Not sure if it's been posted on UO yet, but ODOT is going to be working on the Abbey Ave. bridge over the next four months, which is going to make biking from Tremont to downtown a real pain.
  2. One of the proposals in the Transformation Plan is a move to year-round schooling (four ten-week sessions separated by two-week vacations.) I've been to three of the public meetings that have been held so far, but I'm still unclear if year-round schooling is going to be an option for some schools or if it's intended to be applied to the whole district. Both the mayor and superintendent did stress that their intention is to eliminate "summer loss" and help students catch up by effectively adding a month to the school year, as well as help out working parents who might worry about finding supervision for their kids for two and a half or three months.

No, they've actually given up on that idea, and the building has been for sale for some time now.
  4. I would imagine that if any repaving or re-striping is in the works, it would wait until heavy construction machinery is no longer rolling around on the streets and sidewalks.
  5. That is something that has been proposed and worked on, but it hasn't gone anywhere in the three years or so I've been involved with it.
  6. The shopping center? Yes. They're making a killing down there. If you mean the Steelyard Best Buy specifically, I've been in there a few times and it wasn't all that busy, but I've had the same problems as DocBroc with not being able to find what I needed, so I can see why it would be a less-trafficked location.
  7. Do you know her personally? I agree that the concept is trashy and degrading, but can we please not say things like this about individuals?

  9. Are you saying you think that's a recent picture? It has to be pre mid-eighties, since 200 Public Square isn't visible. I was trying to look at the cars to get a better idea, but it's hard to tell. I would guess it's from the fifties or sixties.
  10. Well, the wavy things are only vaguely evocative of DNA, imo. But if that's what they were going for, the windows kind of remind me of gels: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gel_electrophoresis

Where is the location in Lakewood? Do you mean the one on Clifton? That's in Cleveland.

  13. This is the heart of the issue, but somehow, most people don't get it. There is wayyyy too much emphasis placed on the role of the district and the teachers on student performance. They certainly do have an impact, but they're not as big as most people seem to think. I totally understand why Jackson is doing this, though. The biggest single factor that keeps families fleeing for the suburbs is the school district, and people want "accountability" from the leadership. I think his heart is in the right place, and I agree with some of the proposed ideas (year-round school, flexible hours, even the boarding schools.) To the extent that the district can mitigate the influence of a poor home environment, those are impactful ideas. I'm really interested in hearing more of your thoughts on this (if you feel like typing that much!)
  14. Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson proposes sweeping plan to improve education for city students Published: Tuesday, February 07, 2012, 6:00 AM Updated: Tuesday, February 07, 2012, 6:02 AM By Patrick O'Donnell, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Mayor Frank Jackson hopes to triple the number of Cleveland students attending good schools by throwing out union rules governing teacher pay and layoffs, partnering more with high-performing charter schools and giving successful district schools more flexibility in how they do their jobs. Jackson's plan (pdf), presented to teachers, city council and local legislators Monday night, also calls for changes in state law that would apply only to Cleveland and for Cleveland voters to approve a tax increase in November. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2012/02/cleveland_mayor_frank_jackson_26.html Link to pdf: http://media.cleveland.com/metro/other/ClevelandPlanFinal.pdf
  15. This is correct. There have been some changes since I was a student, but from what I understand, the district still sends out a mailing at the end of the school year saying, "this is the school you're guaranteed a spot in next year (usually a neighborhood school, unless you're in a gifted program or something similar,) but you can enter a lottery to take a spot at another school of your choice."
  16. But what about Riverside, Louisa May Alcott, School of the Arts, or John Hay? What I see time and again on this board is a district with 50,000 students and 120 schools talked about as if it were some uniform entity, when it's really extremely heterogeneous. There may be problems in the district OVERALL that an influx of families that value education and put time and effort into the home side won't cure, but let's be honest, if you're living in Ohio City, you're not gonna send your kid to Patrick Henry. It's about building quality schools in our quality neighborhoods. I think you're giving too much credit to schools themselves for academic achievement. Sad as it is, it's really more about the demographics of the students than anything.

  20. There's a strong chance that any redevelopment would try to use historic preservation tax credits as part of the financing package, and I suspect the powers that grant such credits would frown on changing that side of the building in a significant way.

There's also a police museum at the justice center. As long as the weather's nice, the zoo is a totally different experience in the winter than in the summer. A lot of these are kind of standard suggestions, but I don't know what they've done before, or recently. They may be a little cliché, but there's the RRHoF and the Christmas Story house, if they haven't been to those. The markets in Asia Town are pretty cool to visit. They could make a night out of a visit to Detroit-Shoreway with the little boutiques, numerous places for dinner, Sweet Moses, and a movie at the Capitol. Same goes for Ohio City. They could visit the market and a couple shops on W. 25, then take a walk down Bridge Avenue and have a romantic dinner au Petit Triangle. They could probably spend an afternoon on Waterloo Rd. in Collinwood, or on Larchmere. Does anyone know if Wendy Park is open this time of year? Whiskey Island is kind of a neat place, but I've only ever been in the summer.
