Columbus: Downtown: Convention Center / North Market Area Developments and News
Toddguy replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionI was hoping this was the spot they were talking about. Now if we could only get a hotel/condo/apartment tower with ground floor retail on that spot on Goodale between High and the parking garage-and at least 15 floors-you know at that location it would work especially if they could tap a bit into the garage parking next door.

Columbus: Downtown: Grand Central Development
This is unfortunate. It was not that bad of a plan (just needed a bit of tweaking for the southern triangle part) and it took care of both of those troublesome parcels. This was the first real proposal I know of for that area and when will we ever get another one like it? It just does not sound good for the development future of those parcels-especially the problematic southern triangular one. Just depressing news.

Apparently Abbot 'needs' that nearly vacant land and will not sell.

So now it is a 'mistake' for a number of reasons. http://www.columbusunderground.com/downtown-soccer-arena-proposal-labeled-a-mistake Well we know about the tax part, but what are the other reasons? Will be interesting to know-if we find out. What a sense of resignation to defeat in that response. :(

Whether it was intentional or not, I think including Columbus State and a Children's Theatre and cultural center in the 'Abbot-Ross' proposal was a good move-opposition can be made to seem like they are not only anti-Crew and anti-Education, but also 'anti children' as well lol.

Columbus Crew Discussion
Well it would take a lot to get this going, but I am not against the idea of it. It would only involve the extension of an existing tax and not a new one. But of course the county commissioners have to immediately say 'no' to that. This would be good for activating that area of downtown and drawing the Neighborhood Launch node(which is already creeping north)farther up to this area. The commissioner could have at least kept his damn mouth shut for now given the timing and all IMO. It would just be a lot easier to sell to the public with the extension of something that is already in effect rather than 'brand new taxes'. The city and the business community should be coming together to fight for the Crew along with the fans. I have never been a supporter of teams holding cities hostage over new stadiums, but this seems to be a reasonable accommodation(realizing that it is all just a thrown together idea that has not been properly fleshed out yet). Ideally the city or some other entities should try to buy the team and pry it out of the hands of the lying scheming plotting Precourt.

Columbus: Downtown: Discovery District / Warehouse District / CSCC / CCAD Developments and News
Toddguy replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionIt is not so bad, it will add about 300 residents, have ground floor commercial facing State instead of parking, and will fill in a midblock site leaving more prominent sites for(hopefully)more ambitious proposals.

Columbus: Crime & Safety Discussion
I think a lot of actual gangs have become involved as well which has lead to the market becoming tighter and these may be turf wars. I'm not an expert by any means but I watch or ready the news every day even when traveling and it seems to me that there are a high number of drive-bys which just screams turf war. I think both of these posts explain some of it. The CPD mentioned the higher number of double homicides this year, but I wonder if actual non-fatal shootings are up as well-I have not found the stats for that. It does seem like everything has ratcheted up now, as if Cbus is sort of 'catching up' to some other areas. I have watched Indy's murder rate skyrocket over the last few years compared to that of Cbus and wondered what was the difference between us and them? Well maybe we just needed time to catch up and have the same factors get to the same levels. We really need to try to do something about this opioid epidemic-the city does not need this-nobody does. I haven't a clue what the answers are though I admit. I think I would be ignorant to ignore the gentrification aspect as well. ????

Columbus: Downtown: RiverSouth Developments and News
Toddguy replied to CMH_Downtown's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionI love these last few pics. Looking at the Scioto, how did we ever think it was okay to have it dammed up as a bloated sewage-sedimentation pond? The city really got it right with removing that dam. I have to give the city mad props for that. And the views of RiverSouth where virtually every building in the pic did not exist ten years ago show how much is actually getting built. Getting rid of the hulking badly designed mall really payed off. Even Highpointe is getting sort of hidden and just becoming part of the crowd(fortunately). Even though I have been a skyscraper fan since I was a little kid, I would be perfectly fine with continued infill of 6-12 floors like this all over downtown(but more affordable/below market rate housing and a couple luxury skyscrapers would not hurt).

Columbus: Crime & Safety Discussion
^^ Well why the big jump? This did not start this year...why had we been coasting at 95-105 for years and now we are heading to our highest total in 25 years? What happened to make this year so different? What was the turning point? I do believe it is the drug issue and the Opioid problem, but why did the homicide rate explode this year? That is all I was wondering about. Maybe it is a combination of an unusual number of double murders, the mild winter, plus some other factors related to the drug trade that I am not aware of?
-
Columbus: Crime & Safety Discussion
Well a number of places had no winter and they are actually down from last year. I think it is more than that(although yeah, mild winters usually lead to more crime I do agree in theory).
-
Columbus: Crime & Safety Discussion
So Columbus is up to 111 murders already per today's Dispatch. When we had 106 all of last year...what is it? The opioid epidemic? Damn. We are on course for over 130. At this rate the city will end up with the most murders in over 20 years.

Columbus: Parsons Avenue Corridor Developments and News
Toddguy replied to CMH_Downtown's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionYeah I am not sure either. You mean people who are wanting to put money into trying to turn around areas from the '60's like the Westland Mall area and Hamilton Road?..or something else? I agree that this street has great potential. The city needs more of these old urban retail streets within the old prewar street grid to be brought back to life.

Columbus: Downtown: Grand Central Development
:) -- I very much want to see development too, but I have to do a double take every time I look at the renderings to make sure that really is downtown Columbus in the background and not Las Vegas, Phoenix, Dublin, or Orlando. It just doesn't make any sense. It's like they took the retirement towers in victorian village, threw a coat of gold paint on them and called it a day. In fact, that's who I imagine will be strolling around those ponds every day. That is funny-the same thought went through my mind(the Thurber buildings) the longer I looked at them. The eastern one especially They have to do better than ugly gold boxes. This is all just preliminary and hopefully it will come about with improvements and all. I just love how they omitted the largest single building in the entire plan-the HUGE seven story parking garage which will probably dominate the triangle part given it's seven story height plus it's large areal coverage. If it is the typical concrete garage monstrosity....oh boy. That must be a no-no. They better disguise that thing. And why not some office or residential on top of it?-the views would be great from up there? The top of that garage looks to be at least two acres. How about a rooftop park? They need to do better than two boring at best/ugly as sin at worst bulky box towers and a hulking concrete garage. The northern part seems to have minimal problems by comparison and a lot that is done right. I really hope they tweak this and it comes to fruition. But also, it is all 'very high end, unlike anything seen in Columbus' and all....so the masses need not apply and all. So much development and so much unaffordability. It will basically be another enclave for the wealthy.
-
Columbus: Downtown: Grand Central Development
There is nothing wrong with wanting more and pushing for improvements and at the very least pushing to have this be the very least that they can do. And yes the triangle part is ugly and that gold is awful...so complain about the cladding and offer alternatives to the ponds. Nothing wrong with that. It just seems that with some people, once we actually have a comprehensive proposal for this whole area (both the northern part and the triangle integrated together in some way)which came as a complete surprise to me, instead of working with the proposal and offering ideas for improvement, it is more 'this sucks we deserve the best' attitude. In and ideal world that would happen-we would get the best. But this is reality not a college classroom and we work with what we can get and try to influence what we can by speaking out. The layout of the southern part, the retention ponds, the apparent lack of any real landscaping/hardscaping to try to turn those areas into something at least park-like and usable, the complete lack of the huge garage in the rendering, the hideous color of the buildings shown, the design and placement, number (why only two buildings in such a rather large area) are valid criticisms that I think can be addressed WITH the plan that is shown. And I will take henoius Trump Towers Vegas/Columbus(downsized naturally, this is Cbus we are talking about)triangle-edge-of-downtown-office park over Hilton Avenue-on-Broad-LowPointe at Columbus Commons any time. Hell name the damn thing for the bastard Trump-if he will pay for it and make it come about instead of this fading away like so many other proposals and another recession and then one reason after another of nothing happening with this site. *this is not really directed at you personally-just picked a reasonable post to respond to. Okay the more I look at them the gold buildings are ugly as sin and I don't want 50 years of them either.
-
Columbus: Downtown: Grand Central Development
If you wait for perfect on this 23 acre site then you will either get nothing, or wait for 50 more years. The northern part is not that bad at all-there is virtually no surface parking and in no way is it like any suburban office park in Central Ohio. It looks more like the Dublin Bridge Street project than anything. The southern part?-yeah...more so and it needs work but still how many Central Ohio office parks have buildings over 10 floors and have most parking in a garage rather than surface lots? I think given it's location, it may be ok...not everything within the 960 plus acres that covers the official 'downtown' of Columbus has to have very high density...this is not along Broad or High or along a critical passageway into downtown and it is denser than most of the Arena district itself it seems(no large stadiums that are empty most of the time). Sometimes it seems that people expect way too much and in the wrong places as well. Building six story wooden boxes along High(especially LowPointe and at Gay and High)is much more of a travesty and long term mistake than this would ever be IMO. Yeah they can work on it and all, but the expectations from some people seem to be rather extreme. This site has been a wasteland for over half a century and if they can build this, then build it! flaws and all. I would like to see some improvements as others have suggested but I would rather see this built as is than a dream never built. *There are a number of small things that have been mentioned that could be done to tweak the plan to make it better and yes those should be pushed and suggested...but to say the whole thing is whack is just over-the-top to me. This is a site that is and has been isolated for nearly forever...it is not really a part of 'the core' CBD anyway-too far away and not enough good direct connections. Now if this was suggested for the Scioto Peninsula(the Dallas Office Park southern part particularly)I can understand being underwhelmed). *This development will have over 600 residential units plus hundreds of hotel rooms and retail, office, etc. on a long-term wasteland. i hope it gets tweaked and improved(and God forbid, not downsized) and most of all, actually gets built and ends up not being another 'pipe dream' proposal that we look back on ten years from now. *let the hate begin. JMHO.

Columbus: Downtown: Grand Central Development
I know this proposal is less than perfect or ideal(and I love how the rendering of the lower section conveniently left out the massive 7 floor parking garage), but this site is a difficult site and I had problems seeing how this would ever get developed given the isolation of the site. To see both the north slot and the south triangle developed with some(not exactly perfect)mixed uses and at least some height so there are some in the 12-15 story range, is way more than I ever would have expected. The connections will help, it will be good infill on a difficult site, and given the site, I can forgive some things coming up short. IFthis gets built anything like this I will be very pleased. The height for this area is fine-we need the height in the core anyway IMO, not way out past the Arena district. Maybe they can tweak it to be a little more urban and dense, if it gets built at all(being Schottenstein proposal and all as has been mentioned).

Suburban Sprawl News & Discussion
It is the name of a street...I have never know it as even really an informal name of a neighborhood as I don't think much of anyone really refers to it as that-the first time I saw it called that was on Google maps and I wondered where did that come from?-I have relatives who live on Murray Hill Road and they have never heard of it. Are you from Columbus and did you grow up in the neighborhood or live there now? I have heard a few people refer to it but just a couple of times but never really thought much about it- is this something new that has developed in the last few years? I never heard of it ever referred to that way until a couple of years ago, and just a couple of times-which was why I was so surprised to see it on Google Maps. what neighborhood are you referring to when you say 'Murray Hill'? I grew up on Murray Hill Road in Lincoln Village. Murray Hill is just a street? I could have sworn it was a 'district.' I think the neighborhood is called Murray Hill but in any case, I was thinking of the neighborhood just north of that shopping center where the Westland Area Library is. New Rome/Westland area is generally quite a sh!t hole but I really liked that area north of those decayed shopping centers; you could tell residents take a lot of pride in it - at least around 2009-2011. Murray Hill Road is a street. It runs north and south of Broad street and connects Lincoln Village South(south of Broad) with Lincoln Village North(north of Broad). The neighborhoods are Lincoln Village North and South. The area was built in the 50's and 60's by Murray Lincoln, connected to Nationwide Insurance, and it is about 3000 homes. At the northeast intersection of Murray Hill Road and Broad is a big sign saying 'LINCOLN VILLAGE'. Murray Hill road was named after Murray Lincoln, of course. East of Lincoln Village North is a different neighborhood called Garden Heights, and west of it is place called Little Farms. East of Lincoln Village South is a rundown Appalachian type of neighborhood called oddly enough, Mix Estates. West of it is Columbia Heights and Rome Heights. The whole census designated place in Prairie township south of the railroad tracks, north of Sullivant avenue, west of the freeway(270) and east of Norton and Hilliard-Rome road is called Lincoln Village. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lincoln_Village,_Ohio (and the article is wrong in that 'Rome Heights' is not adjacent to the CDP, but is a part of the CDP of Lincoln Village.) I have seen on google maps the name "Murray Hill' over Lincoln Village South and have heard of the area referred to as that a few times, but the area is really a part of Lincoln Village. *Lincoln Village Plaza also is not that 'decayed' as it seems to be fully occupied and has a Giant Eagle among other things. One of my brothers lives on Deerfield in Lincoln Village North. I also had noticed that the recession/depression hit the area hard and it seemed every third home on South Murray Hill was vacant. Now there is not a vacant house on the entire length of the street. It is a working class area now, a mix of white, black, hispanic. Unlike when I grew up and it was 100 percent white and among my young friends their fathers varied from factory workers to police officers and attorneys. I really don't understand why you're upset. I gave props to 'Murray Hill' by explaining what a great community and hidden gem it is. Whether it's a street or neighborhood, something inspired me to call the neighborhood 'Murray Hill.' I really believe that it was due to signage and marketing but even if that's not the case, does it really matter? Why the hell would you be offended by the kind words I've said, regarding the neighborhood which I've put in the spotlight against Hilliard or the City of Columbus? I said that the area is a hidden gem and that I'd rather live there, than Hilliard. Jesus Christ. What are you complaining about? Nobody is upset or complaining..why would you say that? What phrases or words did I use that conveyed that I was upset or complaining? I was just explaining the neighborhood since I grew up in it. That is it. What I don't understand is the apparent hostility to my comments here. What did I exactly write than suggested I was offended, upset, or complaining? And no I am not upset, complaining, or offended now...just surprised really. Why did pointing out some things and offering information about the neighborhood warrant such a harsh response? Also it is not about 'props' or what anyone thinks of the place. It has steadily gone downhill(especially after the closing of Westinghouse and GM nearby) and I myself do not think of any of it as any kind of 'gem' of any sort. There are some decent sections but that is about it IMO. Maybe I just don't need to be on this forum anymore...I just don't understand the way people respond here.

Upper Arlington had over 28,000 in 1960-by far the largest suburb. Also the above 5,000 crowd in 1960 included Grove City, Hilliard, Reynoldsburg, Worthington, Grandview Heights, and Westerville.

Columbus: Downtown: Discovery District / Warehouse District / CSCC / CCAD Developments and News
Toddguy replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionI love that they are going to make Library Park a pedestrian walkway rather than a road. I hope the standard is of the Neighborhood Launch quality. I would think that with the roadway turned into a pathway and with the views of the park, these would be highly sought after. Hell I would push a nun down stairs to live there.
