  1. Sounds like fun; I haven't been on the Goodtime since 6th grade. 1988?
  2. Sorry KJP, you nailed it; I misread your post.
  3. KJP has got it part right; from what I was told (I spent most of the summer of '05 working on the section of Deaconess that now houses Metro's back-office operations) the tower portion will be a senior-oriented health-care facility (just think of pretty much every medical specialty, but focused on seniors) that will also include some assisted-living space. All in all, a nice re-use of that space. I just wish my boss could've gotten the contract for the tower portion as well :-( That was a nice easy drive from Lakewood.
  4. I think a well-planned lakefront station would have incredible potential; especially once The FEB and Pesht are built-up. Imagine pulling into Cleveland in the future from the west, cruising right through the middle of those 2 neighborhoods, glimpsing the skyline, and either connecting to a ferry to Canada or catching the Waterfront line to TC for a convention or just a weekend in the city. I'm convinced the future of the existing CC is tied to a potential station on the lakefront. I'm repeating myself, but I believe the future economics of this nation will demand that this happen (and not just here). KJP, are there any other sites I can go to related to this (Besides OhioHub)? Are there renderings of a Cleveland station floating around in cyberspace somewhere? This topic and the potential of it just fascinates me.
  5. Those 2 scenarios you listed are incredibly intriguing. The possibility of bringing rail passenger service back to Tower City is just exciting, (while unrealistic, I know)to say the least. Combining that with the proposed CVSRR platform and existing RTA lines and you've got the makings of an incredibly lively transportation hub, (albeit with an enormous amount of $$ spent on infrastructure). The more realistic option is probably the lakefront site, especially if/when the CC goes to TC. Building a new, modern passenger station bridging the tracks and connected to the existing CC would provide the missing link to the lakefront and could spur transit-related development in the old CC. Connect this station to the proposed ferry terminal, and add a bus connection from the CC and you've got a serious intermodal passenger operation on your hands. Someday this will happen.
  6. Hey KJP, Maybe I missed this somewhere in this thread (I haven't read all 18 pages); where would the Cleveland station for the Cleve-Columbus-Cincy line be located? Would it be on the lakefront or somewhere in the flats? On a side note, could Tower City ever handle inter-city rail traffic again in the future (assuming huge infrastructure investments) or has that train left the station (pun intended)? I often wonder what it would look like and/or how it could work in the future. Just curious.
  7. I drove by it saturday and it looked like some backfilling against the foundation had been done; the dozer was parked out front. I'm kind of curious as to what the slowdown/stoppage is all about also.

Hey Pope, When I lived in Tremont, my buddy and I had a 2-br in the Chelsea bldg on W. 14th st, just south of La Tortilla Feliz(adjacent to 490). It was $650 and included utilities. It also had its own parking lot behind the bldg. I believe the owner was "Primo" properties or something like that. Good luck with the search.
  9. I'm planning on taking the lady to Zocalo tonight; I'm a huge Mexican fan and was really excited when this place was announced. After hearing some of the reviews, I'm a little gun-shy. Maybe we'll just grab a drink there. Look for my report tommorrow. Go Canes! Beat the Sooners!
  10. I'm in complete agreement here (and with X). A project on this site would not only kill any chance of Pesht making it to the waterfront, it would be another misguided attempt by the city to build for tourists, and not its own residents. A CC here would complete the wall stretching from Burke along the lake to the river. You'd have the 9th st. pier and Voinovich Park for real public access. Every other place you'd have to pay to enter: Rock Hall, GLSC, Browns Stadium, the CC. Where's the street-level retail? Where's the residential? Where's the port? And as nice as the renderings for that building look, the last thing we need is the last, best piece of waterfont land taken up and used for a monstrous, non-public building surrounded by useless, decorative "greenspace". Thankfully, the time it would take the port to move makes this site a non-starter. Concerning sites within UC, the only site that really jumps out at me is the proposed "west quad" space case was going to partner with FCE on. Pushing aside the issues of highest and best use, connectivity, development spin-off and all that jazz; where does all that potential truck traffic into and out of UC get routed from the interstates? I don't think this baby goes to UC. It's between TC and the existing CC site. I support the TC site; but I'd really like to see a better design for that bldg before I sign off on it. :-D
  11. Back to Rockport Square; all 3 townhomes on Ridgewood are sold and nearing completion. I could see the foundations of the homes to be built on Detroit are staked out. Gonna be some more diggin soon.
  12. On a side note, there's also the Sapell's Bi Rite on 117th street. Does anyone on here shop there?
  13. I remember reading a while back (Crain's?) that a Molly Branigan's Irish Pub was locating in Playhouse Square. I've been to the MB's in Erie, Pa and was intrigued to see them coming to Cleveland. The guy who owns the Erie location is a native of Ireland and did an awesome job restoring an old storefront in downtown Erie into an authentic-looking (lots of wood) Irish pub/eatery. Anyone hear anything regarding this development? I think it would be a great addition to Playhouse Square.

Hmm, I guess that would be the case. Ok, you have my permission. :-D
  15. Don't get me started on Wal-mart, fellas. Or, as my dad likes to call it, "The Chinese Army Factory Outlet Store". I love that. Shop at Target instead.

yes, yes; keep the predictions somehow. Let the merging begin.
  17. Welcome Spamhead! I live on Winchester and today I noticed a large increase in trucks parked on the site of the south loft bldg. Looks to me they're seriously prepping the site for some diggin soon. I'm very anxious to see how this part of the project turns out. Also noticed a "sold" sign on the northernmost townhome on ridgewood; couldn't see if there were any others.
  18. Any word on a Zocala opening yet? I'm dying to try that place out.

^You nailed it, Brewmaster. However, let's check back in a month or so and see what hurricane season has done to our beloved refinery capacity. That, and continuing shenanigans in the Middle East/West Africa can change this in a real hurry. **It's these continual price swings that have allowed the U.S. consumer to continue believing it's oil company collusion and not the fundamental supply/demand problem that it is. Oil/gas prices need to go up and stay there if we are going to see any real change in our attitudes and behavior, along with our govt's and industry. In short, enjoy the lower prices now because they aren't going to stay long.
  20. ^I should've added that I would focus almost exclusively on the projects that would act as catalysts for more development, and avoid (for the most part) single, stand-alone projects; I would leave those to other private developers. that's why I resisted listing Scranton Peninsula development, though I would strongly support a light-rail line through SP connected to the West Bank, and ultimately to the Waterfont line and Tower City. *The Cleveland-Lorain Rail Project Man, there's so much to list! Again, I'll stop here.
  21. This is a neat topic, something I think about all the time. I'll throw out a few off the top of my head: #1 Buy Lakeview Terrace from CMHA and tear it down. Next week. #2 The ECP would become a light-rail line. I would run a spur up E. 18th st. north and connect it with the waterfront line and form our own 'loop'. #3 Cleveland Browns Stadium would get a retractable roof so we could land a final 4 and super bowl. #4 If I had any cash left, I would fund the placement of the remaining hulett ore unloader next to the Mather and.... #5 Get the last leg of the Towpath Trail finished into downtown. Honorable Mention: *Fixing up the beautiful B&O freight terminal in the flats *A fund to help inner-city/inner-ring Catholic schools survive *A football stadium for CSU (and a MAC-level FB program) *Getting some more cops hired and targeted at problem areas I'll stop there..... :-D
  22. Great post, urban manna! I'm ready to start building this thing right now. After all the info that has been presented, I don't see how anyone could be against the move to bring the MM here; I do recognize the debate between building the CC behind TC or renovating the existing one. I favor a new CC behind TC, though I acknowledge the opposing viewpoint has benefits, too. A decision needs to be reached on this, and I think we know where it's going to go.

I've seen multiple HS playoff games at the Rubber Bowl, and I'll tell that place is nothing special. The new digs on campus will be a huge improvement, and I would look forward to seeing a game there.
