Columbus: Downtown: The Assembly (Former Kroger Bakery)
Well I think we know the answer as to why the northern end(adjoining Abbott)is where the strip of surface parking lot is. They might have anticipated this, I mean there will be a parking buffer and then landscaping as well separating Abbot from the apartments. Building B is really the only problem-the area by building A is not a loading or manufacturing area but a large parking lot. I think they could tweak Building B a bit and be fine here. JMHO. And yeah, it would be different if these were condos. And I think they will know about noise...the other two sides of this triangle are an elevated freeway and Cleveland Avenue, a major artery. I think traffic noise will be a consideration of possible residents.

Exactly. I was not able to read the article but the snippet made it seem like this Tom Evers was a government official and not an employee of Abbot for the last 17 years. This sounds like some Abbot bullsh*t for some reason. This is really not their issue anyway-they need to butt out. They are basically NIMBYS with this..."incompatible"..."change the historic nature of the neighborhood"...etc.

^^ That waterfall pic is stunning for the Cbus area.

Columbus: Downtown: The Assembly (Former Kroger Bakery)
I agree, I hope they can make this happen. I think anyone moving there would be aware of noise concerns as the elevated freeway is right there beside it. So what is this "if an area is historically manufacturing...incompatible with Abbot...stuff"? They know there will be lights and traffic noise...again the freeway. This proposal seems very 'inward focused' anyway except for the side facing Cleveland avenue. I hope they don't get it cancelled. So is this Tom Evers a specialist on urban developments near light manufacturing plants so that he can say "residential use is incompatible with the work Abbott has been doing there for decades" What work is Abbot doing that would cause this? All I read was lighting and some vehicle noise?

I want to know if the last one was one of the ones who pepper sprayed Shannon Hardin and company?

They are out again in force. Driving west down 40 toward Darby Creek there seemed to be a haze over the road. It was THEM! They were swarming so much they created a haze. It died down a bit but again before crossing Little Darby Creek into West Jeff...another haze. They were hitting the car lol. These thing cannot fly worth sh*t. I live very close to the creek and there are big old trees around here-probably why they are so numerous. This morning I went out on the porch and they were just scattered on top of the shrubbery so I could just pick them off If I wanted to-they do not move away. I accidentally stepped on a couple walking from my car. My dad wanted me to catch some so he could see them since there are none in his Cbus neighborhood. In the very short time it took to grab three of them off some shrubs and put them in a container*, two airborne Cicadas hit me in the head. They don't seem too bright, they don't move away from capture, they can't fly worth sh*t, and they apparently do not like captivity as they have been quite noisy in the container at times They are loud enough that if they were more numerous and were a bit louder, this would be some Alfred Hitchcockish stuff ala The Birds. I am tired of them and now they are annoying, and I read that they actually can cause some significant plant damage. *I will free them tomorrow after they have been inspected.

^^^ It would be nice if they could find some space for a little bar or restaurant in that Light Plant complex.

I do not remember them back in 1987 or 2004 in Columbus either where I lived-nothing like yesterday. I have never experienced them like this before. They quieted down last night. Not a peep yet today-maybe they don't like rainy weather? They sound just like they do on the videos I had watched of them on Youtube-except they are even louder.

These Cicadas are going nuts today. They have been roaring most of the day. I have only heard them in the distance before and saw some on the trees and plants but they were out in force today. They were flying all around, had two almost hit me as I worked in the yard. I could look in the trees and see them scattered all about. The birds were also quite active today-must be a feast for them. I hope these things quiet down later. I can hear them with the air conditioning on and blasting right near me and headphones on inside the house(music stopped playing...they can be heard-even with headphones on.) They were all over my pear tree...I wonder if they will slide down and eat the roots and kill it?-it was not there 17 years ago-I planted it 14 years ago. I even tried to pick a dead leaf off a bush and I ended up with a live Cicada in my hand. They are very interesting looking alive, but those husks they leave are creepy to me.

Cleveland: Downtown: Sherwin-Williams Headquarters
WOW! That slope at the top really makes the renderings look good. If it comes out like that it will really look way more appropriate than I would have thought a box could. It sort of respects and draws attention to the centerpiece of the skyline, the Key Tower.

Newark: Developments and News
Toddguy replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionI think what they are doing with this site is by far the best option. You are getting housing, retail, employment(the office space component), entertainment, and recreation space(possibly including the park along the creek). This will offer so much more than just industrial jobs. Also the office space will hopefully be designed to be flexible to change according to changing needs. JMHO

Columbus: Historic Photos
The only reason I specifically said no to the Peninsula is because I want something even better in that little triangle by the river. But if nothing else, then I agree that would be a good place. I want something a bit more "arty" to go with the nearby East Franklinton district-but it probably won't happen. I would want something big for riverside triangle site too-at least 250,000 square feet. A hybrid type thing with several uses might work there. And they need to have a damn bar/ restaurant with outdoor seating-preferably rooftop for the views.

Columbus: Crime & Safety Discussion
Well I don't know whether or not there is a crime thread for the Greater Columbus area or other specific parts of the area so I will comment here(given that West Jeff is rightly so considered a commuter suburb now of Cbus). I was shocked at the quadruple homicide in West Jefferson. Four people, three men and 1 woman, slaughtered at the end of a one way street in a very isolated part of West Jeff. Only one was from West Jeff(and lived at the address of the killings), one other was from Springfield and the other two from London. I don't even know if there has ever been a mass killing like this is Madison County ever. The last murder here was in 2009 or 2012 or something and was a(almost predictable unfortunately)domestic affair where a guy killed his girl-way too common everywhere. But this is especially appalling-no crime of passion here-deliberate premeditated quadruple murder. It makes me shudder to think some monster could be here still after having done that. I highly suspect, after being able to look into the past of three of the victims by doing a little searching, that this was drug related. It just shows how the crime and drug problem plaguing Ohio cities is spilling out into areas previously spared of the worst of the violence. This crime and drug epidemic is going to ruin this state if it is not brought under control. Both of these issues-drugs and crime-are major public health emergencies and need the resources brought forth to deal with such things. Just shameful that this made the headlines in England, India, etc. What an awful thing for a town to make international headlines when the town and township combined have less than 7,000 people

Columbus: Historic Photos
I have to admit I dislike the building. I wish it would have another function and the Historical Society main building function could be relocated close to or within downtown Cbus- But not necessarily to the Scioto Peninsula. Maybe closer to the Art Museum and CCAD or something-not like they don't have a ton of huge lots around the city college there. That said, it is a perfectly decent functional building so I don't want it demolished or anything. And I will admit while I don't like it, it is iconic whether I like it or not. The degree of openness around it also does enhance the stature of the building. I guess I just dislike it as the main center of the Historical Society-otherwise it would be ok and alright even a bit cool.

Columbus: Downtown: Arena District Developments and News
Toddguy replied to CMH_Downtown's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionIt will cause a vast connected area to be between German Village and the horrors of Downtown Cbus allowing huge numbers of "transients" to "invade" the area! *clutches non-existent pearls*

Columbus: Short North Developments and News
Toddguy replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionAt least they appear to be utilizing part of the roof as outdoor space. I nearly always approve of doing that-we need much more of it IMO. It does not look bad to me really.

Columbus: Downtown: Arena District Developments and News
Toddguy replied to CMH_Downtown's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionI also wish we still had Coleman or a "Coleman type" mayor. He was a great advocate for the city. I also would not mind a reworking of the old "blue serpent" design for the Broad Street Bridge into a pedestrian type bridge connecting the Arena District with East Franklinton/the Scioto Peninsula. There needs to be a pedestrian connection, at the very least an inexpensive value engineered one.

Columbus: Downtown: RiverSouth Developments and News
Toddguy replied to CMH_Downtown's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionAll of this almost seems personal to me. I know that Schiff and the owner were going at it over price for some time and there appeared to be some bad blood there and some legal proceedings if I remember correctly. It almost seems like now that he finally has the property he cannot possibly raze it soon enough. And I will be right there to swing the first sledgehammer for him, as long as he has a nice tall building lined up with financing and ready to break ground that is.

Columbus: Downtown: AC Hotel - Park & Spruce
It really does look so much better with the 30 foot setback. It helps the street presence and also makes the building less bulky and foreboding looking than it might have been. And it also makes the building unique. What would be really cool is if the office component took a page from this building and they incorporated some brick and stone at the base to match this one, along with a big more glass as you mentioned. Also any similar treatment with a parking garage-brick it up! They could almost make small this area look like a mini-district of it's own. And who knows?-they could always add residential to the office part and expand it(upwards!)and go after those credits available for 15 plus floors...just saying and all... the views would be great and so close to so much! :) Mixed use would be a much better bet than just office-don't want those eggs all in one basket. And make the office floors so some of them can be converted to other uses if needed. It would be wise to make this combined project as diverse and mixed use as possible IMO. Take a page from Gravity. Also this makes it much easier to describe. "what hotel was that?" "It was the gray one with the old brick buildings built into the base" instantly distinguished as opposed to "the gray box one." ?????

Columbus Crew Discussion
Thank God they came to their senses and reversed this fairly quickly. Everybody can be friends again and we can quickly move on from this little pothole in the road and enjoy the continued success of The Crew and the opening of the new stadium. Kudos to the leadership for reversing this fairly quickly instead of dragging it out and kudos to the fans who helped to bring that about. *The leadership may actually come out better for this as it can be said that they are responsive to their fanbase. They made a mistake, they listened to the fanbase, and then they corrected the mistake. They would be wise to continue to play it that way.

Columbus: Italian Village Developments and News
Toddguy replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionI like it, but does everything have to be some shade of brown now? This is making me long for Arena District brick. This building has no real color whatsoever-like the Arizona desert mountains-just different brown turd colors. I hate to complain but damn between this and the Scioto Peninsula renderings...

Columbus: Westland Developments and News
Toddguy replied to CMH_Downtown's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionThese apartments are really not going to be that close to Westland itself-they will be closer I believe to Sullivant Avenue. The part of what was once Lincoln Park West that is in Prairie Township is the southern part closer to Sullivant. This was the large area that was demolished and also where the deadly fire occurred. The smaller northern section that was demolished closer to the dead mall is in Franklin Township right along Georgesville road. The remainder became Havenwood. Any housing especially affordable is good for the area.

Columbus Crew Discussion
Why couldn't they leave well enough alone? Who came up with this moronic change? They need to quickly drop this and move on. The sooner the better. What a way to ruin the new stadium opening and all. And after the Crew won the whole thing last year. Smh.

356 feet is much higher than I expected. This along with the Hilton expansion will really stand out and make the biggest impact in the skyline in 30 years.
