  1. Well there is always room for different opinions. And yes I agree the giant sterile brick plaza makes BCH much worse. The Newark building, while I don't like it, is not nearly as problematic to me as it is smaller and on what appears to be just a quarter block and does not appear to be as much of a dominant force in the downtown(it would be much worse if it were located on the square itself, as an example.)

So what is this? https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/03/sport/nba-plan-22-teams-come-back-trnd/index.html So Cleveland is out? If this is true, it sucks. It is one thing if they all don't play, but for certain teams to bet cut off like this? This is messed up IMO.
  3. But social distancing! ? *otherwise all of the pics look great though. I hope you get that new city building and garage. That current thing does look like a mini-Boston City Hall and like that building is looks awful and out of place! I am also glad that the 161 extension seems to have really given a boost to the Newark area.
  4. Sorry I disagree. Both this building and the Boston City Hall should have been destroyed yesterday as both appear to be monstrosities.
  5. LOL pruning was done. I went to respond to a notification on a post and the post was not there.
  6. They have to have insurance for this damage, right? I don't see why they would not move ahead otherwise given the prime location and the acquisition of the property and having all of the infrastructure in place. They just may need to demo and then restart the building of it. It looks like the foundation work and everything would still be intact as most of the damage appears to be to the upper levels of the building. And it was coming along so nicely. *sigh*. I am just going to hope for the best here. *Plus isn't this just part of a master plan for the area by Motorists?(er...Encova-It will always be the Motorist's building just like it will always be the Sears Tower!). They already have a stake in owning all of those surface lots.
  7. A compromise might be a targeted consolidation rather than a county/city merger. But I am not familiar with anything like that happening before. I have read and heard numerous times that Jacksonville consolidated with Duval County for the specific reason of keeping Jacksonville from becoming a majority black city. Unfortunately this has to be considered when talking about consolidation of municipalities, especially county/city mergers. *At the same time, Cuyahoga County is about 30% black, And Columbus City is about 30% black as well, And we just had a two time black mayor(Coleman), currently have a black(and gay)city council president(who just got sprayed in the face with mace the other day), so it does not necessarily mean the end of the world to have a 30% black population...it just depends on each circumstance and how you view Cbus as a functioning government when it comes to black political power-I admit I am not up to par on this part of it-particularly how might be between Cleveland and the rest of Cuyahoga County-I am just not informed enough on that to give a good opinion. *and I agree with KJP-this is all long term and currently premature.
  8. There are all kinds of other implications regarding consolidation. If Cleveland merged with Cuyahoga County, then the black percentage of the population would drop from a near majority at right around 50%, to only 30% of the population. Will blacks or other minorities be willing to give up that much political clout?-especially given what is happening in the nation right now? Consolidation has been used to "water down" black political power(Jacksonville comes to mind)before. This might be a hard sell on both sides.
  9. I don't know if NYC is the best example to use considering it has by far the highest density and has been hit the hardest by the virus. Compared to NYC, most US cities have density that is comparable to NYC suburbs rather than the city itself. Even Staten Island has 8,000 persons per square mile-much denser than most US cities. Are people trying to flee Denver city, Atlanta city, or other central cities? Will people move out of Lakewood and into Cleveland or some other city since Lakewood is the densest city in Ohio? And thanks for the other info.
  10. If a company is located in the city, but a worker is working from home 3 days a week(in the suburb they are living in) and going into the office(in the city)for 2 days a week, Then who gets the income tax? Is it split? How does that work? *I think some form of some days in the workplace, some days working from home may be more likely than just all working at home. Columbus is in the same boat as Cleveland here regarding tax revenues.
  11. I understand your concerns, and I was not responding or commenting on a post you made. Especially combined with what has been happening with small business regarding the pandemic and the economy, I can understand the concern. But I still think it is premature for comments like "the revitalization of downtown may be over" and all-especially since events are ongoing, and these events are happening nationwide. I am sure your contribution to helping clean up the mess is appreciated as well.
  12. This is pathetic!
  13. It is like they don't realize that this is not a Cleveland specific event, and that if this is the end of downtown Cleveland, then it will be the same for dozens of cities across the country-and I don't see that as likely. This is more likely a temporary setback. Even if some businesses are lost(and may have already been on the way out thanks to COVID-19), I think the "The renaissance of downtown Cleveland is over" stuff is very very premature.
  14. I agree they will likely rebuild for the reasons you mentioned-it is important to keep the bigger picture in mind and see this as just a temporary setback.
  15. Damn, already? At least they wisely shut off access to downtown Cleveland. *Goes off to monitor if anything similar is happening around here*
  16. The fact that they were under construction and unoccupied is likely why they were targeted. The(likely white just out to destroy)people who did this knew that the building would have no working fire detection/suppression systems while under construction. This is why the 5 story 190 unit apartment building in Minneapolis that was under construction burned to the ground and was a huge inferno, while the Target nearby was looted and also set on fire, but the fire was put out by the sprinkler system so while the building was looted and had some smoke and water damage, it did not turn into an inferno. Whomever did this knew what they were doing and targeted this building because it was under construction. And I doubt it was was of the many people who were out reasonably protesting police violence and brutality towards POC and other racial societal inequities.
  17. Watching this fire live(WCMH) as it heavily damages this development is just sickening. It looks like most of the top of the building is burning. I would not be surprised if they did not target this, as these under construction developments are so prone to burn given they are stick built and have no working fire protection/suppression systems-just like the 5 floor building near the 13th precinct in Minneapolis was targeted and burnt completely to the ground.
  18. These are currently on fire, have been burning for some time, and have been heavily damaged. Seen at WCMH website. Probably related to the riots and all. SMH.

    Thor H. was right?
  20. It seems like there has been very little building in the uncool crescent except for the fringe suburban areas in Grove City, Pickerington, etc. The far west side has been dead except for a few infill apartment projects. Everything is a bit north in Hilliard Schools or way down in Grove City(avoiding the worst of the SWCSD schools). The Hilltop has really gone downhill and it is sad. I went by my old street in Wilshire Heights and it was really depressing.
  21. Welcome to the board! Unfortunately I do not have an answer for you-I have no idea of what is going on there. Hopefully someone with the knowledge will chime in and post.
  22. Gravity looks good, but are they going to ever have any real trees at all on that side of Broad? Also too bad they could not stick a few container trees on the rooftop spaces.
  23. It looks like a good plan given it would be too expensive to keep the third floor(regarding the two Franklinton buildings.)
  24. Well only one other American city besides NYC has been able to pass it. You never know though. Who in 1950 would have thought that Columbus would have more than 200,000 people than Detroit? Or that Cleveland and Columbus would basically be trading places regarding 1950 populations by 2020? Who knows, with the way Columbus annexes(per other residents of certain cities and certain editors of certain .com local news websites that got rid of their comment section not too long ago)in 30 years Columbus might extend all the way from the Ohio River to Lake Erie, cover 10,000 square miles, and have more than 3 million people! ?
