  1. I can't imagine it would be anything else. Is there any other reason to move there?-isn't it just an oil town and nothing else? I have never heard of it mentioned for anything but the oil business and it's tallish downtown(for a smaller city)-surrounded by blocks of parking lots of course-it is in Texas! lol. Strange looking list. Colorado has one, Texas has one, Boston is in. The rest are in areas of California. Not really surprising. But then us????
  2. I don't think the city should do anything remotely "draconian" in nature. Draconian flies in the face of sensible, IMO. I can see having a good oversight over what is happening, but severe limitations will not just cause growth to go where it does not want to go-there will be loss. Those other areas will start to boom when people decide to discover them and want to be there. You just can't force growth like that, and you can't predict where people will go if you severely limit growth in one area. it may go right outside the city...people are fickle and unpredictable. JMHO.
  3. Also there are little things like zoning laws, popular opinion, elections, etc. that also come into play. People will have to want to make it happen, or have it forced upon them if they don't. Very difficult to do, as we can see with Clintonville as an example. ^True, but so does Private investment and plans and risk. Only within the rules that they can play by.
  4. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Can we PLEASE not mention other cities, especially in a negative light? This is exactly how the thread got derailed this last time. There is no reason to mention any other cities by name, especially when the comment is not a positive one. Thanks. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anyway, I think a light rail line might work (if the railroads would permit it) from downtown to the airport and then up to Easton. You already have three important nodes with room for development-downtown, the airport and Easton- and there are underdeveloped areas and brownfields that would be perfect for dense TOD developments in between them. It would also help benefit nearby communities that are somewhat distressed. You can see with the Rogue facility and the recent apartment announcement for the south part of Milo Grogan that gentrification is moving a bit east. One big problem is that much of this area along this route is not considered 'desirable' and that might be a problem. If that could be overcome and you could get areas adjacent to the line with TOD, it would also benefit these communities by providing jobs and income, hopefully without widespread gentrification throughout those same neighborhoods. Maybe a win/win situation? I don't know. But it just makes sense that these are three large nodes that could use a connection like a light rail system. JMHO.
  5. Ummm the Scioto Peninsula says hello... They stated they need the 600,000 square feet almost immediately, not after two or three years of construction. So there is 600,000 square feet of office space just sitting there on the Scioto Peninsula? Well Peter Piper Picked a Peck of Peppers! I had no idea!!! lol ;) *the Scioto Peninsula (and parts of East Franklinton) would be great...for new buildings. Where is that office space they will need right away? Won't matter really since we won't get it ...just sayin'. Last I checked they weren't opening tomorrow... just sayin' This is what the RFD stated: "Initial Square Foot Requirement 500,000+ Sq. Ft. Phase I (2019)" So we are going to have half a million square feet available on the Scioto Peninsula in 2019? Really? Unless of course they can work around this...along with our transit issues and all of the other things they are asking for that we lack. I am rooting for (surprisingly enough) Atlanta. After that Chicago or one of the sites in the BosWash corridor. I would love it here but at the same time I'm nervous. If it happens by 2019 I would be surprised, I'd imagine that they would do it in phases regardless of where they're at. They could put some in the vacant buildings in Dublin and some of the open space in downtown until Scioto Peninsula came online. I am just waiting on my $100.00 payoff!!! lol ') I am NOT going to be eating a Kroger Bag. *I suppose they could also cobble together some downtown properties to get the half a million square feet sometime before the end of 2019 to be honest. I really am just sick of the whole thing and want one of the other cities to just get it and have it over with. Then we can learn from the experience and focus on getting other companies in (Amazon is not the only company in the World now is it?).
  6. ^^ "Columbus had large swaths of land and farms until very recently within actual city limits." Key word is "had". Without some major changes in city policy I am afraid most of the new growth will be in the suburbs-the city cannot absorb even one third of the 750,000 expected regionally within the next thirty years otherwise. Ideally we could develop some mass transit and have dense TOD along these lines. But where can you run them where the existing zoning(and nearby residents) would allow dense TOD development? Where along a line from downtown to Dublin are you going too fill in along a line to get those dense nodes to make mass transit like light rail really work? Connecting a few thousand well heeled Dublin residents to Downtown is not worth the hundreds of millions of dollars needed to make it even remotely work financially, and nobody should be subsidizing a "boutique" light rail or streetcar line in a city with a poverty rate of around 30%. JMHO.

  8. Is this in the right thread lol? Yeah Clintonville is bad, but look at German Village, or most areas...even the University district is concerned about maintaining the "feel" of areas like Lane Avenue. Too dense or tall for Lane Avenue? And what is the "feel" of that stretch that they are trying to protect. This is all too common. There are way too many areas in the city that are single family detached residence only. We need to have zoning that allows apartment conversions, apartments over garages, etc. and in more areas of the city. What areas of the city are going to welcome something like what is going on along High street?(besides many of the areas in the "uncool crescent"...didn't you coin that term?) If we don't allow more density and in more areas just where are we going to put the 750,000+ people we are supposed to add in 30 years? In mile after mile of extended sprawl? With all of the additional roads, sewers, water lines and additional infrastructure along with what we already have? Also Columbus is more than two thirds the size of NYC proper. Just sayin' and all. I wish we could get some of their type of developments(just not at the cost they have to pay). We are going to add by 2050 basically 80% or more of the existing population of Columbus as it is now to the region. Where are we going to put these people? I would rather add as many as possible within the existing urban/suburban footprint, and that is going to be difficult given how things are moving now. We are behind in new housing as it is.
  9. What are the chances of a Franklin County/Columbus merger like Indy or Nashville? 1% or even less than that? Would the fact that there are so many incorporated suburbs already in Franklin County be a stumbling block to that? Also what about certain townships getting annexed(like Franklin township, for instance)? I know that I read recently(can't remember where)that Cbus city schools are no longer requiring newly annexed land to be a part of Cbus city schools. Would that encourage more areas to be receptive to annexation or is there just no desire whatsoever for already developed neighborhoods to be a part of Cbus itself? Did anyone else read this? Also given that newly annexed areas could remain in suburban school districts, will Columbus start any more annexations? I kind of hate to see that the city seems(at least to me)to be almost completely surrounded by incorporated suburbs with the only areas really open are to the south and west where development potential is limited? I wish the city would annex more land strategically and build dense developments like in that corridor between Hilliard and Dublin. If the area is going to be developed in a suburban way anyway, I would rather Cbus do it like that, then have the sprawling large lot only stuff that is rampant in many suburbs(although some have also adopted a more varied approach with denser developments I will admit). I just think of cities like Dallas that annexed huge areas and still ended up being almost completely surrounded by suburbs with huge developments going into areas like Plano-areas which could have been in Dallas itself. (not attacking Dallas or being city vs city here, just using an example). With the city growing so fast and the suburbs too I would hate for Cbus to get limitied to infill only(although that is great in and of itself). I just don't see how the city can keep adding 15,000 people a year with infill only-especially with Nimbyism and so much single family residential zoning.
  10. I think peoples' issues aren't with the height itself, it's that this height is not on High St and is set back. Now you can argue the Park St. development(which I hated initially and now love) is showing us this can be done properly. However it's nearly half it's height. If this building was going on the plot of land where the Wood Cos plaza sits then I would have ZERO issues with it. However it's sitting in-between one VERY narrow residential street and one "normal" sized residential street. Access is the main issue I have with this because it is going to lead to more and more congestion. I am and I encourage folks that live in the neighborhood to attend the parking meeting tomorrow morning or Thursday to voice your opinions. I think it is close enough to High-the 14 story part will start only about 150 feet back. You are just being a NIMBY! ;) *of course I don't have to deal with the parking and congestion issues....but never mind about that..lol.
  11. Is that some kind of joke over there at Columbus Underground about a plan to demolish the antiques mall building for a fast food joint with a drive thru? It has to be. That is crazy...exactly the opposite of what they should be doing-which is following the example of the Short North and getting rid of these stand alone fast food joints with drive thrus...not creating more of them by demolishing a nice old building.
  12. *unpopular opinion* We need more city built garages like the one by Neighborhood Launch and the one in Riversouth. Built so they can later be converted to non-car uses. Worth the investment to get infill until things change with the car dependency. And it is surprising just how many of those parking lots that cover so much of downtown have disappeared completely, and how many more are awaiting destruction due to planned developments that of course, incorporate parking within them.
  13. ^^ put together those sites would make for a good 16-20 story building. We need to go taller to accommodate the rapidly growing population of the city lol you know, being that we should be near 880,000 when the city estimates are released in May (screw the trolls who got my thread closed). In fact, every thing between Vine and Spruce west of Park all the way to Neil should be a minimum of six floor tall, preferably higher. Parking can go on that block bounded by School, Vine, and Convention Center Drive where that nasty loking electrical place or whatever it is sits. Looks like they could get a long narrow parking deck along the south end of that block, just like the one immediately across the tracks. Something on the west side of that block too. With the city growing so fast, we have to think big. :)
  14. Someone needs to send that height info to places like Emporis. And I really hope this goes through and helps break down the stupid "too high...we will never see the sun..think of the children!!!!" view that some have about structures along the most important street in the city.
  15. YESSSS!!! to a Goodale apartment/condo/mixed use tower of at least 20 floors!!!!!!!

  17. I don't really think of Lancaster or Newark as suburbs, just towns in the metro area. But the growth of them is nice to see. Also do any of these townships in southern Delaware County/Union County actually want to be annexed to any suburb? Would any of them rebel at any attempts to annex and do a Pataskala and incorporate the township as a city? Isn't Jerome township resisting attempts by Dublin?
  18. We all know that really we are not going to get it. Just trying to be realistic here. We don't even have the 600,000 square feet of office space they will need almost immediately. We just are lacking in too many areas-why get our hopes up just to have them dashed. We can be happy to be in the top 20, to have them visit and say nice things-it will all be good for the city. But we will be at most a runner up, get some flowers and a peck on the cheek, and that is it. But I congratulate the city on making a decent proposal and doing the best it can. We need strong civic leadership. I miss Coleman, he was not only a mayor but a cheerleader and constant advocate for the city.
  19. I hate to agree, but I agree. If we get the HQ2 I will eat an entire Kroger's brown paper bag. It just will not happen. We will probably get a nice consolation note though. And I actually have become of the opinion that we will be better off not having it. I've got $100 on us getting it. You can take it to the bank. I take that back...I will take the bet. Six months after the announcement for the loser(you)to pay up. I lost on Trump-I will win on this.

I will never bet on anything again after betting good money that Trump would never get elected President...but I hope someone else on here will take your bet (and then take your money! ;) Funny how I happen to have an old Big Bear sack(yeah I am kind of a hoarder)...you will be eating paper right along with me if we are wrong! ;) We don't need it... It is just too much-we would be Austonized.
  21. I bet when the city listings come out Grove City will be over 40,000-only the second Columbus suburb to ever hit that number. Maybe Westerville also.

  23. Awesome pic. I would love to have seen a drone view of this...if a drone could have survived the winds today.
  24. Why is it that Columbus developments always seem to "regress" when they go through revisions? smh. It is a rare moment when things get upgraded (like that place near Grandview Avenue and Dublin road getting the apparent upgrade to a much more dense development).
