Moving to Shaker Square
A good friend of mine lives in the Lakemore building (which is a montlackrealty.com building,) and I've spent quite a bit of time there. His only complaints about it are that the annual rent increases have gotten to the point where he thinks he could get more bang for his buck elsewhere. He's lived in the building for about five years, I think, or maybe a bit more.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
I don't think "see, I told you so!" is very productive in this discussion. I want to know where the council people in these areas are, and why there isn't more speaking out. Both Sweeney and Westbrook have been on Council for a very long time, and it's arguable that these neighborhoods have slipped under their watch. Even though you can't prevent criminals from moving into a certain area, I still feel like there are things that could be done to discourage crime and retain the middle class residents that keep neighborhoods like Edgewater and West Park stable. Edit: Sorry, that came across as more accusatory than I meant it to be.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
The unemployment rates for those other cities are the October rates, so they should be compared to Cleveland's October rate of 7.1%. Not sure how or why they've released Cleveland's November data before those other places. It's notable that 6.9% is the lowest unemployment the Cleveland MSA has seen since November 2008, and our labor force is only 2,500 people smaller now than it was then.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
I believe this is near the site of the St. Luke's Hospital redevelopment. Cleveland police find gunshot victim's body on East Side Published: Sunday, December 25, 2011, 12:23 PM Updated: Monday, December 26, 2011, 12:27 PM By Stan Donaldson, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio - Police discovered the body of an unidentified man Saturday night on the city's East Side. The man, who had been shot in the head, was found in an abandoned home in the 10900 block of Hulda Avenue shortly after 9 p.m. Police officers in the Fourth District were flagged down by witnesses who told them they found a man bleeding in the house. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/12/cleveland_police_find_gunshot.html

Cleveland: Midtown: Development and News
While it's certainly important to talk to neighborhood stakeholders, it's also important to look at the larger picture. Midtown has a master plan for Euclid, and a business incubator fits that plan. I would guess that stakeholders in Midtown as a whole would support that use, and WHRS would be in the minority if they oppose it. Their opinion should certainly be taken into account, but at the risk of NIMBYism stymieing development along the entire corridor, theirs shouldn't be the only voice we listen to.

Cleveland: Downtown: Cleveland Arcade
It's been done in the Colonial and Euclid Arcades, so it seems to be possible. I also believe some walls were taken out to put in the post office on the ground level in the Old Arcade. This is an idea that's been explored over the past year by several members of the DCA City Advocate program. I don't know that they've met much success, and the problem seems to be that businesses are still leery of downtown as a retail location. That's a conversation for a different thread, though. Perhaps Skyline International can come up with something creative for marketing the Arcade specifically (maybe by pointing out that E. 4 is literally across the street?)

Cleveland: Downtown: Cleveland Arcade
A major challenge for all of the arcades in downtown CLE is the small size of the storefronts. It's going to be interesting to see what kind of tenant mix Skyline International can attract to the Arcade.

Cleveland: Marketing the City
I think that compared to a lot of other cities, especially on the East Coast, Cleveland has a ton of trees. Maybe no forests per se, but pretty much every residential street has a treelawn (with mature trees, fittingly enough.)

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
First, crime reports from the past 7 or 30 days do not necessarily indicate a new trend. Long-term statistics are meaningful. Second, a lot of crime goes unreported, especially in neighborhoods where the residents feel neglected or antagonized by the police. A few weeks ago, there was a sticker that somebody put up in the University Circle rapid station saying something to the effect of "Police, stay out! We can handle our own problems."

Cleveland: Cell Phone Service
I think Verizon has the best coverage. I have Sprint, which is ok for the most part, but there are spots that give me trouble.

Yeah, there's a Staples.

Student group trip to Cleveland - suggestions?
However, letting them loose on W. 25th/Market Avenue would be a good idea for lunch. There are lots of inexpensive-type places, and a variety of cuisines (Cambodian, Turkish, generic Middle Eastern, "Mexican" (OC Burrito,) southern, that new sandwich place by Old Angle...) Lucky's for breakfast might be out of the price range of the students. It's good, but I don't know that they'll want or be able to drop $15 on a plate of corned beef hash.

Cleveland: Shoreway Boulevard Conversion
I was at the public meeting last week, and this point (along with the fact that reducing the speed limit from 50 to 35 adds 75 seconds from Lake/Clifton to downtown) was what finally convinced me that the boulevard conversion per se wouldn't cause a dramatic problem for commuting. It also convinced me that the original plan to add intersections with stoplights wasn't that big of a deal, either. There were only like four or five intersections planned, and even if you were to hit every light, the trip would be much less impeded than the current trip down Detroit with a gazillion lights and narrower ROW. Basically, we'd be trading a freeway (which may have been needed in the 40s or 50s, when the Shoreway was built as such,) for an expressway (even with the lights.) EDIT: I see KJP made the same basic point in his post.

CURRENT Tremont Reviews/Thoughts please!
I love living in Tremont. I definitely think the area is still trending up, and I've lived in various parts of the neighborhood for over three years. It's very safe (safer than Ohio City or Detroit-Shoreway,) and I love how many little businesses have started up over the past few years and are becoming established. With that said, however, I do most of my hanging out in those two other neighborhoods (and Downtown.) The Tremont crowd tends to be a little older than my demographic (mid-twenties,) so while I'm not looking for some pukefest W. 6th frat party (no disrespeck!,) I find myself using my apartment as a nice home base from where I can easily bike, walk, or take transit to places like ABC or Happy Dog that are more popular with people my age.

Cleveland/Oberlin - Possible Relocation?
Here's a place on Clifton Boulevard. The third floor unit is the one that's available. http://clv-lofts.com/11015%20Clifton_properties.html I think there are also units available in the National Terminal Warehouse building downtown: http://www.showmetherent.rentlinx.com/Property.aspx?PropertyID=160660

CLEVELAND: What one "speculative" project would you like to see built?
I'd totally forgotten about that! I agree that this could be a real game-changer. Historically, logistics has been what's led to the growth of cities, and a diverse collection of businesses based around shipping and national/international trade would be awesome. That does, of course, suppose that air shipping will remain economically viable as petroleum resources dwindle, so that's the real gamble IMO (and a topic for another thread.)

Cleveland / Lakewood: The Edge Developments
Sapell's is a glorified liquor store. I think an expanded Constantino's would suit the needs of the neighborhood well, though. The space they're currently in could go back to being a Convenient or whatever it was a long time ago, which would be more appropriate for a building of that size.

This is exciting to me. I believe L&R wanted to tear down their buildings on Prospect for more parking a while back. Hopefully, MRN can pick them up and spread a little E. 4th down that way instead.
