  2. ^ Frame houses are certainly the norm in Cleveland, but small rows of townhouses like that are found scattered throughout the city. Locally, they're often called "terrace houses." Here's a few examples from the top of my head: West Boulevard W. 65th Detroit Avenue Chester Avenue Kenilworth Avenue (not a great view) Franklin Boulevard

I like the paczkis from Kiedrowski's in Amherst, and there's a place in Parma that has good ones too. The name's escaping me now, but maybe I'll think of it later.
  4. Czuchraj also makes beef jerky that is out of this world.
  5. There are good neighborhood schools in the Cleveland district. If you must be in a system where every single school is a high performer, CMSD isn't for you. The district really needs to do a better job of advertising which schools are being rated "excellent" or "effective" while continuing to address the issues at under-performing schools. To illustrate what I'm talking about, look at this story posted above: I know a woman who was part of the research team at CSU that did this study. She wrote her PhD thesis on how the quality of neighborhood schools affects whether middle class families choose to remain in that neighborhood. She was also unaware that Tremont Montessori was rated "excellent" by the state last year. I blame the district for that.
  6. I was just giving my opinion, and I appreciate you giving your insight. No need to be a dick about it.
  7. ^^ Really? 50 jobs and a little cash for 10 years worth of purchasing, and GE doesn't even make the product that the City wants? Doesn't sound that solid to me. I'm actually kind of glad that they aren't setting a precedent for letting a company write its own terms for a long-term contract. I do agree that LED lighting might not be the best product for our needs right now, though.
  8. ^Actually, according to Forbes magazine, it's already dead. Thanks for dragging this thread up again, though. It really is one of my "hall of fame" favorites that anyone's ever put together on this site.

Are all the street signs in orange on black? That's probably the most unusual color scheme I've ever seen.
  10. ^ Beachwood.
  11. If taxes really are such a big deal to them, I hope AG takes note of this when considering those two Chicago locations: Illinois legislators increase state's income tax from 3 to 5 percent to counter huge budget deficit Published: Wednesday, January 12, 2011, 2:44 AM Updated: Wednesday, January 12, 2011, 2:52 AM By Associated Press Deanna Bellandi / Associated Press SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Democrats in the Illinois Legislature early today approved a 66 percent income-tax increase in a desperate and politically risky effort to end the state's crippling budget crisis. The increase now goes to Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn, who supports the plan to temporarily raise the personal tax rate to 5 percent, a two-thirds increase from the current 3 percent rate. Corporate taxes also would climb as part of the effort to close a budget hole that could hit $15 billion this year. http://www.cleveland.com/nation/index.ssf/2011/01/illinois_legislators_increase.html
  12. IIRC, the buildings you're asking about are owned by a California parking company. They applied for a demolition permit for the easternmost building in that row a while back, but it was denied. I know MRN has tried to acquire all of those buildings, but they weren't able to.
  13. There was a story in the Scene about the hostel a month or so ago: http://m.clevescene.com/gyrobase/hostel-fire/Content?oid=2216133
  14. I like 806 in Tremont for that kind of atmosphere.
  15. At least on a city level, I don't think that taxes are the biggest barrier to getting companies to locate in Cleveland. In my opinion, cutting red tape and streamlining the various permitting processes would do a lot more.
  16. ^ Why do you attribute all the loss to Northeast Ohio? Last I heard, Southeast, Northwest, and Southwest Ohio weren't exactly booming either. You're also assuming that most Northeast Ohioans that are leaving are leaving the state entirely. I have much less faith in the local estimates than state estimates. There's a significantly larger margin of error on the city level, especially considering Cleveland's demographics (over 50% minority, large numbers of unemployed people who are probably not filing tax returns, etc.)
  17. Does anyone have a photo of the Leader Building in Cleveland? Here's a streetview- http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=e.+6th+and+superior+avenue,+cleveland&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=41.632176,57.480469&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Superior+Ave+E+%26+E+6th+St,+Cleveland,+Cuyahoga,+Ohio+44114&ll=41.500478,-81.68895&spn=0.009642,0.014033&z=16&layer=c&cbll=41.501381,-81.690321&panoid=wa7g8ShlPESG569_n_oSKQ&cbp=12,185.78,,0,-14.44
  18. I'm sorry, I posted it because I thought it was a funny comment. I didn't mean for people to get bent out of shape.
  19. This comment was priceless: "you should do it in a mall or sams club! or where there are more than 12 people! sounds great! and more should be able to enjoy it!"
  20. The DEA puts out a list of known addresses where meth has been manufactured. Not sure about where people buy or use it the most, but on the production side, Akron is king in Ohio by far. Akron aside, rural counties do appear to produce more than urban counties. http://www.justice.gov/dea/seizures/oh.pdf
  21. ^ Check out Downtown, Detroit-Shoreway, Edgewater, Asiatown, University Circle, and/or Little Italy, too!
  22. ^ There's been quite a bit of interior demolition and other work on the Schofield, too, not just the façade removal. McCleveland mentioned it a while back, I believe.
  23. ^ Nope, Near West is currently in Ohio City, but they're moving to Gordon Square.
  24. ^ The NYT map is pretty neat. I like the census tract-level break down. Looking Cleveland on that map, it's amazing how integrated the west side is.

^ Yeah, they had a guy running for county executive (David Ellison.)
