Columbus: Scioto Peninsula Developments and News
Well you just know they would fight any tax increases to fund a move of anything to the Scioto Peninsula now too. smh. I loathe them. *probably not just tax increases, but the use of any state funds too.

Damn I must have missed that. Just what the heck was their problem? They need to keep out of this.

Columbus: Crime & Safety Discussion
I believe the city is now up to 122 homicides. Damn this is one hell of a bad year for them. I almost want to avoid any local news as it seems there is a new homicide nearly every day now-very depressing and disheartening to see this level of violence and killing in Cbus.

The only thing I don't like about that idea is I don't want a "satellite" of anything, I want the main thing there for maximum impact. I would rather the whole Historical Society move there, and have the satellite up where it is now. Although I would want them to sort of have a more updated and interactive/interesting place if they did relocate there. But of course with this we would be involving/surely fighting with/etc. the State of Ohio(and it's conservative leadership at the moment)so I don't know about this as it would involve many state $$$'s and all.

Columbus: Population Trends
I was looking at population estimates on that WorldPopulationreview site, and I saw that they had significant increases in the population of places like Lincoln Village and Blacklick Estates, like increases of around 10 or 15 percent from 2010 to 2020. These areas did not have any new housing built that I know of in that time period. So these estimates have to be based on vacant housing filling up, or family size increasing as different people moved into these areas. I don't know much about that site, but it is interesting to see that. They have Lincoln Village increasing from 9,032 to 10,549. Interesting. Also in Lincoln Village there are almost 4500 housing units(pretty much unchanged since 2010) and the 2010 census showed only 3723 households, which suggest a lot of vacant units, and I can attest to this-there were a significant number of vacant homes in 2010-it was very noticeable when driving thru the area-but not so at all now-hardly a vacant unit or for sale sign to be seen. I wonder how much of this would translate over to many Columbus neighborhoods that would be similar?

Columbus: Scioto Peninsula Developments and News
Whatever it is, it needs to be on a large scale. They cannot be too timid about this. As an institution or attraction or cultural whatever, it should be on a scale that is equal to COSI. This is another time when the city really needs to get it together, political and business leaders, etc. to bring something very significant to this location. And this is a time when we really do need the type of cheerleader and driving force that we had with Mayor Coleman. There needs to be a dynamic figure leading this, and we are lacking one right now, unfortunately. Ginther is just not. that. guy. I would rather they leave that area alone until the timing is right for something big instead of filling it in with something mediocre just to get it filled in. Concentrate instead on getting this middle part done and then focus on the Broad street area and the area north of Broad until they can get something together for the Town/Rich end of it. Make the Triangle a simple park for now, and the area to the west of it could remain parking(and a possible festival area, etc.)until they have something important to put there. JMHO.

Columbus: Scioto Peninsula Developments and News
This is exactly the kind of thing I want to see. But I want something more than a museum-I want an art-based version of something like COSI-something that would include art produced in Central Ohio and other places being displayed, something that would include the history of art in the area going back to the Adena/Hopewell cultures with recreations of some of that art, places for traveling displays from other cities/nations, a retail part for the selling of art, a production part for making art, a place for art classes, and a large area for interactive arts-something that visitors could get involved in-especially younger visitors. And all with a large outdoor area devoted to Public art and all. Call it COCOA (Central Ohio Center Of Arts)?? or something to go along in a way with COSI and locate it on the area west of the park triangle that the zoo thing was going to go on(locate the facility between Belle, Town, Rich, and the RR tracks). Make that triangle the open art/park area, and make that stretch of Washington Blvd a pedestrian walk with areas for public art and food vendors/seasonal stuff along it. Make sure to have a restaurant in the park area too-sort of like they have across the river. The space could also be used in conjunction with the Dorrian Commons space for festivals, etc. make sure there is a significant water feature that is interactive but not in the way of people actually being in the water-again we already have that across the river. Basically make it a counterpart to Bicentennial Park across the river which would encourage crossing between the two. Multiple uses all based around art would make it more of an attraction and more likely to be successful as the uses could be tweaked toward what works more/better vs what does not work so well. A not having all of your eggs in one basket thing. Make sure there is a strong connection from this to the burgeoning new arts district(East Franklinton)and maybe even have nearby designated affordable housing for artists/aspiring artists. Also make sure there are strong connections with the other area art museums, The Ohio Historical Society, OSU, and CCAD. Get local institutions involved in funding/sponsorship. This is just the dream I have for that area anyway. Who knows what will happen at this point. *We can have the park be called the Wexner Memorial Arts Park with a damn 50 foot statue of him with a laser light show shooting out of the statue's eyes and a hologram halo levitating above the head-if he donates some tens of millions towards the cost of it all that is...Hey if it would work! lol.

Smells of the City
Yes it was the rendering plant. And it was much closer in so it could be really bad. The paper mill was worse though when it was bad-it was like the stench just floated up the Scioto River valley and then just spread out. Inland Products was not as widespread but could be particularly nasty smelling. God only knows what they had in the rendering vats-this was back in the early/mid 70's when nobody seemed to give a sh*t about any of this stuff-it was just accepted and sometimes bitched about, but not much more. Back when kids would ride their bikes right in the chemical fog behind the trucks spraying for mosquitos-and parents just watched and did not seem to care lol. I remember that smell also-yeah I was one of those kids(probably part of why I am so demented today.) Why did we think that was fun and ok? smh.

Columbus: Scioto Peninsula Developments and News
When this 6 block section of the Scioto Peninsula is done along with Gravity 2, I will literally pee myself when I see this view posted! It has taken sooooo long to start filling in the dead area west of COSI! More than my entire life!!!!! and it is finally happening! Good times in Cbus.

Smells of the City
As I was getting my colonoscopy yesterday(and wide awake because the meds did not sedate me as I told them they would not)the old smells of the Wonder Bread factory was one of the things I discussed with one of the nurses lol. Such a strong and "wonder'ful smell! Hell yes you could smell that nasty stuff! Especially on winter mornings in the 70's going out to wait for the school bus on the far west side that stench would be horrendous. Also does nobody remember Inland Products and the awful smells from that hellish place? And the smells that would emanate from the sewage sedimentation pond called the Scioto River downtown when it was sluggish, filled with sludge and baking under a hot summer sun? I recall one Red White and Boom that was very unpleasant being too close to the river/sewage pit. What could be seen in the river only enhanced the sense of smell as well.

I would rather the connection be from what will apparently be the eastern end of Nordecke drive(what on Google Earth is the name for the road north of the stadium) east/northeast across and into "The Triangle" and then north into the "The Quadrilateral" that is south of Vine. White Castle can then be connected to this all by extending a road into the existing access point under the freeway east into "The Quadrilateral". Instead of connecting two semi-isolated areas, you would be connecting four. Connecting the extra two areas would improve access and might make them more developable, and make the cost of the connection more 'worth it". If you are going to have at grade rail crossings I would rather they connect everything together and everything would have two entrance/exit points. The alternative would be either a large overpass or a large underpass-requiring much $$$$ to build. I really don't have the knowledge of whether or not these at grade crossings are something that is feasible or not(also not sure given the different locations of them). What happened with Schottenstein and the Grand Central plan does not bode well-it seems they ran into problems with the at grade crossings-I am not sure if the problems were technical in nature/not feasible for safety reasons/regulations, or just really expensive? It might be a good time for "the powers that be" to think about these things/come up with a solution while there is momentum in this area with what is currently being built and planned. Build things now that will at least allow future extensions to be built or feasible, instead of locking off access to some of these isolated areas by making future road extensions unworkable.

Columbus: Victorian Village Developments and News
Toddguy replied to Summit Street's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionGlad to see this. I think just about every good looking church needs to be preserved in some way serving some kind of function, especially since so many have so much historical value. It is just hurtful to me to see good looking church buildings torn down for no good reason at all or because they can't be maintained and have no current use. This is a time when if nothing else the city should step in-this is an investment in each community in which these churches are located and that is part of what "the city" should be about IMO. This is something worthy of tax $$$'s.

Columbus: Population Trends
Did you vote? And yes I should consider that. Ten years ago there were so many vacant properties. Not so now. There were tons of vacant places in the neighborhood where I grew up. Now you can drive around and not see a single vacant property or for sale sign.

Columbus: Population Trends
So with the info coming soon, what do you think? Just bored and curious as to what others think. I chose 910,000-917,500. I just do not see where any more people could have been crammed into the city given the relative lack of housing construction-JMHO. Also I wonder about how the pandemic may have changed the counting of OSU students as well.

So even though the data will appear on the old ACS portal by 9/30 it will be able to be accessed when released on 8/16, right?

Columbus: German Village / Schumacher Place Developments and News
Toddguy replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionIs there a name for this place yet? If not, I suggest "The Nantucket". With a nautical-themed seafood restaurant called...you know what! lol. The "Blue Whale" as a tribute to "The Blue Danube"? lol. Graywhale? Narwahl? Orcas Place?

Columbus: Downtown: Lower.com Field / Astor Park
It definitely seems like there should be a road or something along that line. Whether or not they add lights elsewhere to help with traffic, there should be either an actual road or a pedestrian thoroughfare along that line. Even if it allows traffic that is right turn only into/out of Spring. That block of land needs to be broken up IMO.

Columbus: Fifth by Northwest (5xNW) Development and News
Toddguy replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionThis is ridiculous they need to disregard the recommendation of the 5xNW commission. They have all of that other crap listed but right off the real reason is given-too high and too many units. Even if the rest of it-the other problems specifically listed-are adjusted, they still do not want that many units at that height. They do not want density and they state if right out immediately. That is not what the city needs to keep in mind with a growing population and a housing shortage. It is not about what certain residents want, it is about what the city overall needs at this point. Especially if developers do not need to be coddled, begged and bargained with, but are more than willing to build and densify in an area, they should be accommodated within reason. Let's see them address the little issues mentioned about access, visitor parking, etc. and then see it resubmitted and see what the result is. That will show the true intentions-they don't want the density period. *50 residents in the area attended...no...50 NIMBYS attended. Too much light and traffic? Awww...you live in a city of 900,000 you fools. Move!

Columbus: Downtown Developments and News
I did not know the cirulator was canned. Why? Covid? They really need something like that running along the "High Five" and eventually they should have one connecting OTE with East Franklinton. Why would they not want these when wanting to densify the existing corridors without making massive investments in structured parking in the corridors that these circulator would would serve? I hope this is not a permanent thing. smh.

Columbus: Crime & Safety Discussion
True. And yes it is easy to forget that you have to factor in not only the number of homicides but the number per capita-as Columbus as added a quarter or a million people since the early 90's(damn a whole quarter of a million...hard to digest really since it seems like it was only yesterday(the early 90s') to us older folks on here.)

Columbus: German Village / Schumacher Place Developments and News
Toddguy replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionSo the Whalers are going to waste their money on a frivolous lawsuit? LOL. I wonder if any of them will intentionally beach themselves in despair over the totally appropriate luxury apartment building being built outside their own district? Too bad that after construction it cannot be made a section 8 building just to get back at the Whalers.

Columbus: Brewery District Developments and News
The Blenkner Beast? I also think I heard a rumor that many of these apartments will be subsidized for recovering addicts and for people recently released from prison-to help them get back on their feet? Maybe the city can get involved and get some of the homeless off the streets and into some of these apartments as well.

Columbus: German Village / Schumacher Place Developments and News
Toddguy replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionThis had BETTER PASS! What the hell is wrong with those whacked out whalers? I swear I want a 40 story tower on South High that will cast long deep shadows over ever damn part of German Village at some point of the year. I mean this is ridiculous, I am done with these aggrieved moronic self-centered asses. This sh*t is not even in German Village for Chrissakes it is in Shumacher Place! Were is Ahab when we need him...anyone got a spear gun or a harpoon for these German Villain Idiots? SMDH. And the city can be just like a spineless animal when dealing with these groups, just folding like origami when faced with the bitching and complaining from the "entitled ones". We need housing and this is a damn good project in a damn good location for some damn good apartments. Get over yourselves German Villains! /rant
