  1. ^ I don't think so... In one or two of them, they implied they had a gun in some way, but I don't think one ever appeared.
  2. ^The Hotel Cleveland was built in 1918, before the rest of the complex. The Van Sweringens acquired it, and at one point considered replacing it, before connecting it to the rest of the Union Terminal complex.
  3. Ha, if that's indeed where it's going, that means that Akron-based companies are in both of the 515 Euclid storefronts.
  4. ^ Yeah, there was an article or two about it in the PD earlier this summer. I'm not sure if the Cin. zoo does the same thing, but the Cle. Zoo is free on Mondays for Cuyahoga county residents, and that was the major reason they thought attendance was up so much.
  5. From the Richmond, VA article: "The company said it initially had wanted to buy Northrop's shipyard in Avondale, La, but has expanded the offer to buy the entire division. Northrop Grumman said in July that it was studying options for its shipbuilding unit that includes a possible sale or spinoff." http://www2.timesdispatch.com/news/2010/oct/04/shiupgat04-ar-541535/
  6. ^ This sounds really exciting to me, if they can pull it off!
  7. ^ Interesting... Could you please elaborate a little?
  8. I got one at the RTA table at the Tall Ships Festival this past summer, but I've never seen them at any of the rapid stations (including Tower City) or on buses. There is a large system map posted at Tower City, but it's outside the turnstiles, and like I said, I haven't seen any available for the taking.
  9. Cool, thanks for looking that up!
  10. ^I wonder exactly how much they'll be taking, because last I heard, the building was about 85% occupied. Cliffs took two floors a year or so ago, so who moved/is moving out?
  11. ^ A lot more of this region is troubled than just the city.
  12. I was going to say something to that effect. You can see the same thing in the Pittsburgh map.
  13. Here's a three-part video on Detroit that a friend sent me. I couldn't decide exactly where to put this, but I figured this would be as good a spot as any since it shows a lot of different ways buildings and vacant land in Detroit are being reused. I see a lot of parallels between the grass-roots urban farming and artist communities they highlight in these videos and what we have going on in Cleveland, but I guess I never realized the scale they have to work on there. The abandoned neighborhood-turned-outdoor art installation (in part 3) was so cool, but so creepy at the same time. http://www.palladiumboots.com/exploration/detroit It does kind of sadden me that it took Johnny Knoxville to make this!

Are they at the point where they can obtain a bridge loan? Or would that not apply to this type of project?
  15. Look at the map. http://www.riderta.com/pdf/81.pdf The bus doesn't serve all parts of the route at all times and all days. When the bus doesn't serve the stop at Starkweather and W. 7 (that is, weeknights after seven and on weekends) it bypasses the gray loop and continues along the white part of the route. During those days/hours, you'll look to the stops before or after that the bus DOES serve. The short answer is that the bus will always pass by your stop at Tremont and Jefferson. If you need more help, feel free to PM me.
  16. The 81 is 24 hour all the time. Your stop is between W. 7-Starkweather and Quigley-Steelyard, so your bus should come between the times listed for those two stops. Pay attention to the direction of travel, though, so you can be out there a little early.
  17. ^ I'm not sure that RTA has ever explicitly taken credit for any of these projects. As far as I know, they've only ever made statements along the lines of "$X billion in planned construction is occurring along the route," which lets people draw their own conclusions. It's pretty clear that RTA has had little impact on the Clinic's expansion plans, but I'd definitely attribute interest in many or most of the smaller projects along the route to the project.
  18. For the love of Vishnu, can we pleeeeease try to stay on topic?
  19. And our MSA has continually gained population, even through the most recent census (2000.) Why are we wringing our hands about *estimated* population loss, anyway? The 1999 census estimate overestimated Cleveland's population by 23,000 people and underestimated Marion County, Indiana by 50,000. Who knows what the actual numbers are? Let's all take a deep breath and wait till March or whenever they release the official figures before we conclude that the sky is falling.
  20. *cracks knuckles* (sorry, I live car-free, so I love these questions :) ) ^ RTA has good rapid transit service to University Circle and Shaker Square. Coventry and Cedar Fairmount would both be good uphill hikes from the redline E. 120 and University Circle stations, respectively. Cedar and Lee is an even bigger hike. The no. 32 bus does run down Cedar, but if you're going to a late movie at the Cedar Lee Theater, fuggedaboudit. ;) Parking is a little easier in Detroit-Shoreway than Tremont (there are a few free lots owned by the DSDCO and plenty of side streets,) but if you choose to take public transit, the no. 26 bus is frequent, and runs 24 hours a day. I'm not a yoga person, but I love the name of the "There's no Place Like Om" yoga studio on W. 54 and Detroit. Can't comment on the studio itself, but I do chuckle every time I see the place.
  21. We have a thread for this: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,10151.0.html
  22. That is hilarious.
  23. Once you're comfortable with Tremont, I'd definitely recommend getting to know the Gordon Square area of Detroit-Shoreway. If you like coffee shops, Gypsy Bean is a great location, and there's a lot of live theater action going on over there with Cleveland Public Theater, and the soon-to-be-relocated Near West Theater. The Capitol Theater (movie theater) has some neat stuff going on: http://www.clevelandcinemas.com/cinemadrilldown.asp?intCin=2941 Happy Dog, while not actually in Gordon Square, is very close-by.
  24. ^By law, the President will have them on his desk by Dec. 31, and the states will have their redistricting data by March. I assume the numbers will be publicly available sometime around then.
