  2. Case's field house to break ground in the Spring: Bill Belichick makes donation to Case Western Reserve University field house project to honor his father, Steve Published: Monday, December 03, 2012, 6:00 AM Updated: Monday, December 03, 2012, 6:03 AM By Michael K. McIntyre The Plain Dealer Case Western Reserve University's planned $8 million Wyant Field House got a fundraising boost this week when Bill Belichick, the Super Bowl-winning New England Patriots coach who waited until he left the Cleveland Browns to become a coaching legend, has contributed an undisclosed amount of money. The pledge honors another legendary coach, Belichik's father, Steve. The field house will feature the "Steve Belichick Varsity Weight Room," in honor of the Super Bowl-winning coach's late father. Steve Belichick was a football and basketball standout at the former Western Reserve University. He played fullback on the 1940 Western Reserve football team that beat Arizona State in the Sun Bowl on New Year's Day in 1941. Steve Belichick graduated in 1941 and went on to play for the NFL's Detroit Lions, served in World War II, then returned to Western Reserve for a master's degree in physical education. His subsequent college coaching career included 33 years as an assistant at Navy. http://www.cleveland.com/tipoff/index.ssf/2012/12/bill_belichick_makes_donation.html

Planning Commission supports Upper Chester proposal in Cleveland's Hough neighborhood By Michelle Jarboe McFee, The Plain Dealer The Plain Dealer on November 30, 2012 at 12:15 PM, updated November 30, 2012 at 12:16 PM Print CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland City Planning Commission lent its support this morning to an apartment and retail proposal in the Hough neighborhood, despite concerns expressed by the Cleveland Clinic and a nonprofit development group. The vote was a key hurdle for legislation permitting the city to enter a development agreement with the Finch Group, a Florida company. That agreement allows the city to sell the developer land in an area known as Upper Chester, after the Finch Group lines up financing, gains control of other properties and produces more detailed plans. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2012/11/planning_commission_votes_in_f.html

  9. Opportunity Corridor in Cleveland: Whatever happened to ...? By Tom Breckenridge, The Plain Dealer The Plain Dealer on November 26, 2012 at 8:00 AM, updated November 26, 2012 at 8:14 AM Print Whatever happened to Opportunity Corridor, the proposed boulevard between Interstate 490 and University Circle? ODOT and roadway advocates are studying ways to pay for the long-sought project, which has no short-term prospects for funding. Preliminary engineering continues on the 2¾-mile route. ODOT says much of the route needs to be one lane wider than originally proposed to handle the morning rush hour. The 35 mph boulevard, estimated last year to cost $220 million, would move thousands of commuters and visitors from south and west of Cleveland more quickly to the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals, as well as the educational and cultural institutions in University Circle. Just as important, advocates say, is the road's potential to spur development in downtrodden neighborhoods, including parts of Central, Slavic Village, Kinsman, Fairfax and Buckeye. Business and community leaders say the project is a top priority. ODOT has spent $4.5 million on preliminary engineering and committed $11 million more in 2014 for detailed design. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2012/11/opportunity_corridor_in_clevel.html
  10. Tack on Phillips: Philips Healthcare, University Hospitals partner for Cuyahoga County Medical Mart venture By Laura Johnston, The Plain Dealer The Plain Dealer November 26, 2012 at 6:05 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Philips Healthcare, a major maker of medical equipment, will partner with University Hospitals to showcase the latest imaging technology at Cuyahoga County's medical mart. The announcement today marks the signing of the fourth and fifth paying tenants at the downtown mart, part of a $465 million, taxpayer-financed convention center complex. It's the first announced collaboration between a health care system and a manufacturer. "The opportunity is to move this new, really cool innovation into the medical mart," said Dominic Smith, general manager of computed tomography (CT scans) for Philips, which has its North American headquarters in Highland Heights. "We can develop something in the back room, then showcase it in a more public way." http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2012/11/philips_healthcare_university.html

Getting some use today: Ameritrust rotunda in downtown Cleveland opens today for holiday concerts Published: Wednesday, November 21, 2012, 5:50 AM Updated: Wednesday, November 21, 2012, 6:12 AM By Laura Johnston, The Plain Dealer The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio — Cuyahoga County taxpayers have a chance to inspect their $45 million investment in the downtown Ameritrust complex during five free concerts in the former bank's rotunda. The first of the lunch-time concerts, provided by University Circle Inc., is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. today and will feature pianist Robert Cassidy of the Music School Settlement. "It's a great way for Clevelanders to experience Cleveland and all that's great about it," said University Circle President Chris Ronayne. "They don't have to leave Cleveland to have a great holiday." The "Circle in the City" event, which will be replicated with different University Circle performers each week, marks two firsts: the first time University Circle has brought programming downtown and the first time Ameritrust has been open to the public. http://www.cleveland.com/cuyahoga-county/index.ssf/2012/11/ameritrust_rotunda_opens_for_holiday_concerts.html

  22. pace gets to work on adding locally themed retail to colonial marketplace Thursday, November 15, 2012 Many people probably would look at the half-empty retail spaces inside downtown's Colonial and Euclid Arcades and see small, dated spaces from another era. When developer Dick Pace looks at them, however, he sees nothing but unmet potential. "We don't hit the formulas of the national brands, but instead of wringing our hands and giving up, we can take a different approach," he says. "This could be a unique place to shop where you can get local brands. This is a chance to provide the kind of product that you just can't get at Crocker Park." Pace recently signed a master lease to manage 70,000 square feet of retail space at the two arcades. He will also move his offices there. He envisions a future in which food vendors, merchandise retailers and services exist side by side. "We have some good food vendors in Sushi 86, Vincenza's and others, but what's missing is the merchandising side -- clothes, books, gifts," he says. "We're also looking at services such as concierge dry cleaning, shoe repair and tailoring." Pace already has recruited two new tenants -- the downtown farmer's market, which needed a winter home, and the Collective Upcycle pop-up shop. He also has rebranded the complex as the "Fifth Street Arcades," thus retaining the historic name while highlighting its position between E. 4th and PlayhouseSquare. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/devnews/fifthstreetarcades111512.aspx
  23. Joy Roller has been named president of Global Cleveland, the agency launched a year ago to extend a welcome mat to immigrants and native-born Americans, with an eye to repopulating the city and Cuyahoga County and boosting the region's economy. Roller's resume lists political science, divinity and law degrees; a 20-year career as a television producer that stretched to nine urban markets; and political work that included a VH1 documentary, "Bill Clinton: Rock and Roll President." http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2012/11/global_cleveland_draws_new_lea.html
