Neighborhood Spotlight: Bob & Linda Yanega – New residents enjoy the neighborhood Posted by: lmills Posted on: 13 November 2012 at 9:00 am Just two months after moving to Larchmere, new residents Bob & Linda Yanega already feel like they’ve found a home. “We knew we’d like Larchmere,” said Bob. “We just didn’t realize we’d fall in love with it.” Bob and Linda arrived here under unusual circumstances. “We had 28 days to move 27 years of marriage from our Solon home of 20 years,” says Bob. http://www.neighborhood-voice.com/2012/11/13/neighborhood-spotlight-bob-linda-yanega-new-residents-enjoy-the-neighborhood/

Cleveland: East Side Neighborhood Development
Pop-up retail center in Cleveland draws interest from the old and new world Robert L. Smith, The Plain Dealer By Robert L. Smith, The Plain Dealer on November 08, 2012 at 5:00 PM, updated November 08, 2012 at 11:32 PM The words "Slovenian Auditorium" are chiseled in stone high above the storefront that will house Yvonne Jones's new business, a hip hop dance studio. She's already met her next-door neighbors, friendly genealogical researchers, who asked nervously about music volume. Jones is a pioneer in an effort to revive a faded retail district with a new generation of shopkeepers. She soon will bring her energy and talents to a trial designed to become permanent, as 10 or so new businesses open in quick succession. "It's going to be all of us. All of us," she said, waving a hand at the vacant storefronts running down St. Clair. "And that's really going to be nice." As it adds shops and galleries to a lonely streetscape, an uncommon business strategy will create a colony of sudden entrepreneurs. The likely camaraderie, Jones and others say, is as enticing as a rent waiver. www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2012/11/popup_retail_center_in_clevela.html

Cleveland: TV / Film Industry News
For some reason, I had no idea this movie actually takes place in Cleveland. 'Fun Size': Cleveland gets its close-up in new comedy starring Victoria Justice Published: Sunday, October 21, 2012, 6:00 PM Updated: Monday, October 22, 2012, 2:24 PM Clint O'Connor, The Plain Dealer By Clint O'Connor, The Plain Dealer Cleveland's cinema history has identity issues. While several films have been shot here, few are set here. The ones set here are usually not shot here. "Major League," the beloved baseball movie celebrating the Indians, was made mostly in Milwaukee. The holiday classic "A Christmas Story," which was partially filmed here and has a museum here, is set in Indiana. "Kill the Irishman," about the explosive exploits of Cleveland gangster Danny Greene, was made in Detroit. Even the latest rash of film shoots, thanks to the Ohio Motion Picture Tax Credit and the Greater Cleveland Film Commission, have not exactly been Ohio travelogues. The majority of "Alex Cross" was filmed here with Cleveland masquerading as Detroit. "Marvel's The Avengers" staged its major action scenes here, but Cleveland was playing New York and Germany. "Fun Size" trumps them all. Shot entirely in Greater Cleveland, it is also set entirely in Greater Cleveland. In the new comedy starring Victoria Justice and Chelsea Handler, which opens nationwide Friday, we see downtown, the skyline, the majesty of the lake, the beauty and character of neighborhoods in Lakewood, Cleveland Heights and Beachwood and the rumpled urban charm of Collinwood, among other locales. http://www.cleveland.com/moviebuff/index.ssf/2012/10/fun_size_cleveland_gets_its_cl.html

Rust Belt Revival Ideas, Predictions & Articles
I too find it fascinating the two "rebirth" or "ruin" articles that are often run. Reality is a summation of many differing complexities. IMO, it seems the urban planning renewal for these cities (Cleveland current boom -- Ohio City, Downtown, University Circle, Detroit Shoreway) are in hopes of spillover rejuvenation of the surrounding areas of “ruin” – planting the seeds in places who already have the bare bones. In terms of the rest belt as a whole, seeds are being planted across these cities. Currently it seems to be attracting young professionals and empty nesters, which is recreating new life in parts of these cities and rival and/or beat out many other cities across the country. The true indicator of rival is when middle class families begin to return. (In Cleveland, best example of this happening is Battery Park)

Cleveland: University Circle: Uptown (UARD)
One more for Accent and the plaza: Wednesday, October 17, 2012 An Uptown Accent by Laura Taxel I challenge anyone to walk into the Accent, Scott and Brenda Kim's new restaurant in University Circle, and not give a little gasp of amazement, especially after dark. The space is dramatic, ultra contemporary, and unique. The red and black color scheme is sophisticated and intense. Lighting has been used as a design element and after the sun sets the place simply glows. The cumulative effect simply wows the eyes and announce that this is something special. Big windows face a pedestrian friendly plaza. There are plans for a patio equipped with a fireplace. It promises to be a wonderful gathering place, inside and outside the restaurant, in all seasons. Other restaurants are planned for this urban hub. Accent, opening to the public October 29, is the first, and it will launch Uptown as a true culinary district, much like East 4th Street. Both projects reflect the vision of the Maron family and their development company MRN Ltd. The patriarch Rick and his wife Judy were also at the Accent event, and when were introduced, I felt compelled to thank him for the way he's investing in and helping to transform this city. http://clevelandmagazine.blogspot.com/2012/10/an-uptown-accent_17.html

Accent set to open Oct 29: Side Dish: Beautiful Accent Comes to Uptown Posted by Elaine Cicora on Fri, Oct 12, 2012 at 5:20 PM We got a sneak peek last night at Accent, Scott and Brenda Kim's sleek, sophisticated, multicultural restaurant in the new Uptown district near University Circle. Set to open October 29, the 192-seat space is all done up in a palate of black, red, and white, with stunning back-lit walls and ceiling, polished concrete floors, and a centrally located bar and open kitchen anchoring the oval-shaped room. But even more, the restaurant is a dream come true for the Kims, who also own the highly successful Sasa, a Japanese-style izakaya bistro on Shaker Square. Scott Kim says he started talking with developer Ari Maron about the project more than two years ago. "We've know the Maron family for a long time. When they showed me their vision for Uptown, I didn't think twice before signing on. My dream has long been to create a very different kind of dining experience — one where there are multicultural elements on every plate. With its population of professionals, artists, and students, University Circle seems like the perfect spot for that type of dining." http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2012/10/12/side-dish-beautiful-accent-comes-to-uptown
