Wooden Nickel Architectural Antiques has doors, doorknobs, fireplace mantels, and all kinds of materials salvaged from old buildings. They also build custom furniture. I don't remember any Rookwood Tile. Ask them if they will restore your metal. I don't know the exact address. They are on Central Parkway near Music Hall. They have two other showrooms, in Montgomery, and Lebanon, I think.
  3. All I'm saying is that the Hamilton County Planning Commision, Enquirer, etc., are using the headline "Hamilton County Gains Population," when, in fact, they cannot prove it. It is misleading at best. I don't know whether Hamilton County is losing or gaining. I am also disturbed that some think that the decennial census is low by about 30%, and thus the U.S. Census is losing credibility. Nevertheless, it is my feeling that Hamilton County is losing population, based on long term trends and on other evidence. For example, some school districts are experiencing declining enrollment. Population loss is generally considered a bad thing, and planners are under political pressure to show an increase. This they do by counting housing units, without mentioning that the number of people per house is declining. Please take the "Hamilton County gains population" headline with some caution.
  4. I must again caution you that the U.S. Census did NOT change the estimate for Hamilton County. Nine communities challenged the U.S. Census, and the Census accepted the numbers. Saying that the county gained 20,248 residents assumes that there was no change in the other communities. "Hamilton County gains population" did not come from the U.S. Census.
  5. Did someone mention urban bicycle parking?
  6. "The Brent Spence is outdated, overcrowded and dangerous to travel." The Brent Spence is overcrowded and dangerous to travel. I'll give you that. But how is it outdated? "Legislation that could lead to a toll being charged on a rebuilt Interstate 75/71 Brent Spence Bridge..." Place a toll on the current bridge!
  7. ^---- Give them credit. At least they made the effort to save it.
  8. I don't mind the mix of styles as much as the form of the building. The first photo shows a building that is not bad because it mixes old brick with new glass, but because it violates many other principles. For example, this building looks like two separate buildings. Does the glass building have it's own front door, or do you enter the door of the old facade? It is not obvious from the user's view.

That low door on the ship just above water level kind of scares me.
  10. The boundary between Ohio and Kentucky derives from the colony of Virginia's cession to the United States of all land northwest of the right bank of Ohio in 1784.
  11. "Cost of a replacement for the Brent Spence Bridge: $3 billion Cost of the Regional Rail Plan defeated in 2002: $2.4 billion" It's hard to imagine that voters would approve $3 billion for a Brent Spence bridge replacement, either.
  12. A tracking club in Hamilton County has logged 200 unconfirmed sightings of a cougar or signs of couger. They set a camera trap and got a photo of one!
  13. There is a smokestack hidden inside that green structure. Also, there used to be a pyramid on top of the green structure, making the skyscraper 5 feet taller.

I worked with a guy who grew up in Montana, and he wants to return to Montana. He says that he's never felt as cold as he has in Cincinnati, and the reason is the humidity. That is, 35 degrees with high humidity feels less comfortable than 0 degrees and low humidity, according to him. So again, the moral of the story is that there are a lot of factors.
  15. I thought that the word "trolley" is derived from the word "trawler," which is the device that connects the vehicle to the overhead wire. "Trolley" is a legal word used in the Ohio Revised Code. A "trackless trolley" is an electric bus that runs on overhead wires with a trawler. Examples of streetcars that are not trolleys are horse-drawn cars and cable cars.

  17. Ok, I found the engineering drawing for these things. They are for lighting the traffic islands. It seems that they come in three varieties: on a vertical post, on a curved bracket, and hanging from a wire. Let's see who can come up with a photo of each variety! http://www.cincinnati-oh.gov/transeng/downloads/transeng_eps11473.pdf (page 5)
  18. I'm thinking it's the traffic equivalent to a yellow line, meaning drive to the right of the yellow light.
  19. I'm not 100% positive on this, but it seems that they mark traffic islands to make the islands more visible at night. Pay attention to them. Can anyone find one that's NOT on an island?
  20. "Don't know where the buses go? Somehow the less-educated minority populations of our cities navigate bus systems in large numbers, yet educated white suburbanites can't figure out where and when they go, despite them all having the internet, which has the maps and timetables on it for a decade." A planner at Queen City Metro told me that if he improved a bus route, people would still use the old route for TWO YEARS before they knew about the new route. People are creatures of habit. It seems to me that force of habit and word of mouth are more important than paper or internet bus schedules. There is a generation of suburbanites who have never been on a bus in their entire lives.

ColDay, I think I missed you by about a week in Paris. Give me a call next time!
  22. "I appeal to any white man to say, if ever he entered Logan's cabin hungry, and he gave him not meat; if ever he came cold and naked, and he clothed him not. During the course of the last long and bloody war, Logan remained idle in his cabin, an advocate for peace. Such was my love for the whites, that my countrymen pointed as they passed, and said, Logan is the friend of the white men. I have even thought to live with you but for the injuries of one man. Col. Cresap, the last spring, in cold blood, and unprovoked, murdered all the relations of Logan, not sparing even my women and children. There runs not a drop of my blood in the veins of any living creature. This has called on me for revenge. I have sought it: I have killed many: I have fully glutted my vengeance. For my country, I rejoice at the beams of peace. But do not harbour a thought that mine is the joy of fear. Logan never felt fear. He will not turn on his heel to save his life. Who is there to mourn for Logan? Not one."

  24. "There's no way the combined voting patterns of Green, Delhi, Harrison and Miami Townships brought down anything in Hamilton County." 2000 Census population Green Township 55,860 Delhi Township 30,104 Harrison Township 4,982 Miami Township 9,093 total 230,039 Hamilton County total 845,303 West Side percent 27% Adding Colerain Township, Crosby Township, Cleves, North Bend, City of Harrison, Cheviot, and parts of western City of Cincinnati would increase the percentage. So, no, the West Side does not have the votes to throw an election, but it's not insignificant, either.
  25. Well, if you map crime and public transportation, there is a correlation. However, it may just be a reflection of overall density or income levels. I have never personally seen any crime on any public transportation, but I have seen some rowdy people, most of them teenagers coming home from school, and some mental cases. The fact that there is graffiti on the bus seats and on bus shelters does not leave a good impression.
