  1. ^ That is the existing driveway that begins at W. 6th Street and hugs the north side of the Huntington Park Garage. You can see it in this view.
  2. ^danmc, those floorplans have not been updated to account for the "L" shaped exhibit space that extends below the MedMart building, and were created back when Public Auditorium was an option. They are a bit out of date, alas.
  3. There is actually quite a lot of work that will going on with putting in lights that are below the tree canopy, especially along the major commercial strips (Professor in particular). I think that folks are loath to cut down trees, and pruning would need to take place on such a frequent level that it would essentially cripple said trees. TWDC also recently completed its streetscape plan, which will be implemented over the next several years. But yes, the lighting concerns are quite valid and have been noticed.
  4. Although I am not a big fan of Renn's*, I agree with his conclusion: What is it that Columbus can be risky about? Is it the GLBT scene? Can it push itself as a place that supports entrepreneurism? What are the potentially big and distinct things that are in the nascent stages in C-bus? *I find that although he casts himself as a dispassionate observer and critic of urban life, his relentless advocacy for a city as bland (in my opinion) as Indianapolis puts me off.
  5. They don't "run" the grocery store, but rather, they operate the facility in which dozens of independent, privately owned businesses rent space. These businesses are free to operate wherever they like, but they choose this facility because it is the only thing like it. Private ownership means that the WSM would be operated strictly according to who could pay the most in rent, which would likely push out many of the unique and locally-owned vendors. Public ownership of the facility means that the landlord (the City) can use other factors in addition to rent (such as vendor mix, local ownership, quality of product) to determine who gets access to the WSM.
  6. ^ Huh! I know Michael (he's becoming more involved in the Cleveland sustainability community. Good fella.), but I had no idea that he was thinking about doing this. By "commercial storage cars", I wonder if this means "shipping containers". He'll need at least four 40' containers to make a decent (1280 s.f.) house. http://ask.metafilter.com/106853/Can-I-convert-a-boxcar-into-a-house EDIT: Duh, there are dimensions right there on the notice. 21'x109' footprint indicates (if these are indeed boxcars) using 15 7'x20' shipping containers per floor. That's a crapload of containers, provided that's his medium of choice.

8Titles, you just helped to get the Columbus perception threads erased; please don't start creating problems in Cincinnati threads as well.
  8. Aye, they just redid the park, but there is precious little shade offered by the saplings they planted. There is a small gazebo, but with all of the pavement, it's going to be awfully hot there as well.

It may be cheaper to just feed them calcium supplements and Beast; it will also make them more docile (or aggressive; it depends on what kinds of drunks they are).

^ Well, it's the difference between buying a six-pack of Great Lakes and a case of the Beast. Sure, the GL is much more expensive, but the taste is so much better. By extension, Hartzler's is AWESOME. You can tell that the cows were raised in a pasture instead of a feed lot, and you can actually notice a change in taste with the change in seasons. (It helps that I only drink a half-gallon a week.) EDIT: The US Bank Building is that ten-story black glass edifice that looks like it wants you to join the Dark Side.

I usually buy Hartzler's at Annemarie's, and it comes out to $3.99 per half-gallon after the bottle deposit; it's the same price as the organic milk you buy in the carton. Can you return the bottles to Heinen's as well?

Jesus, I'm listening to the WCPN program on the Innerbelt. What a waste this process has been, and how frustrating it is to listen to the ODOT spin. *sigh*

Actually, considering that this is the first of two bridges (assuming that the second bridge would require a new design process), I prefer Bridge B. - Out of all three designs, it is the only one that is architecturally honest. It doesn't have the fake arches of design A that sit awkwardly on the concrete pillars (the arches don't even line up with the tops of the pillars!) and it doesn't have the pasted-on arcs adjacent to the I-480 bridge of design C. - It has the fewest and smallest pillars on the landscape below. Design A has many thick pillars that lumber across the landscape - When the next bridge it built, it is the design that will best blend into the background. Honestly, at this point, I want the bridge to hide as well as it can. All three designs are homely girls; at least the homely girl of Design B has the sense to sit quietly in the corner and not wear stiletto heels or a bedazzled halter top.

Wow, when I thought that I couldn't be more disappointed in ODOT, I discover new and deeper wells of disgust from which to draw. How sad.

Nope, no can do. CSAs (and MSAs and µSAs) are county-based. The Akron MSA consists of Summit and Portage Counties, and you can't split off municipalities from counties to make them a part of a neighboring MSA.

  18. Regarding said tunnels: Pedestrian tunnels leading to Cleveland's Edgewater Park to close for repairs Published: Wednesday, August 04, 2010, 11:00 AM Cliff Pinckard CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The long-awaited project to improve pedestrian tunnels to Edgewater Park is scheduled to begin Friday, when the passageway under the West Shoreway at Lake Avenue is closed until the end of the year. The West 76th Street pedestrian tunnels under railroad tracks and the West Shoreway will close after Labor Day... For more: http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/08/pedestrian_tunnels_leading_to.html

I can vouch for the fact that MayDay is still up, about, and doing his damndest MayDay thing. Nice shots of Taste of Tremont! Now, if we could eventually do something about those overhead wires...
  20. No, Marietta is a City. Admittedly not as large as Cincinnati, but a city nonetheless.
  21. Dim and Den tend more towards the Chinese/Korean hot dog/burger fusion, but all of those foods already do really well here, though the Korean taco and Japadogs haven't really landed, yet. Caught the truck today over in the Warehouse District and had the PBLT (pulled pork and BLT) with some tots. They were originally over on the Mall, but apparently got moved by the police. So when an officer approached the truck (thankfully after I got my food), I was expecting them to be moved again. INSTEAD, the officer told them some good spots to stop and then offered the guys her card so that when they were in the area, she would make sure that another cop would set out some traffic cones for them and reserve a spot so that they wouldn't need to circle around. [should be in the "I Love Cleveland" thread]

My friends and I were wondering what that was about. We did notice that as the cops were leading this fella and his classy lady friend down the aisle that the lady was making some sort of hand gesture at the folks around them. Then, as they were nearly at the gate, she turned on her heel, ran down an aisle, and began throwing punches at some other fan before she was pulled off by the cops. Good times. Haven't seen a ballpark fight in a while.
  23. It was in the Warehouse District for lunch on Monday. I fetched myself a Jjang Dog, but wish I had taken a dozen.
  24. Cleveland Area History's Christopher Busta-Peck covered the Stanley Block building in pretty fair detail in June: http://www.clevelandareahistory.com/2010/06/condemned-stanley-block.html Honestly, though, it ain't looking good: http://www.clevelandareahistory.com/2010/06/stanley-block-condemnation-notice.html
  25. Good article in the NY Times about how botanical gardens are shifting their strategies for attracting visitors by emphasizing food. Cleveland Botanical Garden is leading the charge... Botanical Gardens Look for New Lures By JUDITH H. DOBRZYNSKI Published: July 26, 2010 For the last quarter century, the Cleveland Botanical Garden went all out for its biennial Flower Show, the largest outdoor garden show in North America... But in 2009, the Flower Show was postponed and then abandoned when the botanical garden could not find sponsors. This year, the garden has different plans. From Sept. 24 to 26, it is inaugurating the “RIPE! Food & Garden Festival,” which celebrates the trend of locally grown food... So it is across the country. Botanical gardens are experiencing an identity crisis, with chrysanthemum contests, horticultural lectures and garden-club ladies, once their main constituency, going the way of manual lawn mowers...
