God, the allnighters have taken their toll. http://www.umich.edu/~ifmuth/me109.jpg
  3. I worked in Evanston Inkaelin. Captions below my images my standard.
  4. It has buildings afterall.
  5. Since Chicago is only about 3 hours drive from Ann Arbor, I usually get out there about once a month. I spent a week there at the beginning of this month and figured I'd share some, as well as older images from last year. I'm going to back in Chicago this weekend, so stay tuned for more pics. I spraypainted a block of wood I found in the trash. That's how much Cobo means to me lol. Actually that turned out quite nice. I might do that again.

Say what? I hate architecture a bit less cause I just landed a job in Chicago (I'm out here right now). But I'm going into urban planning for grad school next year so hmmm.
  8. Great pics and story. The silence of the place really adds to the effect.
  9. I have a friend here in college who lives in Sandy Ground. Her house actually has that sunken garage deal as well. Great pics.

Or go down in flames. Or at the very least an eviction notice.

Yes. The logos are arranged to what you might think of as a number. Ohio State is 1 because the O is like "One" I'm away from my apartment right now, so I can't remember, but I think Michigan's block M is the eleven. It's a dumb clock really, it doesn't even work. The battery ran out 2 years ago and it's been stuck at 9:00 ever since. ColDayMan, what do you think of my Detroit river? It's architectural. I made the surrounding buildings out of medium density fiberboard. It makes them appear less flashly. That's a big thing in the design industry because architects don't want clients to care about surrounding buildings in fear it will take away from their own. So they gray them out in their proposals to make everyone think their building is the best and the rest sucks. This is just like my apartment. My walls are grayed out as well. Your focus is turned to everything else. To be honest, I don't give crap if people think it looks like concrete, or that my landlord is having a hard time finding a tenant for next year. It was the cheapest paint at home depot and covered up the fire damage from the previous tenant. This can be thought of as like when Detroit fixed up its fire damaged buildings for the Superbowl.

^ As in the apartment or my model of the city? ColDayMan, are you trying to set me up into saying something?

Yeah, the image is the first attempt at photo stitching the above image. For a second, i thought it would be one of those cool image within an image within an image kind of things. MytwoSense, I don't have any window treatments for the living room, so I just place boards over the window for privacy. I live on the second floor, so it's not like anyone can see in off the street. But my bedroom has blinds over the windows though. kingish, There's a bunch of empty 40's out on the fire escape, does that count? Here's the damn model: It's a massing model for a new Cobo Convention Center downtown.

Yes I saw that, but what I meant was beyond water and occasional trimming.

When it takes over my life and living space. I spent all night building a site model of Detroit. Now my apartment looks like Detroit. I guess that's why we have studio space. I know the stitching job is terrible. This was my second attempt.
  16. I was actually expecting a lot more towers, but this surprised me. Quite a few smaller homes and apartments in these photos. Nice!

I should find a better picture of me to post but there aren't a whole lot, you all will think I'm weird or something.

That shot of the skyline from the distance is amazing Chris. Really, all those photos are great. Thanks for ressurecting this thread, otherwise I wouldn't have seen it. Atlanta is alright. I've always appreciated it for it's culture, but the two times I've been there, the feeling of urbanity is pretty watered down.

^ They must be fertilizing that thing. There's no way a plant can grow to be that robust with just a few minerals in the brick and dust blowing in the wind.
  20. Great pictures, thank you for venturing out in the cold to take those....unless they were all taken from the car.

I was in Genesee Towers back in 1995 for a radio contest. The place was a dump then, so I'm sure its much worse now. It's called tower(s) because it is referring to the bottom portion (the parking structure) and the top portion (the offices) as seperate towers. I've always hated this building, and wouldn't mind seeing it go...although an empty lot would probably be a bigger eyesore IMO.
  22. Actually it looks like it's somewhere in Canada. Some place with the typical bland apartment highrise buildings that seem to proliferate the suburban Canadian landscapes outside their major cities.
  23. ^ I'm glad you like it. I've been revising it over and over, so I'm not sure what the final product will end up like Anyways, today was the test day for our towers. We held the weight limit + a bit more. We are graded on weight and height along with style points. Our tower scored perfect style points. We were about middle ground as far as height in comparison to other groups. While the minimum is just 3 feet, we had 6 feet, and another group had 8.5 feet! The towers could weigh no more than 4 oz. and laminating members to create thicker ones was not allowed. I have a video of our tower being broken, but I'll upload it later. Here's a few pics. Only one person is required to be present to show the tower, so half of our group decided to sleep in. Here's the 3 of us showing off our masterpiece before the carnage. Perfect score from the judges!

I can't get into my driveway because its too steep and icy. My landlord hasn't plowed it in days, and he has left us with no snow shovels. I've been parking in a ramp for two days now despite the $1/hour price. I'm waiting for Sunday to come so I can leave without paying. I hate this snow.

I understand what you mean. In comparison to the downtown, the apartment buildings would seem to belong in a city of over 500,000 people. Dearborn is part of the continuous corridor that runs a long Michigan Ave. In a sense, Detroit is spilling into Dearborn so the construction of these larger buildings was justified. But when you consider a city like Ann Arbor just down the road with a large downtown, and hardly any types of these older 4 story buildings, it seems very strange.
