Question: Where exactly is the "Oregon District"?

Excellent article; I've tried to explain this subject to friends and family with limited to no success. These guys describe it much more eloquently and concisely.
  3. "Greenspace" sucks.
  4. My port authority source had no knowledge of this arrangement at all, and there isn't too much in the way of development/construction that goes on in this town without him knowing about it or being directly involved. That being said, I hope this is one of those rare instances where he is out of the loop. We'll just have to wait and see.

^Dude, Cory Snyder was THE MAN. What an arm.
  6. I will ask my Port Authority source tonight if this has legs or not. Hope so.

Journeyman carpenter.....Local 21 in Cleveland. Previously spent 3 years in logistics/trucking field.

You guys seen "Varsity Blues"? I was also a backup qb in hs who took over for the injured starter all the while playing for an a$$hole coach.
  9. ^The public forum is great, but I've read that the county is under no obligation to follow the forum's reccomendations or anyone else's. They will ultimately build it where they want it. :x
  10. ^I thought they were staying where they were (Celebreeze bldg?) and renovating their current space, no?
  11. ^I heard the exact same thing. Unfortunately it appears that the FEB's expansion has come at the expense of Pesht. For now. Pesht has always been the biggest questionmark in terms of viability, simply due to it's scale. Personally I think FEB is more important. You can't have an abandoned waterfront. Don't forget either that FEB and the other projects had a couple year head start. Things of this magnitude don't sprout up over night. It may not happen right now. But I think with the momentum being built in downtown, when FEB is up and running, the ECP is finished, CSU has made their major moves on Euclid, 668, ameritrust complex, the district of design is in full swing, the avenue district (essentially 2010... and I think the redevelopment of E.12th is going to have a bigger impact than people realize)... and downtown is the "cool" place to be business wise. The climate could be quite "ripe" for putting the crown jewel / finishing piece in place. ^McCleveland, I love your optimism and whole-heartedly agree. While Stark's project is either dead or going to be significantly scaled back for now, the site is simply too central and with economic forces changing the way we look at downtowns and central cities (primarily increasing fuel prices), along with all the developments already happening here, that will make those lots too valuable to sit vacant much longer into the future. The question will be whether Stark eventually gets this built or someone else takes the torch.
  12. An excellent idea whose time has come. One question, how much acreage would be required for this facility and whereabouts in Toledo would such a facility be likely; the current port at the mouth of the river or somewhere else upriver? This proposal, along with the one for Cleveland just intrigues the hell out of me.
  13. No way are they trying to do this. This is just a bad joke, right? We go from a study several years ago (2004?) that narrowed down the sites to 2, TC and the existing site; the existing site was favored by that study. We now were expecting a winner to be chosen any day now from those 2 sites and now they're adding new locations to the debate?!? WTF!? IMO, some serious back-door shenanigans are going on and downtown is going to get screwed.
  14. Has there been any news regarding the potential UT law school move downtown?
  15. KOOW, this is one of the worst ideas I've heard come out of any of the candidates so far, and there's been quite a few. James Howard Kunstler has a great rant on it over on his blog: www.kunstler.com Hmm, let's artificially lower the price of gas for the summer driving season, increasing demand (and price) and taking the focus off of the big problem that underlies the increasing prices, than re-instate the tax sometime in the fall in time for the election? Who thought of that? Thinking like this is why the US is just screwed down the road.
  16. Ah, budgeting.....a lost art. I put myself somewhere in between the 2 extremes, but more towards "not tracking my every expenditure" crowd, though I'm probably better than a lot of people,IMO. I will add that I only use credit cards in an emergency (I rely on my debit card day-to-day) and really don't carry much cash, except on weekends and special shopping trips. My fiance is much better at sticking to a budget and keeping track of expenditures.
  17. ^3rd photo from the end.
  18. I made it to Stone Mad with the fiance last friday evening for the first time. My thoughts: -Very fancy for an "Irish" place. Beautiful woodwork and craftsmanship everywhere. -No tv's or music. I'm ok with no tv's but the silence was a bit weird in that I could overhear everyone else's conversations and I knew they could hear mine. It was a bit unnerving. I would've liked some soft background music (maybe some traditional Irish music?) to at least add some privacy to one's conversation. -The middle lounge area is cozy. A nice place to hang with a drink and relax. -The rear area w/the bocce court feels like a completely different place. Little tables with red&white checkered table cloths and the menu up on a couple of chalkboards, they had no printed menus (with no prices, a big pet peeve of mine) I felt like I had walked into some deli in Little Italy. *Rant Warning* Please, please, please, put prices next to the menu items; just because people walk into your place, don't assume that money doesn't matter to them and it can be a tad embarrassing to ask a server how much something costs before ordering. I find restuarants that do this to be awfully presumptuous and turn me off. -We didn't eat there, so I can't comment on the quality of the food. After taking everything into account, I wouldn't make a place like this a steady hang. Just too fancy for my speed. However, I can see this place being a really hot spot once the Capitol and NW theatres are done and people look for a place to have a drink before or after a show. This place would really fill that kind of niche.
  19. ^The Kindler's bldg is going to be the biggest loss down there, IMO. I was hoping it could've been integrated in to the new plans somehow.
  20. Regarding the years of cheap oil in the eighties/nineties, it's also worth noting that the Alaskan North Slope and British North Sea fields were at peak production by then, helping to flood the world market with oil, depressing the price so much that many domestic drillers in the US (west Texas and La are prime examples) went under and also contributed mightily to the downfall and breakup of the USSR, as their prime source of revenue at the time (and now) was oil. The popular myth is that the US got the Soviets caught up in our "Star Wars" arms race and bankrupted them when they couldn't keep up. Not really true. We bankrupted them by flooding the market with oil (ours and OPEC's) and strangling them with shriveled oil revenue and an unsustainable empire and foreign wars (Afghanistan). Sound familiar? Ok, back on topic.
  21. I'll second KJP in saying that I've never had a bad meal at Applebee's....that being said, I hope this is going to be integrated into a larger multi-story building and NOT a stand-alone suburban-style store surrounded by parking. If that's the case I'll be righteously pissed.
  22. I love the new Carmona deal. Tip of the hat to Shapiro and Carmona for getting this done. This kid is the deal.
  23. No sarcasm present in my last post; the rebuilding of the road (didn't know about that) must be directly related to what I was told last night. This Whiskey Island business is in addition to some more news coming about the port's foray into intermodal business and reviving that industrial corridor adjacent to their future home. Really exciting stuff; the port is really trying to expedite this plan. Stay tuned.
  24. Stay tuned for some exciting news coming about the port and what they've got in store for Whiskey Island. That's all I can really say right now.
