  1. Per my source on the Port Authority board, Eaton is on board with Wolstein's project. It will be among "$5 billion worth of construction kicking off next year" and lasting for the next 4-5 yrs across NE Ohio; "the biggest building boom in this region in 25 years". That is all the info I have to share right now. Thank you.
  2. Welcome bewwolv15! I live in this neighborhood too, up by the new Rockport Square development on Detroit ave. Side note: The Brothers' Lounge sign was all lit up tonight when I drove thru the 117 & Detroit intersection. Alas, I did not explore further as I was in a hurry to get home. Anyone know anything about an opening?
  3. Well, Ron Paul is running for the Republican nomination, so I'm voting Republican this time. Otherwise, I consider myself a libertarian conservative. The Democrats and Republicans (outside of Paul) running for Prez in '08 are part of the same machine...they are ruled by the same masters. If Paul isn't elected, it won't make a bit of difference who is; we're in for more war, more attacks on our civil liberties, a continually declining dollar and ever higher national debt. So if you like the path this nation is on, vote for anyone else besides Ron Paul. Bring back Constitutional government, vote for Ron Paul.
  4. Hey Big Drizzle, one of my good buddies graduated from Ignatius in '98, Ryan Farrell. Know him?

Whew! Thank God, all that worrying for nothing. I'm headin out to buy that full-size 4x4 pick-up I've always wanted right now.
  6. I will be using Amtrak for the first time this week; I'm taking the Lake Shore Limited out of Cleveland this coming thursday morning to Boston. I'll be returning the following thursday morning. Can I leave my Jeep at the station the entire time I'm gone? The Amtrak System timetable I have says that short-term parking is available at the Cleveland station for free but overnight parking isn't (huh?). I would take the rapid, but we're not supposed to get back into Cleveland until 3am on T-giving day. I really don't want to wait around the station for a couple hours with the fiance that morning waiting for the rapid to start running. KJP or any other amtrak veterans with info would be greatly appreciated!
  7. ^CH Jake, you're correct about the exterior asbestos. As long as it is contained (in the concrete), it is fine. It would have to be removed prior to demo; now that would be expensive.
  8. Looks like I'll be back from NJ in time for this meet; Wonder Bar sounds cool, haven't been there yet. Are the Browns playing at 1 or 4 that day? Depending on how the Tribe does tonight, that could be a pretty sweet day for Cleveland sports fans.
  9. I'm working in Red Bank, NJ about an hour south of NYC and the locals here are most definitely behind the Tribe right now. Kind of cool. Makes being away from the Cleve during this most awesome playoff run not so bad.
  10. I'm sorry I missed the party; I got sent to Red Bank, NJ that wednesday for work and I'm stuck here for the rest of October. I will say its fun being a tribe fan in yankee-land. How far up the cuyahoga does the Goodtime go? I can remember it going all the way up to the mills the last time I was on it. Go Tribe!

^Yes pope, right now the majority of our oil does not come from the Middle East, but the vast majority of proven oil reserves left in the ground lie in the Middle East. In an energy-hungry world, these reserves become very important going forward. As for Iran, you tell me what happens to the price of oil everywhere if/when we attack Iran and they don't roll over and play dead like the Iraqi military? Where we get our oil from right now is irrelevant to the price we are going to be paying for it; that's my point.
  12. Yes X, the "additional land" I would open up for development would be the existing Port Authority land west of the stadium once the PA relocates to Burke. Let Pesht encompass this land and fully bring it to it's potential. Don't build on the fringes of Burke right now just because you can. Resist the urge. Hold out and let the better plan happen. Why build a couple of bldgs around Burke that are disconnected from the rest of the city when they probably could've been located somewhere else? Do you have a compelling reason to locate businesses down there? Lets take a deep breath and look at the big picture. Let's leave that land available for development that makes sense next to an airport. ^Yes, surfohio, please see the thread on Bob Stark's proposed development in the warehouse district that would stretch all the way to the lakefront west of Browns Stadium, "Pesht". Burke has absolutely no chance of ever being residential (soil contamination) or a part of the downtown street grid.
  13. Ok, here's my dream playoff scenario: Beat New York in 1st rd Beat Boston in ALCS Beat New York (NL) in WS Seriously, could it be any better than that?! Thank you, Jesus. I'm ready for heaven! Thoughts?
  14. ^Amen. And the sooner the better.

I read somewhere, maybe TheOilDrum.com, that world oil production so far peaked in July of 2006. Everybody buckle up, it's gonna be a wild ride. Look for an attack on Iran soon.
  16. I jogged past the "Brothers Lounge" club at 116 and Detroit today and saw some guys working inside. I stopped to take a peek and saw the bar area was really coming together. I t looks like this place might be seeing some business this year.

^Yes, sadly, you are probably right. St. Colman, St. Stephen, St. Pat (OC) are in danger of being "downsized". What a loss, not just to the diocese, but whay happens to these irreplaceable bldgs? I have made it a point to make it to Mass at some of these older urban parishes before they are lost forever.
  18. Anyone else going to the game friday night? How many tix are sold so far? Is there anything sweeter than baseball in October?!
  19. nothings changed. not the music. the hair styles. the fashions. Nothing! except the cleve-scape. thats different. Speaking of the cleve-scape being different; (little story) the last time I was on the Goodtime was a field trip in 6th grade. My dad, who is a retired pipefitter, was running most of the sprinkler/pipe work at TC when it was being built in the late 80's. He knew that we were going to be passing by on the GT and said he would keep an eye out for us and wave. I've still got a pic of the front of TC in all it's structural steel glory. There's some ironworkers and assorted other tradesmen in the pic, but they're too small to identify. I'd like to think my dad's in the pic but I've got no way to tell. If I could figure out how to post it I would.
  20. I like your idea, but why attack those who are actually out there doing this thing with a non-sequiter like that? Just because some people think Burke would be a prime development opportunity doesn't make them short sighted or mean that they don't "grasp the whole 'density' thing". Where are you getting that? Ok, first off I'm going to apologize for hacking into y'all's computers and stealing this idea and passing it off as my own. But seriously, I've heard a member of the port authority board say firsthand that the above scenario is on their agenda and in the works. They (the PA) are very interested in moving their operations to land north and east of the aircraft operations. He also said that Cleveland is the frontrunner location for a ferry terminal (according to their Canadian counterparts). I've posted this info before. The port has been in the PD and Crain's discussing the possiblity of adding container freight to their operations. That would play right into the PA's potential move to Burke (flat, open space for container staging; highway access, rail access). A potential Amtrak/OhioHub lakefront station (KJP) would just add to the synergy of this site. This intermodal scenario isn't some pipe dream. X, What I was getting at was this: With all the vacant lots/property downtown and midtown why would the city look to develop commercial space adjacent to Burke? I could see this if a business came to the city and specifically wanted to be next to the airport...that's cool. In my view, anything developed on the fringes of Burke is cut off from downtown by the shoreway and could take space away from the transportation-oriented development that could and should be centered on that land. The open land along the lakefront, including Burke, shouldn't be developed just because it can. Let's examine the Rock Hall. It was a great addition to the city. It's a striking building, and it looks great in photos. It draws many thousands of out-of-towners to our city. It's great for marketing the city. But can anyone tell me why it's right on the water? What's near it? What development has it spun off down there? It's cut off from downtown by the shoreway and the RR tracks. Good luck walking down E9 to it in the winter/spring. My point is that just because it's a great idea or a good addition to the city doesn't mean it has to go down on the lakefront. It should have been built near TC or on Euclid ave in one of the many vacant bldgs. No city should be so desperate for development that it just lets anything be built anywhere, highest and best use be damned. We let that happen with the new Browns Stadium, but that's in another thread. X, I want the city to focus on developing the vacant land downtown before we start looking to develop the land around Burke. Keep building up the density and connectivity and synergy and all that crap downtown. Burke should be off-limits to anything but transport-oriented development. That's my position and I'm stickin to it. :-D
  21. The footer trenches for the next 2 townhomes at Rockport square have been dug. Expect more soon.
  22. Burke should become a state-of-the-art full intermodal transportation hub incorporating the airport, the port of Cleveland's relocation (with rail access and container handling capability), along with the proposed ferry terminal for vessels to Canada. There would be nothing like it anywhere and the port's relocation clears the lakefont west of CBS for Pesht. This also isn't taking into account the potential lakefront passenger rail station for the Ohio Hub plan. Any and all commercial development that is being talked about for Burke should be steered downtown. I've heard there's lots available? It is this kind of short-sightedness in planning by Cleveland politicos that makes me scratch my head. These people just can't seem to grasp the whole "density" thing. It can't be this simple, can it? Or am I just out there?! :?

No, the church they go to is either on W. 44th or W.41. St. Procop ring a bell? *I went to MC on Detroit for Mass one sunday and lo, it was the monthly Italian mass. I could only smile to myself as I sat there not understanding a word.
  24. In jonmoxon's perfect Cleveland, this is what ends up happening: The Medical Mart locates in the May Co. bldg, filling a HUGE gap on Euclid; this would also leave a lot of space in that bldg for possible mart expansion and/or medical equipmt sales ops/offices. The upper floors of Higbee's would then be converted to a luxury/flagship hotel connected to the new convention center through TC. 2 enormous, landmark spaces filled. It's just that simple, folks. :-D

As for this whole eastside v. westside thing, to me anything south of 480 is neither east nor west. I don't think of Indy, Parma, Maple Hts as east or west. They're just south of 480. I'm surprised he didn't live in the Italian neighborhood in/near Fulton and Clark. There was a streetcar line on Clark he could've taken to work. But maybe he was trying to save money by walking to the B&O yards. ^My fiance's grandparents (very much Italian, yes) still live in this neighborhood. They're a block from St. Rocco's; though they don't belong to that parish, which I've always found odd. The name of the parish they belong to in that hood escapes me.
