Cleveland: HealthLine / Euclid Corridor
I feel ya... I once said something to a guy who had the gall to throw a handful of used napkins and a brown paper bag full of chicken bones out the door of the bus onto the ground... He told me I needed to get "schooled in the hood." All the littering around bus stops (especially on Public Square) bothers me, but what gets me worse is all the spitting... :x Not only is it gross, but it's unsanitary, too! I've often thought it would be great to have transit cops or even CPD walking beats to help curb this stuff. Unfortunately, I think it's probably more a matter of prioritizing the distribution of limited resources than anything else, particularly in an area as big as the Euclid Corridor.

Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
I'm sorry, I thought the smiley and the phrase "in all seriousness" made it clear I wasn't being serious. That was intended as a wry remark on a sentiment I often encountered when I lived in Westlake. I do, however, appreciate your efforts to correct my foolishness.  8-) :-D (hope that's enough smilies this time!)

Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
I thought this stuff only happened in big, scary Cleveland... In all seriousness, though, this is crazy. Westlake man stabbed by 12-year-old boy By Michael Sangiacomo September 26, 2009, 8:04AM ... Westlake Police said the man, whose name was not released, approached two young boys shooting air pistols in a wooded area near Dover Center and Center Ridge roads around 7 p.m.. Police said when the man confronted the boys about the shooting, one of them stabbed him in the chest with a pocket knife. ... http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2009/09/westlake_man_stabbed_by_12-yea.html

NY Times hearts Cleveland... again
Columbus, OH does it too, IIRC. While it would be a neat thing for Ingenuity, I just have to wonder exactly how he'd pull it off. In Providence, the fires are little piles of wood stacked in these metal baskets anchored to the "river" bottom (it's actually a very long, very narrow inlet of the Narragansett Bay,) which is only like 4' deep and not used by the kind of boats that we have plying the Cuyahoga. They do, however, have gondolas, which are pretty cool.

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
There are certainly still job losses (in spite of the diversity) that factor in, but I have a feeling that the 2010 census numbers will be higher than many are anticipating. The MSA grew from 1990-2000, while the city only lost 5% and the county lost 1% of their respective populations. While we definitely haven't seen a ton of growth, I don't think the losses have been all that steep.

KC coming to Cleveland
I second the recommendation for the Great Lakes Brewing Company in Ohio City (off of W. 25, around the corner from both Bier Markt and the West Side Market.) http://www.greatlakesbrewing.com/ As far as Mexican/Spanish food downtown, there's Zocalo on E. 4 and Mallorca (a bit pricier.) http://www.zocalocleveland.com/ and http://www.clevelandmallorca.com/ Can't really comment on the authenticity, but I've liked the food at both places.

Info on relocating to Cleveland area
Sounds like you're describing Tremont to me! (Edit to add: or Larchmere Boulevard on the Cleveland/Shaker Heights border, though the housing stock is older in Tremont and the latter has a more "serene" feel to me.) Where will you and your husband be working, though? To me, that's the most important consideration at the moment, because you'll be able to find neighborhoods or suburbs that you like on both sides of the city, so your work situation might help us guide your search. Something else to consider is that you can always rent someplace for a year or so while you look for your perfect house, and then buy once you get to know the area. Perhaps live someplace closer to work at first, and then make a decision about a place to raise your family once you and your husband get to that point.

Cleveland - relocation and crossing the lines....
There is also a dog park in Tremont: http://www.dogparkusa.com/ohio/cleveland/tremont-valley-playfield-dog-park It's in Clark Field, a 50-acre park. Aerial: http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=clark+field+cleveland&ie=UTF8&ll=41.473442,-81.685528&spn=0.005531,0.009645&t=h&z=17

Cleveland: Whiskey Island Coast Guard Station Redevelopment
This article got me thinking. This boat, along with the Mather and the Cod, will give us three "museum boats" along the downtown waterfront. If there were an easy way to get to the old coast guard station from Northcoast Harbor (maybe a ferry service or something tied in with FEB, if/when it gets underway,) I think it would be neat if someone (Positively Cleveland? GLSC?) advertised a "floating museum tour" with admission to all three. Especially with the FEB redevelopment, I think this would merit nice tie-in advertising with the waterfront line. Just a thought.

Help a New Yorker find a great Cleveland neighborhood
Just an fyi, both Target and Walmart in Steelyard have pharmacies (and groceries, although Target has a rather limited selection,) and the 81 bus is half-hourly all day until 10 pm.

I'm going to CSU in the fall, question about campus life
Shadow, I used to live in Westlake and took RTA from Cracker Park to the east side every day. I'd either take the 46 bus (down Detroit) or drive to the Triskett rapid station (which is just off of 90 and has a free parking lot) and then take the rapid into downtown. That might be a good option for you, since you'd save on both gas and parking.

moving from west coast to cleveland
Like any populated body of water, there is some level of pollution, but it is nothing like in the past. The silver lining in the decline of Cleveland's heavy industry has been greatly improved water and air quality. As far as swimming in the lake goes, there are several beaches in the area, and they tend to be quite popular, especially on hot days. I would only have reservations about going in the water after heavy rain, which causes storm sewer overflows. If you're not sure, you can check the water quality advisories. That said, welcome to Cleveland! I hope you enjoy living here!

Moving from UK to Cleveland
Although I'm a bit biased as I live in the neighborhood, I'd suggest Tremont. You'd be very close to Metro, there are good deals to be found on rentals, and it's a very pleasant area to live in. It's fairly quiet, with lots of restaurants and art galleries, but very close to downtown and the amenities there. It's quite central to the region, too, so it would be a good "home base" for checking out other places to live if you're planning on moving when your family comes to join you. Feel free to message me if you have specific questions about the neighborhood. Old Brooklyn might also be worthwhile to check out, if you want to see a more family-oriented neighborhood. I know much less about it, though. There are certainly other places to investigate, and I'm sure other forumers will be offering their opinions, too. Wherever you end up, let me say welcome to the forum and to Cleveland!  OH, and I forgot to add that there's a UK import store in Old Brooklyn, too, in case you get a craving for aero bars or meat pies: http://www.gaelicimports.com/

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
Ask and ye shall receive: ‘Unique’ mart process frustrates MMPI Developer’s president: Back-and-forth with plethora of public officials, lack of decisive action inhibiting project’s progress By JAY MILLER 4:30 am, March 2, 2009 Christopher Kennedy saw into the future better than he could have imagined. The president of developer Merchandise Mart Properties Inc. of Chicago knew 18 months ago that it would take time to strike a deal to bring a new convention center and medical merchandise mart to Cleveland. Moving from Chicago to Cleveland in 3 weeks....Need Help!
I agree that Tremont deserves a look. Something I don't think anyone has pointed out yet is that Tremont Elementary is a Montessori elementary school. I don't know if they have a preschool program, though.

Cleveland: Random Development and News
That's a shame. I don't know the condition of the interior, but it's a handsome building on the outside, and just about the only building built up to the sidewalk on the north side of that part of Euclid.

American Regional Dialects
There is a traditional St. Louis accent that is giving way to Northern speech among the younger generations. As an illustration of the traditional St. Louis pronunciation, the word "forty-four" sounded similar to "farty-far." That's the feature that I find most noticeable, along with rhyming "on" with "awn" (although the latter is typical of most midland and southern accents.)

American Regional Dialects
Don't be too quick to pat yourself on the back. The shift was only first identified in the 60s, so even if you grew up in the 50s, you still likely exhibit many NCVS traits. You just don't realize it.

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
Maybe this would be a better discussion for another thread, but I like that idea better than having two separate transit centers for the East- and Westsides. The current hub-and-spoke model allows passengers to easily transfer from a bus coming from one side of town to the other, and I'm not sure how that would work with two different transit centers.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Not trying to take this thread off-topic, but I think the continued ridership increase is impressive considering the multiple recent fare hikes and service cuts, but particularly so at a time when the City and county are both supposedly losing population at a breathtaking rate.

Cleveland.com Comments
Excuse me. This did not happen just because the men were in Cleveland. I feel bad for the guy who got shot, but this happened because the men he chose to associate himself with are the kind of people who run around with guns and shoot people to get what they want. None of my friends are like that, and I feel perfectly safe in the city. Do a little thinking next time before you make such an ignorant comment.
