  1. It sounds like this 'Phase 1' is going to be the office tower and not much else? Maybe the promenade/riverside stuff too? Even if that's the case, it's a start....

Mine: *Littering *People who pull into a driveway or in front of a house and lay on the horn (especially at night). Get out of your damn car and go ring the f***ng doorbell!! *A house that has a brick face and vinyl on the other 3 sides. You're not fooling anyone. Actually, the first 2 are peeves; the 3rd is something I find incredibly preposterous. Who thinks that looks good?!

The Greek Heritage festival at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Tremont is a good time. Runs all weekend.
  4. ^Yeah, that could be tough to overcome. For those in the know, what are the odds Wolstein eventually sells his land down there to another developer? I can't see him sitting on that land indefinitely with no money to do anything, or would he? It's not like he can open some parking lots down there and generate some revenue.
  5. If somehow the clouds part and Wolstein receives his financing in full, can this project still get completed in time to accomodate those firms (E&Y, ??) whose leases were expiring in other bldgs around town? I'm thinking not likely. So what will those firms do? Stay put temporarily? Look at something completely different, i.e. Jacobs' PS Tower or K&D's Ameritust project? Has this been brought up anywhere else? Just curious.

I've always dug Canadian rock, i.e. the Tragically Hip, Sloan, 54-40, etc. Right now I'm really digging Matt Mays & el Torpedo (Halifax), and Sam Roberts Band (Montreal). I've seen both live multiple times and they do not disappoint. They're definitely my fave 2 right now.

^I frickin love that song! 90's power-pop rules. most of the time.
  8. Cleveland-area: The 5 o'clock (lakewood) McGinty's (lkwd) Sunset Grill (Whiskey Island) The Southside (tremont) Lincoln Park Pub (tremont) Prosperity (tremont) Harbor Inn (flats west bnk) Toledo: El Camino Real Playmaker's (w toledo) blarney
  9. I think this is a great idea and you couldn't pick a better time to find fix 'em up's. I'd like to start something like this in Toledo in the near future. I'm a carpenter and I spend a lot of time in Cleveland, so I'd be interested in helping this thing get off the ground ( I don't have a lot of spare cash right now, but I could contribute my carpentry skills :-))
  10. Excellent news about St Colman and St Ignatius; losing St James is still sad.....I've attended all 3 and it seemed to me that parish was the most vibrant of the 3.....still, great news about Colman's and Ignatius!
  11. ^I would think that a lot of those laid-off construction workers are probably of the 'illegal' variety and don't file for unemployment...they simply cross the border and go home.
  12. Just when I think I've seen every aspect of the Mall deal attacked............wow. Our 'film industry'? Really??

^I'd through Charleston, SC in that lot, too.

Sidelines Bar & Grill opened up a 2nd location right across the st from one of the gates; the wife and I were there a week ago (they have an excellent fish fry). They should kick ass once the arena opens.
  15. ^Completely and totally unsustainable....I hope everyone on here who has their eyes open to this is making preparations for what's coming down the pike, i.e. monster-inflation, food shortages, civil unrest. The government's actions make those likelier as the days go by. Do not trust what the media/govt is selling. Purchase as much precious metal as you can, have a stockpile of food, learn how to grow as much of your own as possible, have the means to protect your family and property, and pray for the best. The piper must be paid....it's gonna be a brave new world here in the good old USA if things don't radically change (I fear it's too late already). "Hope for the best, prepare for the worst"

^Agree with you totally. Legalize and tax drugs; urban/gang crime would drop off a cliff. It's amazing how little we learn from history; or is it because there are powerful interests who enrich themselves on the status quo?

No doubt the new arena will help the existing businesses around it; I really hope, even in this economy, that it can help a few more sprout up around it. There are some gorgeous, empty buildings around it just crying for rehab and investment. We'll see, I guess.
  18. Was there for a week last November; the people are jerks and the city is gorgeous. Can't wait to go back when it's warmer.
  19. I would say one of the perks of living in Toledo is only being an hour from Ann Arbor, lol. No seriously, Ann Arbor is gorgeous and a ton of fun. Love it.
  20. So does this mean the river won't be used for shipping purposes anymore? I find that hard to believe, no? ^The steel mill would still need ore delivered to it; there are several other private bulk-handlers that would require ship access as well.
  21. On a side note, there was a story in today's Ashtabula Star-Beacon about a rep from BQ Energy speaking about his company's plans to develop a wind-farm in AC (I don't know how to post newspaper articles in their entirety, sorry). BQ Energy is a NY company that developed the windfarm off of Buffalo/Lackawanna and has done others around the country. They are looking at land along the Lake in Conneaut that sits adjacent to the P&C dock Co. and the prison on the east side. *An FYI for you history buffs out there; the land they are looking at was going to be the site of Andrew Carnegie's state-of-the-art steel mill before he sold out to J.P. Morgan in 1901 in a deal that helped create U.S. Steel (that new mill was eventually built at Gary, IN); this land was also looked at in the late 70's by US Steel for a new mill before the changing economic forces obliterated much of the domestic steel industry. The site was also a finalist for the saturn plant that eventually went to Tennessee. :-( www.starbeacon.com
  22. ^That's a shame. I thought the old Harbor hs bldg would've been a great candidate for a West-tech style conversion into apts (albeit much smaller). On the bright side, that piece of land is smack dab in the middle of the harbor area and just steps from walnut beach and bridge st...it would be an excellent spot for residential or mixed-use development..........someday :|

^As a carpenter and as a lover of all things urban, I've been saying to my buddies that this is going to be the trend (and a potentially lucrative business) of the future. As the economy worsens and credit gets tighter, the U.S. may find itself having a harder time financing imports in the coming years - leading to shortages of whatever we don't make here. Deconstructing/salvaging homes and structures (along with rehabbing existing ones instead of building new in greenfields) will be a way to keep the business of construction (i.e., economic development) going in the future.

Sorry I missed it; ended up working later than I intended.

I'll be back in town for this....sounds cool; I've always wanted to put some faces to (screen)names.
