Dayton: Historic Photos
Anyone have an old picture of the Sears building? The R and A from the old sign was salvaged by Real Art—who are currently moving from OD to Ballpark Village/Tech Town/Webster Station/First Street area.

New Bremen, Ohio
The city is pretty much owned by Crown. The keep it this clean. They are partially responsible for this preservation. A lot like Longaberger owns Newark or Smuckers owns Orville. But I couldn't tell you these cities are well kept as New Bremen. Thanks for the great photos.

In Search of the Dunbar House (Dayton)
Looking at some more recent Sanborn maps "Dayton, Ohio; 1918-1932 vol. 1, 1918" of the Haymarket area, 311/313 Howard was still a double, but it was now brick with expanded kitchens. It's quite possible PLD's first home did not survive the 1913 flood. I remember this from your blog. This was a great post, Jeff. :-D

2007: Four Ohio Cities in Top 20 Most Dangerous Cities
It also depends on what part of the city you live in, too. Patterson Park is safer than say Riverdale. I hate this statistic. New Orleans is not on that list because they don't disclose their stats, I think.

Porch Renovation
Thanks for your kind words, Boreal. MayDay, if you're ever in Dayton, I can tell you of places that serve draft Great Lakes (everyone here stocks their bottles). The local tavern in my neighborhood currently has Christmas Ale and Edmund Fitzgerald on tap. It's a beautiful thing.

Porch Renovation
Fortunately, that bed moulding was already white before the brackets went up. Plus, if you just get close with your painting, it looks fine from even 5 feet.

I think I screwed up not embedding this in the column. :[

Porch Renovation
Thanks for kind words everyone. I also like to mention that I estimate 80-90% of the porch had to be replicated. Facia, soffit boards, crown molding, a couple of the interior structure pieces and one bracket are original. Everything else was rebuilt. This will be the final color scheme. A quick story about the down spout inkaelin noticed. Fortunately before I had started all the finish work, my original design of having a buried downspout revealed a nasty flaw. The base of the 2005 column you see a piece of pvc tube hanging out. I had sealed 1.5" pvc running entirely from the original roof-drain location, that was against the house, back across the inside and drop down the main column. On one cold day, as I got home, I looked at the porch roof and noticed it had lifted off the main column, floating 6" above the capital. On closer inspection, the water in the vertical part of the 1.5" pvc that ran down the middle of the main column had frozen and acted like a push pop, breaking the pvc joint elbow at top of the column forcing the roof up. I had to redesign the downspout. Instead of it being sealed, I left a section of the pvc to dump into a regular piece of 3" downspoating that you see at the bottom of the current column. I hope this is the answer. I don't want to undo what I did.

A few old picts of the houses are posted here http://www.oregondistrict.org/archives/ before the urban renewal happened. It was bad. Jeff, I still reference what you post, wherever you have posted, no matter how long ago. It's great info.

The great Ohio railroad station thread
Dayton's First Railroad Station from the Lutzenberger Collection. Note:This building was Dayton’s first Railroad Station. It was built on the northeast corner of Sixth and Jefferson Streets in 1851, when the Springfield Branch of the Miami River and Lake Erie Railroad was completed. Another one from the Lutzenberger Collection: Note: Train station at the southwest corner of Sixth and Main Streets. The corner building was the Railroad Station. All the buildings shown in this block to Ludlow Street were torn down in 1900, preparatory to the building of the new Union Railway Station and the change of tracks.
