  1. ^Spicy Japanese Udon Noodles are the bomb. But I suggest you provide your own chicken, if you can. Around $8 a bowl with chicken. Ouch.
  2. I loved going to Woody's during the holidays as a kid to pick up shrimp. I used to see the water falls and the fruit cakes... even ate at the restaurant once. But it had its chance to be saved.
  3. Well, I enjoyed the threads while it lasted, Jeff. I waited for the full South Park thread, but alas, it wasn't to be. I don't blame your feelings. I get winded trying to research what I had for lunch yesterday. I doubt it. I think JeffreyT is of Cincinnati.
  4. I wonder what Jeff has to say about this.

Was the mayor's pitch discussed already? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rx6zsub-neU Watch Eric Davis's reaction.
  6. You're a riot, dfly. Okay, followup at DDN: http://www.daytondailynews.com/n/content/oh/story/news/local/2007/04/02/ddn040207breakfastclubweb.html Another side effect of low workforce: slim pickens. Appearantly their turnover rate is outrageous. The article also answers dfly's questions about lease/own. As for Tank's expansion, don't hold your breath. One of the new layouts have been planned since 2002 when he was working with Earl Reader Associates of Oregon District for the expansion site. Not sure if there's still a relationship there, but I saw a few of the proposed layouts then. The bus lot to the north of the building was to be the new kitchen. The bathrooms, I think, were going to the west of that. pretty much everything else was going to be the same, tweaks here and there for code adjustments (potential overloaded circuits). I have mixed feelings about Tank's expansion, though. First off, imagine you were in a wheelchair and wanted to use the bathroom there as a patron: Good luck without help. Speaking of the bathrooms, the men's bathroom must be outside. In the summer it's an oven, and a freezer in the winter. Second, I hear the kitchen is too small for their load, obviously. The flip side, as Lenny and Karl (a la Simpsons) said of Moe's Tavern: the dank, Moe, the dank! I hate to have the prices go up and the atmosphere change. But it did that anyways when the smoking ban came into effect, which he honors. And the food is a hit 95% of the time.
  7. I agree, dfly. We may never hear the full story. There's always Tank's (my fav). But you got to be there before 9:00 AM on the weekend or you'll be there until lunch. That place is insane for breakfast.
  8. The Breakfast Club Café closes Downtown Dayton. http://www.daytondailynews.com/n/content/oh/story/news/local/2007/04/02/ddn040207breakfastclubweb.html
  9. I use to work in the building third from the left, part of a company called DesignCrew. We moved to downtown Cincinnati, 4th and Elm, in early 2001. I miss O'Bryonville. There are/were great restaurants on the strip, especially a place called the Brickyard. Awesome pizza pie. Sigh.... thanks for the post!
  10. Across the street from Old Hickory. Good Tymes (I think it was spelled like that) novelty and costume store once occupied the land just north of Burger King. They razed the two buildings Good Tymes was in maybe a year ago and some other building at the end of January, abouts?
  11. Thanks, dfly! A one time potential tenant of IV was an iHOP. Needless to say, it fell through. :(
  12. Awesome, Jeffrey. One of Jeffrey's maps shows a line from Warren -> Burns -> Morton -> Johnson -> Clover (Twin Towers). If you ever go through South Park, swing through Morton Ave. It is the last brick paved street in the district, except for some alleys (I think). I understand it was once asphalted and uncovered, and rebricked removing the old rails. But at the Johnson-Morton T instersection, look for the road depressions of the old rail tie logs. They are in a turning pattern. They rotted under the pavers and sunk the road. Be warned, Morton is a bumpy road, thanks to all the ties rotting under this street, and you may lose a filling.

dfly is on the ball, here. From this thread, his post: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php?topic=3304.180 Noe if they can only figure out how to bury those overhead lines along Brown St.

I hoping to have my camera with me to take a shot of the new development just north of Burger King. Word is it will be a Moe's and Subway. Other than Arby's and UD Merchandise store, no one knows what else is going in the big building. inkaelin I'll try to shoot the two-story houses in South Park with the first floor bay window. I can think of one off hand, but I know there's more.

You should see Brown and Stewart. Great stuff, dfly!

Dayton currently enjoys NCAA basketball with two newsworthy teams: Raiders and the Flyers. We also currently enjoy the honor of kick starting the March Madness with the sellout play-in game and a first round bracket of the NCAA Championship Tournament: http://www.ncaasports.com/basketball/mens/schedules The Bombers garnered better attention when they played at Hara than Nutter, but I think if they found a downtown location close to the 5/3 Field to host the Bombers, I think they would do better in attendance and give the area restaurants and bars a winter crowd. As do a lot of baseball, the Dragons settled in to more of a social event than a sporting event (of course until a foul ball makes its way to a chatty attendee). Sports beyond the minor leagues, farm teams and college is a doubtful prospect here in Dayton. But we have is certainly not lacking.
  19. I have asked around about the tenants and heard along with Arby's there will be a couple of "outlet stores" and Kinkos will be returning to the hood. Kinkos once occupied the Starbucks there just north of the development. I'm not sure if that means a new Kinkos or the original one returning from downtown, if true.
  20. I just thought of something that was recently told to me, but not relating to this house (137 Morton) that gave me a second thought of what the tunnel was. Since Jeff said it was 1840s, it could have very well been underground (or indoor) access to a water well from the basement. It was ultimately sealed up when the city ran sewer lines. Just a guess.

If anyone is interested in starting to help out with Wikipedia historic work for our state, here are some links. I'm currently trying to get Montgomery County going, starting with Dayton. It's not an obligation, but any little bit can help. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:NRHP http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Registered_Historic_Places_in_Ohio It can be a lot of fun and don't be afraid of getting too detailed. You can also start uploading images you creat to the Wikipedia Commons and link from there if you'd like to contribute photography, or directly to Wikipedia itself. I can help get you directed in the right direction, too, if you have any questions.

  23. Wow! It took six years to travel from the Outer Banks of North Carolina to Dayton. I knew trains were slower back then, but sheesh! Their flight was delayed, and they missed their connection. Their luggage never did show up. :-D That reminds me of something I heard awhile back. When Dayton was throwing a parade in their honor, the Wright brothers—probably feeling it was a waste of time—left and headed back to their workshop. Whether that's true or not, I don't know. F*** this, Orville. Let's roll.
