Cleveland: Downtown & Vicinity Residences Discussion
I listened to the State of Downtown City Club podcast, and Joe Marinucci stated that 125,000 "are coming into Downtown for work every day" (paraphrasing a little, but his wording was similar.) He didn't define the area he was referring to, but I'd bet it's larger than just the CBD

Cuyahoga County Sin Tax
It's pretty clear to me that the reason the tax renewal was put on the ballot for this May was because the powers that be want a few more opportunities to pass it if it fails the first time around. But since the tax doesn't expire for over a year past that vote, it's not actually that big of an emergency. We've got time to work out a better deal that addresses concerns like this, despite how it's being presented by GCP and County Council. The best use of a "no" vote in May is to bring all parties to the table and leverage a fair and well-defined deal for the taxpayers. All this other talk about "fat-cat owners" and how broke we are as a community is a sideshow, because like it or not, that ship has sailed.

Cleveland: Marketing the City
I think this marketing campaign is significantly better than previous ones, and I do like the message. But I agree that the imagery is a little too generic. IMO, the two best examples of videos capturing the "feel" of a city are the Detroit one that bumsquare posted above, and this Pittsburgh one (which is admittedly an extended ad for the Pirates.) I think they do a good job of making their respective cities look interesting without much of the typical glass-clinking that w28th mentioned. Wish I knew how to replicate it, but if I did, I would be in marketing!

Cleveland: HealthLine / Euclid Corridor
Great post. As someone making that commute daily for over 5 years, if you're coming from the west side, the HealthLine is great for going to the Clinic, and the Red Line is better if your destination is UH or somewhere on the Case Quad. Period. That will only be more true once the new UC stations are completed. To build off the point about transfer time, at rush hour there is always a Circle Link shuttle waiting at the UC Red Line station when the trains arrive. It's absolutely seamless, and a ton of people take the shuttle to their final destination. Transferring to the HealthLine downtown is nowhere near as smooth.

Cleveland: HealthLine / Euclid Corridor
Is this really true? I see from the schedule that the buses run about every 7 minutes most of the day. We have large swatches of Euclid throughout midtown that are either vacant or underdeveloped. Where does the Healthline go from where it is (if it's currently nearing its peak capacity) if midtown ever gets on its feet? Conversion to LRT? I imagine they would build an elevated busway above Euclid and run twice as many BRT vehicles down it as they already do.

Cleveland: Campus District
This project is technically just inside the Campus District's service area, although it's oriented towards the public housing that extends deeper into Central. From this morning's "In the Campus District" email- There's a link to the Care Alliance's own announcement of the project from 2012- http://www.carealliance.org/2012/05/02/care-alliance-awarded-5-5-million-for-clevelands-public-housing-residents-to-increase-access-to-health-care/

Cleveland: Downtown: The 9 / Rotunda / County Admin Development
Since I'm by no means an expert on the historic preservation tax credit program, could someone explain why it's ok for windows to be punched out where none previously existed? Are they allowed more flexibility because the building is less than 50 years old?

You're probably right- I see that on the agenda. These are the sorts of demolitions that really eat me though... Look at the giant open field behind those buildings on streetview. These neighborhoods are going from merely run-down with redevelopment potential to totally vacant and Detroity (apologies to Detroit) faster and faster. Such a shame. :(- Cleveland: Demolition Watch
Oh man, really? Those are such nice looking buildings. We just keep losing more and more of the architecture that makes Cleveland look like Cleveland.- Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
No, they're supposedly the 98th and 99th most dangerous out of the 100 cities listed. There are way more than 100 cities of 25,000 people or more in the US, which was the cutoff- Cleveland: TV / Film Industry News
Yeah, Tower City does, but Valley View has much bigger auditoriums. I'd bet that and the stadium seating are the biggest reasons.- Cleveland: University Circle: Cleveland Clinic Developments
*sigh* I always did like this building, though I liked the (very similar) Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine building more. http://goo.gl/maps/vRDEt- Cleveland: Warehouse District: Development and News
I've always heard that too, but never had any confirmation. The Crain's article says that the Kimberly-Clark LLC that owns National Terminal is K-C's "affordable housing unit" and that the company is trying to get out of affordable housing, so maybe it is true.- Cleveland: Downtown: Gateway District: Development and News
This is true, which is why L&R had to present a plan showing something built on the site. But I think Whipjacka's right- the total half-a$$ery of it all makes me think that once the building's down, it's going to stay a "temporary" parking lot for a long time. All that ordinance really means is that a property owner can't just outright say that a building is being torn down for parking- there has to be a plan to re-use it within a certain time frame (I think it's around 2 years.) In practice, there's little the city can do to compel the redevelopment to happen.- A new survey shows...

^ I got a 31, and I've been out of college for 6 years, though I have haven't taken anything civics-related since high school. That quiz has a very strong capitalist bias. I felt like several questions were more opinion-based than factual, but I was able to guess at what the "correct" answer was.- Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
^I can't remember which article I saw it in (it might have been at the press release,) but I think I remember Ricky Smith saying that CLE would lose only about 8 or 9% of its passenger traffic because of the cuts, despite the large percentage of flights being cut. I'm not sure if that's counting only connecting traffic, or O&D between CLE and places like Erie and Kalamazoo, too.- Cleveland: 2014 Gay Games IX News & Discussion
