I would trade him for one solitary dead and withered palm frond. lol
  2. Just look at that map...so areas like Westgate and Eastmoor that are 100% walkable in Columbus are suburban, but areas that are sprawled out in far south Columbus around Obetz are urban, and Polaris of all places is also urban? Right. I have to think there must be more, additional, or better criteria to determine 'urbanity'. Also another way to bash Columbus on this board (lol) I swear if God came down to Cincinnati and Cleveland and said to them, "I will grant you anything you want, but with one condition-whatever I do for you, I will do twice as much for Columbus", Cincinnati and Cleveland would get together, and finally have an answer for God-"destroy half of our cities, and destroy ALL of Columbus!" lol
  3. Those complaints were ridiculous. 'transient housing'-please. I would love to force them to build 1,000 units of section 8 housing on the site, and have the architecture of the buildings look like a nod to Kaliningrad. Classist pricks.
  4. Well the Cincinnati.com article had some info. At least there is backup for his story. He has made renovations including new windows and painting, etc. and neighbors have seen him working on it frequently and his mother also supported the story. There is certainly evidence of the assault and how it went down (pretty much like he said). He might not have the right permits etc. at this time, maybe he is just getting started on making basic repairs on the property and the 'community center' was something down the line-sounds like that might have been waiting for if/when money became available, which it has at least now. Also filed a police report. I imagine he is hardly the first guy who gets jumped and doesn't immediately file a report, given his situation and all. I wonder how much crime simply is not reported, no snitching, etc. :( What caught my eye was this: "The Evanston area that Ronald Moon describes in his video shows evidence of violence this week. Thursday afternoon, a man was arrested and charged with felonious assault after he jumped in front of a vehicle in the 1800 block of Kinney Ave., pointed a gun at a victim and ordered the victim to strip off his clothing, arrest records state." :-o Does not sound like an ideal neighborhood. (kind of reminds me of some of the crazy stuff that happened in my old Wilshire Heights neighborhood in Cbus. lol ) link to the story: http://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/2015/06/06/cincinnati-man-wants-to-build-community-center/28526585/ Sounds like he wanted something that specialized in things that the nearby community center did not provide, and he has a lot of connections through his music, etc. Hope it works out for him somehow.
  5. I watched it right after it came out and had no reason to doubt it...but now all over the place there are people who are saying it is just a gofundme scam. I guess I thought that this would be covered more locally and there might be more info about it. I guess I was wrong. I really want this story to be on the up and up and all... that the people who have given over $50,000.00 to this are doing something positive and not being taken for a ride, and that this is really a good person who is trying to do something good for his community. It just really touched me I guess.
  6. Does anyone in the Cincy area know if this story is legit? http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/06/05/ronald-moon-community-center_n_7520314.html I saw somewhere where there was no police report, and where an actual community center five blocks from his place (1853 Kinney Avenue) said they had never heard of his attempting to turn his recently deceased father's house into a community center. His account is being questioned now and I would hate it if it were just some stupid made up stuff. Either way, stuff like this and other videos going viral of attacks in our cities is just not good-you know how people love to run with the "Ohio cities are violent cesspools' stuff. :( *Not trying to start anything, just wondering if anyone close to there knows anything about this.
  7. I think one thing that has not been mentioned about Columbus is that the great slowdown in annexation (only about 30 square miles in the last 25 years) may have something to do with the Win-Win Agreement about Columbus City Schools that went into effect about that time. Up until then, any new land annexed into Columbus could still be in a suburban school district. Since then, any annexed territory is automatically in Columbus City Schools. If you look at a recent map of the Columbus City Schools boundary, it is basically a central blob(like it has been for some time) but there are also little sections scattered about, in some cases quite far away the old city schools boundary, that look like little planets orbiting the larger sun of CCS. Columbus grew primarily by annexing undeveloped land, not established subdivisions. Columbus tried for years to annex the established areas of Lincoln Village and Blacklick Estates-no way they were going to Columbus. Given that annexation means Columbus schools, no existing area(IMO) is going to choose to go from a suburban school district to Columbus schools. And Columbus is pretty much surrounded now except for a few areas. No more existing areas in Delaware County are going to go to Columbus-southern Delaware County is pretty much developed now. With New Albany, Gahanna, Pataskala, Reynoldsburg, Pickerington, Canal Winchester, and Groveport presenting an almost unbroken wall to the East/Southeast, and with the northwest expansion checked by Hilliard and Dublin, there are only two areas for growth- between Hilliard and Grove City to the west, and between Grove City and Rickenbacker to the south. The southern area is really not suitable for much development, and the western area is blocked by the Darby Accord- it has pretty much reached the western limit available. At this point I don't think Columbus could significantly grow in area(as in grow into developable areas) if it wanted to. It is going to have to be a process of densifying and filling in to maintain growth. There are still some pockets here and there and some land on the periphery, but it is not a lot of area left. The same thing that has happened to Columbus has happened to a number of sunbelt cities as well. Dallas is locked in by suburbs, Phoenix is blocked in except for an area to the north, Indy is locked in to Marion County, and has pretty much filled that in except for some areas in the southwest and southeast. These cities are now in the same position that other cities are- locked in by suburbs. Annexation just bought time, but now many of them are in the same boat as other locked in cities. As the sprawl continues, it will not be within city limits, but in the suburbs. In this last estimate, just three of Indy's suburbs together grew more than Indy itself. For Dallas. Frisco and other outer burbs are booming. For Phoenix the same thing.
  8. That article also forgot to mention in it’s list that Minneapolis and Oakland are also larger with a smaller area. And regarding their comparison of Columbus with Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Toledo combined, a better comparison would be with Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Dayton combined. Columbus: 217.2 square miles, 835,957 people, density of 3,848 per square mile. Cinci-Cleve-Dayton: 211.2 square miles, 828,689 people, density of 3,923 per square mile. So combine those three cities and you have nearly the same size, density, and population as Columbus. Also with the combination of Cleve-Cincy-Toledo, the density is 4,099 per square mile, again not that far from that of Columbus
  9. Columbus now larger than Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Dayton combined!!!!! (and with a nearly identical area and density to all three combined as well) Columbus 13th fastest growing city in the nation!!! Columbus poised to overtake Indianapolis in population(only 12,831 people behind)! http://factfinder.census.gov/faces/tableservices/jsf/pages/productview.xhtml?src=bkmk okay, somebody had to do it. Let the attacking begin! :-) (where is the hiding emoticon?)
  10. I would imagine a reservation?-given it is a restaurant and they are a group. Some of these abbreviated 'words' are ok-others, not so much.

Actually I was mistaken when I said Mound Street was Darbyshire at one point. It was Dartmoor, not Darbyshire.
  12. Are there any dimensions of that site on the southeast site where the office building idea is? If they are on there I cannot make them out. Just curious, thanks. According to the Franklin County Auditor's website, that parcel is 198' x 266' and listed as 1.293 acres. Thanks. That is larger than I would have thought.

I used to live here(for nearly 20 years). Also the areas directly to the east are officially included in Wilshire Heights I believe(my deed and stuff had a map of the area). Binns Blvd. in particular has a number of very nice and well kept homes. I always thought that the proximity to Bishop Ready Catholic High School always helped this neighborhood a bit. And it reminded me a bit of a smaller, lesser version of Westgate. At one point Mound street in this area was called Darbyshire I believe. At least that is what is on the map of it I still have.
  15. I think it is ok(passable) but I am sure like many others I wish it was taller. An improvement over surface lots for sure. Does anyone know what the height of this building is at the tallest point(where that narrow part sticks up above the rest)? I have never seen that listed anywhere...was just wondering it it actually qualifies as a high rise (115 feet or above and all)? I know it is only seven stories, but they seem to be pretty tall stories. Thanks!
  16. I have no idea of where to post this question, but since it is a 'sprawl' thread.. Why is it that everywhere I look, Columbus is listed as being about 210 or 212 square miles, but the city itself ( http://development.columbus.gov/demographics.aspx ) lists the corporate boundary as approximately 227 square miles with an increase of 4.6 percent since 2000? Not sure if this belongs here, but this is a very knowledgeable group here and thought maybe someone ( like ColDayMan, who knows just about anything) could answer this? Thanks. I just like to keep track of the statistics for the city and all, so this bugs, ya know? *also, how many posts does it take to get off of the 'surface lot' lol?
  17. Nice start..now PLEASE do something with the rest of the Scioto Peninsula and those awful surface lots paved and unpaved. I wish they could build a parking garage attached to Cosi and turn the area between Cosi and the tracks into somekind of park..what a site for summer festivals etc. with the skyling wrapping around to the east. I would love to see lots of trees and and greenery there. -it is almost the perfect setting for a central city park!
  18. You would think that if they cannot work with the existing facility(which is bunker like..(How could they have designed that awful High street side like that???)They could do Something with the site itself. I would think the site would be good given that is has that mega parking garage behemoth attached to it by those walkways. I would not shed a tear if they imploded/demolished it. Wish they would line that strip of S. High between the garage and the street with some mid rise housing with ground level retail-close enough to the new courthouse and all. Thjey could incorporate resident parking(this is C-bus and people MUST have their cars) in the garage that would be right behind the housing. I really hope Nationwide Realty can build off of the Judicial/Courthouse hub that is southern downtown and with this and RiverSouth pull off something that is even halfway as successfull as the Arena district.
  19. I have come around to finally leaving the Hilltop after many years..my little neighborhood is going through a transition. Funny about the article mentioning used washing machines. I will be selling one of those, plus a dryer, freezer, etc. lol. Sick and tired of the increasing criminal element and drug shit in this little area I live in. Plus ancient house needs $$$$$ work. Very true that it is impossible to find anything close..hell you have to drive 5 miles to find even a Chipotle!
  20. Actually Columbus is at 225.9 sq. miles(if not slightly more) and still growing. http://development.columbus.gov/Bizdevelopment/Demographics/Columbus/CityColumbus.asp
  21. Good thing Columbus was smart enought to see the way the wind was blowing and annex! annex! annex! so it was not hemmed in and areas like Polaris(unfortunately these developments happening and urban sprawl in general is beyond the control of one city council and mayor) are in Columbus and the city has at least been able to cash in on some of the sprawl rather than miss out on it entirely. Not excusing the bad decisions that have hurt neighborhoods and downtown(retail anyone?) ..but would the city be better off now if it was still 40 square miles and with 244,000 people??? And alot of the decrease is not only due to suburban flight/abandonment/razing of neighborhoods('urban renewal') but family size has shrunk as well. Would be interesting to see HOUSEHOLD number comparisons for then and now
  22. Possibly Coleman is just holding off on something 'controversial' like streetcars before the election..and will go forward with it afterwards.? Hope springs eternal. :-D Firefighting and street improvements are approved of by nearly everyone. I would rather he play it safe, get re-elected, and then go full force for some of these downtown improvements after securing his position. Maybe that is just wishful thinking but I am sticking with it. *Isn't Coleman committed to using none/very little city money for the streetcars anyway?*
  23. Amen and Hallelujah for another condo tower!(and one that is not on the high luxury end as well). The setbacks should help it blend I think. Not so bad now is it? :-)
  24. I agree that it will take a wholesale demolition of much of the existing housing stock to bring Franklinton around. Maybe saving some of the historical buildings, some of the nicer salvagable old abandoned schools, etc. but the basic housing stock sucks and is comprised in large part of decayed 100+ year old wooden dry-as-tinder firetraps. Much of the housing stock is just not up to the standards of Old Town East, the Short North, etc. A Jeffrey Place 'new neighborhood' type of approach is needed IMO. And that area around West Rich street near I think it is Sunshine Terrace(?) is full of crackheads and the like. Had a friend move from a place on W. Rich last year from across the eight story housing block there. Sofas flying off 6th floor balconys, people taking potshots at passing cars, residents on balconies using dinner plates as frisbees to see if they could take out car windows from the cars parked on the nearby streets...who wants to deal with that stuff??
  25. Franklin County 2000 Population: 1,068,978 2005 Population Est.: 1,090,771 -growth : 21,793 City of Columbus: 2000 Population: 711,470 2005 Population estimate: 730,657 -growth : 19,187 (Us Census figures city of Columbus..http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cache:UuK5zoqBccIJ:www.hawaii.gov/dbedt/info/census/popestimate/popest_2005_subcount/SUB-EST2005-01.xls+columbus+ohio+population+us+census+2005&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=11&gl=us) so the rest of Franklin County, including Dublin, New Albany, Hilliard, etc etc. with over 350,000 people had an increase of only 2,606? With these suburbs growing like they are? :? :? :? Something is not right here *and I know there are parts of Columbus in Delaware and Licking counties , but the actual population in those areas is relatively very small*
