basketball theme was filmed there, but I haven't heard much about it. During times of the filming, the floors were cleaned and excess debris was removed revealing the floor patterns prior to decay
