  1. Ah! Colday, I was wondering what happened in that Wendy's... I thought maybe I was crazy for thinking there used to be a Tim Horton's in there. Thanks for explaining.
  2. Looks like it was a cool event! and a beautiful day for it. Thanks for sharing the pics :)
  3. :-) Great tour! I'm looking forward to part 2.

When my friend and I spent the summer in Philadelphia, this guy at a pizza restaurant wanted to know where we were from, and when we said Ohio he asked if we lived on a farm. That was my first experience with people outside the state's perception of Ohio. But I think most people have at least heard of Cleveland. I wouldn't worry about people overseas not knowing much about Ohio - how much do we really know about their little counties or areas, without having traveled extensively or studied a lot of geography?
  5. I agree... I got spanked a few times in childhood, and in my teens my mom once or twice slapped my face for mouthing off (which didn't teach me anything, I just learned to dodge away after making a smart-aleck comment!). But nothing that ever left BRUISES. That definitely is crossing the line.
  6. Thanks Punch! I've missed the site, but since January school and work have kept me too busy to visit regularly. I tried to catch up with all the old posts once, over Spring Break, but once the new quarter started I fell behind again. I just need to get my priorities straightened out - No homework til I've read all new posts! :-P Are there any plans for a UO meet once this Gateway thing finally opens?
  7. A grocery store would be a great idea! I wonder how well suited that location is for a grocery store, though - it seems a little on the small side. Half the space is in the basement - don't know how that would work with grocery stockroom needs. Parking is also rather limited. What about a restaurant? Not fast food, someplace to sit down. Perhaps someplace that would stay open all or almost all night... a la the old Insomnia? *Secretly hoping for Skyline to come back to campus area*

I guess I never posted my pic here... this is me a few weeks ago: I've been sucked into a vortex of school and work, plus I acquired a new boyfriend, so I haven't had time to visit the site in months :-( But I still advertise for the site with my UrbanOhio.com bumper sticker on my class binder!
  9. You know what's kind of funny about the Dispatch... I subscribed for weekend delivery in 2003, and stopped getting the paper in summer 2004, but they are still sending me the daily headlines in my email and allowing me to access the website free of charge. ??

bah. I won't join this on principle... My high school class has its own website, my college has a student-run message board site, and my real friends and I have an email list, so I don't see the point anyway. I'm not interested in meeting random people or being stalked. Now watch me join it after all in the next 6 months :-P
  11. The article says the law was intended as I don't think downtown Columbus qualifies as a scenic rural area! I also don't buy that the large ads are a distraction to drivers. In that case anything near the road could also be a distraction.
  12. Here is a pic of "8 on the Square" from today (this is the E. Broad Street side)

I have to disagree with your post Kendall... I grew up in the suburbs (Fairfield) and in both the neighborhoods my family lived in, we had good neighbors. Especially on the street we lived on first, for 10 years - there was a big block party every summer that a lot of people got involved in, and people did get to know each other, and would chat when going for evening walks or doing yard work. It's not just a matter of meeting people on the way in or out of a building; neighbors meet in the grocery store or around town doing errands. I know we used to run into the family across the street from us almost literally every time we went to Kroger! I think a lot of it did hinge on the families with kids, though, because of the schools' functions and kids in the neighborhoods bringing the parents together. And it also depends on the personalities of the neighbors. Maybe we were just lucky to have very friendly ones. Maybe in these new cookie-cutter developments that are springing up everywhere, this neighborliness doesn't happen because everyone is moving in virtually at once, so there is no sense of the older, more established neighbors welcoming the newcomers into the neighborhood.
  15. well, off the top of my head, I would like to see something like Rag-o-Rama move in there, and the aforementioned decent grocery store. A restaurant or coffee shop that stays open 24 hours would be great also, to allow more options besides just Steak & Shake and McDonald's. I would also like to see the return of Skyline :-( but I doubt that would happen. maybe a video-rental store? & a graeters...
  16. That Olentangy Village is in a good location, I looked at it when I thought I was going to move last year. http://www.olentangyvillage.com/ the rents were too expensive for me though... I can't wait til I can afford someplace nice
  17. That Kroger is awful - It has no selection of anything, it's tiny! They don't even have a cosmetics section (I know you males don't care, but most grocery stores do have cosmetics!) The produce is dismal, the deli is gross. The lines are always long, there are only about 6 checkouts (usually only 2 or 3 are open) and 4 self-checkouts - and during peak times they close all the self-checkouts! The Giant Eagle in Clintonville is the next closest grocery store, & much nicer, but too far to walk to, & a longer bus ride than I usually feel like planning for. I think a new grocery store would be great in Gateway but I doubt that idea is "flashy" enough for the developers.

I live in a little box of an apartment, about a block away from Ohio State's campus. It is a studio, one room setup. When I first moved in it reminded me of a hotel - I felt like I was off someplace on vacation for the first few days. But now it just sucks because there's no storage space, there's really not enough room for all the furniture I have in here, & it really doesn't feel private (can hear neighbors' tvs, music, arguments, etc.), and the heaters don't work all that well. But I think I will be here at least another year, & possibly til I finish school. One window has an ugly view of the alley out back (dumpsters and cars, a shed with graffiti), and from the other windows I see the side of the apartment building next door, about 10 feet away. Sometimes I am awakened by people fighting or screaming outside and I have to decide whether or not to call the police: is someone getting raped or mugged, or is it just drunk idiots? Usually it's just the latter. As far as "amenities," being near campus helps. There's a post office and a branch of my bank on campus. I can walk to campus in five minutes (reach my classes within 20 minutes at the most) or to any number of fast food places (there are 3 Wendy's within like, two miles of one another). The "Ghetto Kroger" (as it's locally called) and branch of Columbus Metro library are within a 15 minute walk. Downtown is about 20-25 minutes away by bus.

Mine is a picture I took at the Park of Roses It doesn't exactly go with the "urban" theme of the forum, but the park is one of my favorite Columbus places :-)
  20. that looks like a totally different building!

  22. gateway center news: - - - - - - - - - - - - - CONSTRUCTION ZONE Campus Partners’ Gateway project gains retail tenants, apartments Monday, January 24, 2005 Mike Pramik THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH Campus Partners said it has leased 40 percent of the retail space at the South Campus Gateway project and has begun pitching its apartments to Ohio State University law students. An Aug. 1 opening is being projected for Gateway, the $150 million development between 9th and Chittenden avenues along High Street. Confirmed tenants include Barnes & Noble, Finish Line, Happy Greek Gateway restaurant and Panera. An eight-screen theater will be operated by the managers of Drexel and Arena Grand theaters. Most of Gateway’s apartments are in a building on the west side of High Street near Ohio State University’s law school. It will include 21 studio, 35 one-bedroom and 35 two-bedroom units. That building also will house the Buckeye Barrister Club, a gathering place for the law-school community. A building across the street, between Chittenden and E. 11 th avenues, will have seven studios, 30 one-bedroom and 30 two-bedroom apartments. Two buildings on either side of a new parking garage will each offer six one-bedroom flats; six two-story, three-bedroom townhouses; and one three-story, three-bedroom apartment. 23. cool... and good that they are putting it on top of the parking lot instead of eliminating a park!
  24. nah it's just a big ugly M-A-L-L, boxy and plain on the outside, "contemporary" inside, pretty much like any old mall from the 80s or 90s.
  25. I saw that article. They should put in a grocery store... someplace for all the new condo dwellers to get their groceries. or a Target... The Gallery mall in Philadelphia's Center City/Market East had a Kmart.. of course there was also a train station inside the mall so it is not even comparable. I have no problem with a school being in there just as long as SOMETHING is. It's SO empty! The place could use some remodeling too - just one example, the women's restroom is at the far end of a long, narrow corridor that feels very isolated and unsafe. There is actually a security camera inside the restroom. Who knows what led to that being installed.
