I think this is true, especially because the NHL has really overextended itself with expansions (IMO). I seem to recall that both the Blue Jackets and Crew located in Columbus to try to draw statewide support. I think there's been a little of that, but not much, because of surfohio's point. Cleveland-Akron-Canton is on par with (or larger) than many NHL metros, but it would just barely nudge ahead of Denver for second-to-last among "Grand Slam" (NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL) metros. I feel like we're not quite large enough and too close to other similarly-sized metros to be able to pull an NHL team, unless they really push for expansion again or either the Penguins or Blue Jackets move. Regardless, I enjoy the Monsters and am glad we have pro-hockey in some capacity in Cleveland. We're consistently among the best-attended teams, and we should be proud of that and try to build off of it as much as we can.
  2. It's the vacant lot at the corner of College and Thurman. The appeal says that it's a consolidated parcel, so I assume that the lot is composed of a parcel with a College Avenue address and a parcel with a Thurman Street address.
  3. I'm assuming you're addressing me. I'm sure you do your best, but if every service interruption were announced like this or in some other very obvious way, I wouldn't have brought it up. I appreciate your participation on this forum, Jerry, but this rejoinder was rather unnecessary and disrespectful. I'm only attempting to discuss what I see as a legitimate area for improvement. Please don't dismiss public input, especially from someone who rides RTA daily and defends your organization from a lot of uninformed criticism.
  4. I would say it actually is more expansive than a text-message system that people have to proactively sign up for. Why would anyone expect notifications via text or website if there weren't unusual circumstances? Several times this winter there have been rail service interruptions because of heavy snowfall, and that information was not available on the website. I'm sure I'm not the only one to check road or transit conditions when there's severe weather. The only difference is that every news station in the area posts and broadcasts traffic updates, and RTA commuters are expected to rely on the commuter alerts. Different types of service interruptions are probably most efficiently announced via different media, but why do you think there shouldn't be a central up-to-date web location where that information can be accessed? By the way, I'm not saying there's no use for the commuter alert system. I'm subscribed to it, and while it's very imperfect, it helps. I just think that the website could be much better used to disseminate information to riders. And I was just pointing out that it's unfair for you to make assumptions about someone else's finances. And smartphones aren't the only devices that can access the internet. I'm assuming gildone has a computer, since s/he is a regular poster on UO.
  5. Let's not presume to tell anyone else how to manage their finances. I think the Commuter Alerts program is great, but the fact remains that the single best medium for disseminating information about service interruptions to the widest possible audience (the website) has historically been underused for that purpose. I'm glad that RTA is working to redesign their website, and I sincerely hope that this is something the development team is taking into consideration.

Fwiw, they are owned by a Los Angeles-based parking lot company that tried to demolish them a year or two ago for surface parking. MRN has tried to buy at least one of the buildings, but the current owners wouldn't sell.
  7. It is a bit confusing. What is now once again Ohio Savings Bank used to be called Amtrust Bank and occupied (or maybe still occupies) the building on the east side of the 9th Street b/w Walnut and Chester. That building had big "Amtrust Bank" signage on it-- not sure if it still does though. Amtrust Financial, which is the company moving a 1000 jobs into the old Key Investment Center, or whatever it's called, is a New York-based insurance company that I believe is completely unaffiliated with what was once Amtrust Bank. So these are totally new jobs to the region, not a relocation within downtown. This is right (mostly). The only slight correction is that Amtrust Financial currently has some employees in Independence who will be moving downtown. I forget the exact numbers, but at least several hundred jobs will be new.
  8. You could try contacting the city councilman for the ward, or just taking it down yourself.
  9. Is there any reason to think that it would? The east side lost 22.3% of its population between 2000 and 2010, and the west side lost 9.5% (only slightly higher than the county average.) Not that an almost 10% loss isn't sobering, but I don't think the situation on the west side is really comparable, for a lot of reasons. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/03/clevelands_shifting_population.html
  10. Whew, glad I'm not crazy ;-) I tried finding something online to confirm, but I couldn't
  11. Why would you account for mileage? A butt in a seat (wear and tear) is a butt in a seat, regardless of how far it travels. A more meaningful metric might be average number of riders per available seat over the course of the day.
  12. IIRC, the Marriott was built to be able to support future vertical expansion.
  13. Yes that was the case as well. Although I thought it was a surgion from the Clinic.. Ill be next door this weekend and will find out! I thought I remembered reading that the builder just wanted to build a contemporary home knowing someone would buy it. It had a for sale sign for quite some time and only has been occupied within the last 2 weeks. The name Perse does sound familiar though. No, it's been occupied since this fall. The sign outside was a building company's sign.
  14. Isn't there already a parking lot in that spot?
  15. It's probably a tie between Walz, at W. 80 and Detroit, or Eastman, at W. 117 and Lorain. A library would be fantastic for the neighborhood, but I wonder if CPL would have the resources for it.
  16. Which is why I put the word "losing" in quotation marks. But thanks for the math lesson! ;-)
  17. Must... stuff... thoughts... back into the box... (But seriously, I like that idea.) A lot of people like the all-day passes for getting around the city, so I think that has the potential to be very popular. I wonder if the city and RTA willing to split the small hit in revenues (since parking at the Muni Lot is currently $3 a day, and an all-day pass is $5.) Maybe the city could get $2 of the 6 and RTA could get $4, so they're each only "losing" $1.
  18. Marcia Fudge ran unopposed.
  19. Thanks for the tips! From some casual internet research on Milwaukee, I was planning on focusing on the area from Marquette to the Lake, and from just north to just south of downtown. Not sure how walkable that's going to be, but I guess I'll find out :-P As far as Madison goes, I guess I'll just start downtown and wander around from there.
  20. Hi everyone! Lopsidedfrock and I are making a short-notice trip to Milwaukee and Madison, WI this weekend through the beginning of next week. We're staying with friends in Chicago, then spending a day in each city Monday and Tuesday. I was just wondering if anyone had advice on neighborhoods to see, specific restaurants or shops to check out, etc. Neither of us have ever been there, so we're counting on some good urbanist advice :-D
  21. Which is exactly why Edgewater should have its own CDC, instead of being lumped into Cudell's.
  22. If FCE wants to see a larger residential population, maybe they should put their money where their mouth is and build a couple residential towers... Like maybe a City of Towers like this- http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,13775.msg208808.html#msg208808 I also don't know that DCA is still pursuing the outlet store plan for Lower Euclid, just from conversations that I've had with certain people in that organization. Maybe I should ask explicitly
  23. Holy St. Paddy's day, Batman!
  24. There is a commuter alert service you can sign up for (which sent out multiple messages yesterday,) and they had a notification scrolling on the homepage of the website. There wasn't (and isn't) anything in the "Rider's Alerts" section when you click "Important information," though.
  25. Red line service has been a disaster this whole week. A westbound train broke down on Monday or Tuesday, service east of Tower City was shut down after 2 pm yesterday, and the morning eastbound trains have been late all week.
