  1. Do what pittsburgh does- 1 shooting is usually enough to declare a bar a nuisance bar and the nuisance bar tasks force closes it period: http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/s_464716.html Touch nightclub, to my knowledge, is no more after the referenced club shooting last year. In my opinion, everyone should be frisked at the door of every club. This is how they do it in Montreal and Toronto for everyone's safety. It makes even more sense to do it in Cleveland given the state of this city. Most importantly, the police presence in this city is very poor. You absolutely need cops and bike and foot, especially in high density areas at night. My hunch is that Cleveland simply doesn't have the resources (money, man-power, know-how, or intellegence) to implement any sort of effective anti-crime approach, as has been done in Pittsburgh with great success. The truth is the federal goverment needs to be held responsible to some degree and shouldn't be letting poor cities like Baltimore, Philly, or Cleveland fend for themselves. Instead, our President seems to be more concerned with sending resources overseas when they are desperately needed at home.

I totally forgot about Detroit. I was there for the first time last month- and you are right- their roads are worse than Cleveland's. As for the thaw/freeze cycle- yes many of the forementioned cities do experience them like Cleveland, but I can't help to notice that western NY's and Western's PA's roads are better than NE Ohio. Don't they also go through the same cycle? Perhaps its an engineering issue. I noticed a different feel when driving on I-79 or I-80 in PA vs. NE Ohio. Its like PA lays down concrete slabs or something.

I would if they extended the green line another mile to beachwood at Shaker and Richmond. Otherwise, there is no way to get there under 3 hours. I believe an extension of the green line was brought up in another thread- which was proposed some years ago, but of course our public officials fall short of making real change happen in this area.

Its nice to see that they are fixing up Detroit rd. But as they have completed the center-most lanes, I noticed they have left the grates sticking up way above the roads and they still knock around your car. I really hope they will fix this in the end; otherwise, I dont' see the point of re-surfacing them in the first place. As an aside, Cleveland has got to have the worst roads I've encountered anywhere. Whether on I-90, in the city, Shaker, or Lakewood, they are destroying the alignment on my car.

Why does everyone in Cleveland drive so slow in the left hand lane? It is for passing only! I just took my ohio drivers license exam and the book says that the left lane is for passing. I have lived in numerous cities and have never encountered a place where people just putter along in the left hand lane. When I pass them up in the right lane, they get all pissed off too! The police need to start enforcing this rule because it is driving me crazy! Just an added note, I have also never lived in a city where the traffic on the highways (in general, not during congested times) moves so slow. Why is this?
  6. My gf and I have been to Diamond Mens club. If Christie's and Stage 2 are anything like them, I really can't see anything bad happening to the neighborhood as a result. They are as PG-13 as you can get. the girls wouldn't even do a private dance for my gf- only table dances In addition, that area around diamond mens club is so deserted anyway, if they want to put 3 strip clubs there, why not? It would have little if any impact on the proposed east bank area or the stonebridge area anyway.
  7. Sorry I was being overdramatic- using hyperbole I guess- but it is a bit unnerving to have people hanging around the corners and asking you for change (and not just one time!). As for who are they?- I am referring to those that made the decision to pay for the strip club to move and put the homeless shelter there. I know in Pittsburgh homeless shelters and halfways houses must come before a review committee before opening and I know of circumstances where their "opening" has been denied due to community concerns (such as one in Bloomfield). Also, I believe Pittsburgh has laws limiting the number of check cashing establishments within city limits and also restricts the installation of steel bars on commercial businesses. Although the steel bar thing seems more of an east coast phenomena than midwest, it would be nice to see greater regulation of properties in the Cleveland area.
  8. I'm also new to Cleveland (3 months). My gf and I have ridden the public transporation and have walked around tremont, ohio city, and little italy and the thing that also struck us the most is the lack of people on foot and the lack of people on public transportation. When you look at these urban neighborhoods like ohio city and little italy, you can't help to suspect there would be people on foot, but there really isn't. I can't explain to you why this is, as similar neighborhoods in Pittsburgh such as the south side, bloomfield, or Oakland have loads of people on foot and loads of people on the public transit. On a related note, I spent nearly an hour driving from Beachwood back to Lakewood today around 5 pm. I suspect that people are commuting by car from suburb (home) to another suburb (work) and back. I think this is the norm in Cuyahoga county.
  9. They also have this in downtown Baltimore- called Power Plant Live. However, I think this is a cheesy way to develop. It only brings people in on Friday and Saturday night. During daytime and weeknights, the area is generally deserted (and quite scary given its Baltimore).
  10. To me, the relocation of three strip clubs to one area does not constitute a "strip club district". If you want to see a bad, seedy strip club district, go to the Block in downtown Baltimore. Things would never deteriorate to that. The much bigger issue here is that why would you relocation a homeless shelter to where a strip club is and pay for it (Stage 2)? Why bring the homeless closer to the downtown core, where you are trying to build residential population? I looked at reserve square the other day and there were homeless and bums and beggars everywhere. I have lived across a number of cities and the concentration of vagrants in the e 13th area is ridiculous. Why are they trying to further exacerbate the problem? I do believe in helping the poor, but where you do it makes all the difference. They should have found a location a little further out away from downtown to do this. This homless shelter is a only going to be a block from Reserve Square. Seriously, who was responsible for making this decision? Why does the city bother to promote itself if its just going to be homeless shelters down the street from apartments buildings where they are making a ten million dollar investment? Am I the only one that sees this as a paradox (or lack of common sense)?

I just spoke with someone that takes the rapid from Tower City to the Cedar/ Murray Hill Rd stop. He also says there shouldn't be a problem. The other person I spoke to that was telling me of the dangers informed me that they havn't been in that area in quite a few years.

I seriously can't believe that there are such limited transportation options between Little Italy and the CC. Look at this map: <a href="http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?address=11500%20Mayfield%20Rd&city=Cleveland&state=OH&zipcode=44106%2d2341&country=US&title=%3cb%20class%3d%22fn%20org%22%3e11500%20Mayfield%20Rd%3c%2fb%3e%3cbr%20%2f%3e%20%3cspan%20style%3d%22display%3ainline%3bmargin%2dbottom%3a0px%3b%22%20class%3d%22locality%22%3eCleveland%3c%2fspan%3e%2c%20%3cspan%20style%3d%22display%3ainline%3bmargin%2dbottom%3a0px%3b%22%20class%3d%22region%22%3eOH%3c%2fspan%3e%20%3cspan%20style%3d%22display%3ainline%3bmargin%2dbottom%3a0px%3b%22%20class%3d%22postal%2dcode%22%3e44106%2d2341%3c%2fspan%3e%2c%20%20%3cspan%20style%3d%22display%3ainline%3bmargin%2dbottom%3a0px%3b%22%20class%3d%22country%2dname%22%3eUS%3c%2fspan%3e%3c%2fspan%3e&cid=lfmaplink2&name=&dtype=s">Map of 11500 Mayfield Rd Cleveland, OH 44106-2341, US</a> It is such a short walking distance between Little Italy and the CC. The CC is one of the top hospitals in the world, yet I am being advised not to walk around it during the evening? What a shame the public safety can't be provided for. What further exacerbates it is there seems to be some public transporation, but you still have to walk to a bus stop (bus 6 as suggested) or walk to the rapid stop (if living downtown) at cedar and murray hill. Then, whats the point of not walking to Little Italy if you are already out there waiting for the bus to get there? And why no loop that encompasses the whole CC, Case Western, and Little Italy areas? She had the opportunity to go to Pitt for what she is doing, I wish she had gone on that interview. The area around UPMC in Oakland seems much safer and much more pedestrian friendly. From my discussion with other people here, they advise me she drives to the CC to do her clinicals. They say she should not be on the rapid or waiting for a bus after 5pm. That is apparently what everyone else does, to the benefit of the oil companies of course.

I'm not totally sure about her schedule, but it won't be 11:30, probably 7 pm at the latest. It just seems silly to move to Little Italy and drive to the CC. I'll also look into the shuttle buses. Thanks for your input.
  14. I'm being perfectly honest here: I don't know about the rest of Ohio, but girls in Cleveland aren't as attractive as those in Kansas. Sorry folks, but it's true. The small-town farmer's daughter is no stereotype. They're all over Kansas, not just in the country. And most of the attractive Kansas women have very fine features and are very feminine. The difference is, there isn't much middle ground. It's either hot-Kansas-female or a butter-churning, corn-fed, wide-hipped woman. And the Kansas ladies tend to get married earlier, so there's more single "older" (as a relative term) women here in Cleveland if you like that sort of thing. In Cleveland, you'll find the souped up, dressed-out high maintenance women at the clubs downtown, and the casual bleached-blonde wolfpacks in Tremont & Lakewood. I'm not sure what Lakewood you live in, but when I walk down detroit rd, all I see is riff raff. I have yet to see any really attractive when here. I agree Tremont and Warehouse district are the few places in Cleveland you'll see any. Also was at the Starbucks in Strongsville for an appointment for the first tiem and they were everywhere! Who knew?

Hi, My fiance will be doing clinicals at the Cleveland Clinic starting in august. Will it be safe for her (and I) to live in Little Italy and for her to walk down Euclid Ave to the Cleveland Clinic to do her clinicals? I imagine there will be times she will be walking when its dark out. I heard this is not a good area and may not be a good idea for her to be walking on Euclid Ave after 5pm. The alternative is get an apt in the Warehouse district or tremont and have her drive to school/clinicals everyday.

I did a search on progressive urban real estate in Cleveland and found 11 condos for sale at 408 W St. Clair (Grand Arcade). This does not appear to be a new construction. Anyone know why so many for sale?
  17. Just curious- what has become of BP Tower now that it is 200 Public Square? What tenants have moved in?

Most Cleveland Hts apartments have radiator heat. The landlords pick up the heating bills. We looked at about 7 apartments in that area, in some cases the landlord picked up the heat, in others they didn't.

Thanks everyone. Regarding the oversized comment, we're just trying to keep heating costs down. Also, I wasn't intending on putting those threads in my previous post when I was writing it until I realized I had those bookmarked, thats why I didn't say Montreal to begin with. MyTwoSense- I'll take a look at the picture threads you suggested.

To answer the above question, my gf and I will be moving to Cleveland as she will be starting her degree. We are coming from Canada, and we visited the area around Case (looking for apartments) and were not really pleased with what we saw in university circle, little italy, or cleveland heights. We saw numerous apartments which were dirty, oversized, and decrepid (spelling?). Keep in mind we are coming from a highly dense Canadian city with very very small living areas. Also the commercial strips along murray hill rd, mayfield, and cedar were not what I would call vibrant. We looked at one apartment in the warehouse district and agreed this is the area we should target. However, after doing more research, we found that Tremont or Ohio City were areas we should also look into. It seems that w 25th is an area we will visit based on your comments here and based on the availability of some newer apartments plus the fact that grocery store and other amenities are right around the corner. We don't mean to be so picky but this is where we are coming from just to put things in perspective: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=117601 http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=118738 http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=120752
  21. Which area- Ohio City or Tremont- has more young professionals, more people out and about, more buzz, etc? Thanks
