  1. Cool stats. Thanks for posting.
  2. I agree...University Circle/Little Italy is a gem... Thank you to all at CIA for making my visit so lovely. I have to say it was the best visiting artist experience I have ever had! http://mollyhatch.blogspot.com/2013/01/visiting-artist-cleveland-institute-of.html
  3. miller schneider gallery opens in waterloo arts district Thursday, January 24, 2013 In another example of a fleeting pop-up becoming permanent, local artists Dott Schneider and Bryon Miller recently opened the Miller Schneider Gallery on Waterloo Road in North Collinwood to showcase seldom-seen artists and add to the district's growing visual arts scene. The gallery will stay open later on nights when there is an "interesting" show at the Beachland Ballroom and Tavern, says Schneider, who is enthused about the arts district. "We're looking forward to growing with the neighborhood," she says. The gallery has regular weekend hours. It will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays starting in February and will be open late for Walk All Over Waterloo on Feb. 1st. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/devnews/millerschneidergallery012413.aspx
  4. the next must-live cleveland neighborhood is... Joe Baur | Thursday, January 24, 2013 Some folks, like long-time residents and neighborhood activists Councilman Michael Polensek and Jack Storey, might argue that North Shore Collinwood is further along than some realize. Others, such as Cleveland’s “recovering ad man” and restaurateur Alan Glazen, think it's primed to be the city’s next must-live neighborhood. Construction on a $4-million streetscape project begins in July with several key components already coming together. Waterloo the Tavern, dubbed a bocce bar, will takeover at the Slovenian Workman’s Home, while renovation has begun on the old Harbor Pub next to the Key Bank building. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/features/northcollinwood012413.aspx
  5. University Circle Little Italy RTA Call for Artists January 14, 2013 Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) is partnering with LAND studio for a permanent public art project for a new transit station being built in Cleveland, Ohio. Cleveland’s University Circle is becoming increasingly attractive to a growing number of visitors and residents. More small-business owners, entrepreneurs, young people, and homeowners are choosing to live and work in University Circle and its surrounding neighborhoods. The area is booming with growth, including attractive student housing, vibrant mixed-use development, and impressive educational, health, and cultural destinations. To complement these development trends, the RTA is relocating a rapid transit station to Mayfield Road and E. 119th Street in Cleveland’s Little Italy neighborhood. The new station will be a short walk to University Circle, a new residential-retail development known as Uptown, a new public plaza, the new home of the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland, and the soon-to-be expanded Cleveland Institute of Art (CIA) campus. Little Italy is an ethnic neighborhood known for its historic character and walkable streets with numerous small storefronts, galleries, restaurants, and a large Catholic church. This new transit station will create a stronger connection between Little Italy and University Circle. http://www.land-studio.org/resources/competitions/university-circle-little-italy-rta-call-for-artists
  6. Thanks for all the reponses everyone (including the humorous ones!) City Club and Leandog definitely look like they deserve a visit.
  7. Hey guys, Recently, a tech company I'm involved with has received enough funding to move into a much needed HQ. One business partner wants to stay in the suburbs, while I, of course, want to have a Cleveland OH address. Here's basically our parameters for the first year: - One to two office suites would work perfectly - Able to spend $500-$800 a month - Have access to some sort of conference or meeting room We have already connected with Jumpstart, CWRU, and NorTech...but we're looking for a little more outside the box ideas before we decide. Thoughts? Thanks!
  8. One building has opened for Hazel 8. The rest is still being finished up.
  9. Feel free to chime into the comments section fellow UOers. There is a positive momentum to continue :D
  10. I like the focus on the Freshman class...CSU on the up and up: Cleveland State University's efforts to help freshmen succeed are working Karen Farkas, The Plain Dealer on January 20, 2013 at 12:00 PM, CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland State University's focus on freshmen, especially those who need remedial courses, is paying off. This year's freshmen completed their first semester with a higher GPA, more credits earned and a better academic standing than freshmen of 2011. University officials credited a coordinated effort by faculty, staff and administrators for the improvements and cited the success of new initiatives including intensive advising, additional support for those in remedial courses and a focus on monitoring attendance. "It is a very positive initial sign that if you put together the right system you can make progress," said President Ronald Berkman. "I will not run up the flag of victory after just one semester but you can't underestimate what occurred." www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2013/01/cleveland_state_universitys_ef.html
  11. CWRU on the up and up: More than 18,000 students have applied for admission to Case Western Reserve’s Class of 2017—a figure that represents growth of 25 percent over 2012, and 150 percent over those who applied five years ago. http://cwru-daily.com/news/undergraduate-applications-top-18000-for-the-class-of-2017/
  12. EDIT: I think I misunderstood looking back now. Battery Park may be the best example for Cleveland. The biggest for Cleveland is the intersection of Euclid and E.120 in University Circle...Which is also the intersection of the Redline rail and Healthline BRT. As mentioned, there is Uptown ( apartments /retail), 27 Coltman, and Circle 118 condos from these past two years, with uptown Phase II breaking ground this month. Old school TOD is definitely Shaker Square (intersection of two light rail lines)
  13. This thread hasn't been updated for a while... So how about a speech from Ari Maron last year that I've never seen: http://www.tedxcle.com/ari-maron/

  15. uh oh... Thursday, December 27, 2012 THE QUESTIONABLE PLANNING REVIEW PROCESS IN CLEVELAND UPTOWN REVIEW DELAYED: “A review of plans for a new building at the Uptown project in University Circle has been delayed until Jan. 4. The Cleveland City Planning Commission did not see the plans Friday after City Councilman Kevin Conwell said he was not told about the project and needs time to discuss it with neighbors.” http://thecivicartcleveland.blogspot.com/2012/12/the-questionable-planning-review.html

Thanks KJP. Looks like mystery solved... http://www.forbes.com/places/tn/cleveland/
  17. Usually I read the standard "Cleveland is high unemployment, high crime, and high pollution" roll my eyes and move on...but... Um...does someone need to be contacted at Forbes?? How can they legally publish this?? ...besides the serious omissions...Fortune 500 companies, CWRU, Cleveland Clinic, CMA, Cleveland Orchestra etc...what is all this head-scratching false and misinformation?? http://www.forbes.com/places/oh/cleveland/ Cleveland is home to several industries, including household cooking equipment, textiles, furniture, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and automotive parts. Cleveland State Community College and Lee University are also based in Cleveland. Cleveland is the location for the corporate headquarters of Life Care Centers of America, the largest privately-held nursing facility company in the U.S. Its location provides numerous tourist attractions including whitewater rafting, mountain climbing and shopping within the urban parts of town. Ironically enough, check out the great and accurate description they gave Pittsburgh: http://www.forbes.com/places/pa/pittsburgh/ Pittsburgh is known colloquially as ""The City of Bridges"" and ""The Steel City"" for its many bridges and former steel manufacturing base. While the city is historically known for its steel industry, today its economy is largely based on healthcare, education, technology and financial services. The City of Pittsburgh is home to many colleges, universities and research facilities, the most well-known of which are Carnegie Mellon University, Duquesne University and the University of Pittsburgh. In the 19th and 20th centuries, wealthy businessmen and nonprofit organizations donated millions of dollars to create educational and cultural institutions. As a result, Pittsburgh is rich in art and culture. Pittsburgh museums and cultural sites include the Andy Warhol Museum, the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Frick Art & Historical Center, and Pittsburgh Center for the Arts among numerous others.

  19. 318 apartments http://www.csuohio.edu/class/com/clevelandstater/Copy/140101.html 48 complete + 270 under construction EDIT: this article says 308, but it's a few months older http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/06/new_neighborhood_to_rise_on_cl.html
  20. Thanks for the additional numbers KJP. On top of that, I'd expect CSU to at least begin construction for additional housing by 2015. We're definitely inching towards some critial point numbers here.
  21. Does this improve the timeline or preserve it?
  22. Ditto. I have a buddy who lives there...I'm blown away everytime. Thanks for the photos
  23. Not bad... The price point compared to other similar townhomes in Cleveland, like 27 Coltman (without comparing square footage, etc) doesn't seem too bad at all. Plus, it's interesting to compare to other cities with similar views. What do you think a place like this would go for in a Chicago, Seattle, Portland, or a Philadelphia?
