"The city wants to put bike lanes on Livingston and there was no word on removing parking, so you can already imagine what will happen when an inattentive motorist opens their car door without looking for cyclists in the door-zone bike lane sandwiched between parked cars and the left hand lane." I often heard this prediction when bike lanes were marked on Jefferson in downtown Dayton. At least on Jefferson, if a car is parked almost against the curb, the door only extends a few inches into the bike lane...I would think a bicyclist would be in a position where this would not be a danger. Plus, I assume like most drivers, I never just open my door after I parallel park...instinctively at least look in the side mirror I guess to check for approaching cars.

I lived in the West End across from the ballpark for a year--I have mixed feelings about the place. Agreed that Main Street is rather sterile, but obviosly doing really well. The West End when I lived there had what they call a bit of a drug problem. Not sure if it has gotten better or not; I'd like to return and find out.

Dayton awarded bike-friendly status Columbus also lauded for promoting bicycling; Troy gets honorable mention. By Ken McCall, Staff Writer Updated 3:50 AM Saturday, May 1, 2010 Dayton is joining Columbus as the only cities in Ohio to be designated as “bike friendly.” The League of American Bicyclists today, May 1, will give Dayton and 15 cities across the country a bronze award for their efforts to promote bicycling. Troy was one of two Ohio cities to get an honorable mention. Dayton city leaders hope the honor from the league will lead to better things to come. full article-- http://www.daytondailynews.com/news/dayton-news/dayton-awarded-bike-friendly-status-682173.html
  7. City wants more foot traffic near UD By Lucas Sullivan, Staff Writer Updated 8:24 AM Thursday, April 29, 2010 DAYTON — City officials are discussing plans to reduce vehicle traffic on Brown and Warren streets near the University of Dayton and Miami Valley Hospital, and adding lanes to Main Street to create a better environment for pedestrians and attract more businesses. Early plans for Brown/Warren streets include going down to one lane in each direction, installing bike lanes, limiting on-street parking and widening sidewalks. Installing trees or landscaping near the street is also proposed to create a scenic buffer between pedestrians and motorists. The plan has the blessings of Miami Valley Hospital, UD, and the Rubicon Park Business Association, as well as the South Park neighborhood. 8. Well, it is happening: More Dayton streets becoming two-way By Joanne Huist Smith, Staff Writer Updated 3:14 PM Thursday, April 22, 2010 DAYTON — Two-way traffic will soon flow on several downtown streets that have been one-way since the 1960s. The federally funded $1.7 million plan is part of a multiyear effort to improve traffic flow and accessibility downtown for vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians. Stephen Seboldt, chairman of the Downtown Priority Board, said many believe the changes will encourage more people to come downtown because it will be easier to get around. Really? I'd like to add them to the map.
  10. Dayton is in the process of converting, including parts of Monument, Patterson, Jefferson, First, Second, and Fourth.
  11. A similar group took over Downtown Dayton a few months ago. Awesome.

NCR's Bill Nuti isn't the most popular guy in Dayton. Or that guy from Forbes.
  13. I will have to post pics later but as for Dayton... For downtown, Main and Monument are my favorites. Third Street has some good blocks, such as Merchants Row and the Cannery. Ludlow has the potential to be up there someday. I’ve always kind of thought that each of the historic districts has a signature street, such as Fifth in Oregon, Linden in Huffman, LaBelle in St. Anne’s, Park Drive in South Park, Grand in Dayton View, Belmonte Park in Grafton, etc. Love these streets. Edwin C. Moses for its river and downtown views, and the presence of the institutions. Wyoming Street between Brown/Warren and Wayne (along Woodland Cemetery and South Park). DeWeese Parkway and some of the other streets in the DeWeese neighborhood. Five Oaks has some nice street segments, such as Squirrel/Forest, Wroe between Five Oaks and Homewood, and Kenilworth between Redfern and Salem.

I was pretty lukewarm on Miami when I went there. However, I later realized that the professors at Miami were far superior to the professors where I went to graduate school. (Even though the grad school is rated significantly higher in the previously mentioned U.S. News and World Report rankings.) This is the main reason I recall my Miami years with fondness—you know, the actual teaching.
  15. That contest relates to the RR overpass over Wayne, your pic is of the RR overpass over 5th. The one over 5th needs a refresh.
  16. haha, just messing around Blue Line
  17. FYI, I think google has a more up-to-date shot.
  18. 2 Riverplace I believe. Never been in there, but I bet the view is incredible.
  19. The buildings were in jeopardy as they were in the path of the Blood and Tissue Center's growth plans...then the Blood and Tissue Center decided to head for the south suburbs, giving this trio another life.
  20. Hi Steve, The City of Dayton has a Blueprint for Rehabilitation on their website to give you some information on expectations for alterations in historic districts- http://www.cityofdayton.org/departments/pcd/Planning%20Docs/Blueprint%20for%20Rehabilitation-A%20Positive%20Approach%20to%20Guidelines.pdf The number for the Landmarks Commission at the City is 937-333-3683. By the way, here is the National Register nomination form for Grafton Hill http://www.cityofdayton.org/departments/pcd/planning/City%20of%20Dayton%20Historic%20Districts/Grafton_Hill.pdf
  21. Pre-Pretzinger Lane What became Doubletree
  22. One of the common themes of this thread is the dismay that the West Side has no formal gathering place, sense of place, or public square. The gathering place is whoever has the cornhole set and the beer, sense of place is Glenway, and the square is the bars of Cheviot.
  23. Pretzinger was the architect on many of Dayton's most memorable buildings, and probably worthy of a few blog entries alone (hint, hint). Pretzinger Lane is first discussed in plans here http://www.cityofdayton.org/departments/pcd/Planning%20Docs/Reibold%20Block%20Master%20Plan.pdf

    Enjoy some West Dayton Lustrons
  25. Oregon Express and Dublin Pub are my two favorite bars in Dayton. Blind Bob's is new (former Nite Owl location) so you might want to check that out. As far as food goes, well, I'm happy just eating at those places or whatever bar I'm at, but Coco's seems to be a crowd pleaser.
