Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland readies new building for public debut (video) Published: Monday, October 01, 2012, 9:45 PM Updated: Monday, October 01, 2012, 9:50 PM Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer By Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer MOCA opens this weekend MOCA opens this weekend David Noor, chief curator at MOCA, Cleveland's museum of contemporary art, talks about MOCA's new home at the corner of Euclid and Mayfield in uptown Cleveland. Grand opening parties are this weekend, and the museum is free to the public on Monday, Oct. 8. Watch video The Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland, which opened in a tiny storefront on Euclid Avenue in University Circle 44 years ago and then left in search of more space, has finally come back to its roots. On Monday, the museum showed off its striking new building at Euclid and Mayfield Road in University Circle to members of the media. The $27.3 million, 34,000-square-foot structure is a seductively mysterious four-story gemstone sheathed in reflective panels of black stainless steel. It was designed by architect Farshid Moussavi of London, a native of Iran and an up-and-coming international star. The building is both her first museum and her first assignment in the United States. "I think it's the new Cleveland," said Stewart Kohl, president of MOCA's board of trustees. "MOCA will be a kind of draw that we really haven't had." www.cleveland.com/arts/index.ssf/2012/10/museum_of_contemporary_art_cle_8.html

    ^ Thanks! good find.
  11. I too am curious about losing the population density and dynamic of the UH-Case Med complex. This expansion gives me the feeling of sprawling out. We can only hope it does spur future growth on the western edge of University Circle.

Superman exhibit opens Oct. 11 at Hopkins Airport Published: Sunday, September 23, 2012, 3:00 PM Michael Sangiacomo, The Plain Dealer By Michael Sangiacomo, The Plain Dealer Beginning Oct. 11, Superman will welcome fellow fliers to Cleveland. A permanent Superman exhibit opens at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport that Thursday evening, and you won't need X-ray vision to find it. It will be in the baggage claim area where most people eventually end up. Laura Siegel Larson, daughter of Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel, will come in from California to speak at the 6 p.m. dedication ceremony, that is free and open to the public. Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson, other relatives of Siegel and Shuster and Airport Director Ricky Smith are among expected speakers. super3.jpgAPSuperman creators Joe Shuster (left) and Jerry Siegel admired a drawing of the Man of Steel flying them through the air in this photo taken in 1975. The Superman exhibit was put together by the Siegel and Shuster Society, a group formed to honor the two Glenville boys who created a worldwide cultural icon in the midst of the Great Depression. Superman fans contributed about $50,000 to make the exhibit a reality. www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2012/09/superman_exhibit_opens_oct_11.html
  13. Cleveland Heights' Nighttown planning expansion Published: Friday, September 21, 2012, 1:00 PM Brian Byrne, Sun News By Brian Byrne, Sun News CLEVELAND HEIGHTS--Nighttown owner Brendan Ring realized this summer that he had a somewhat enviable problem for a restaurateur; the patio at his historic Cedar Road eatery was booked with private events every Friday and Saturday night from Memorial Day through mid-November. While it pleased Ring that the 2002 addition to the fabled jazz venue had became a favorite locale to host special occasions, regular customers had begun voicing frustration at the lack of a weekend outdoor dining option. So, to help accommodate his bustling business, Ring is planning a second patio at the rear of the restaurant. Called “The Secret Garden,” the 900-square foot roofed stone enclosure will feature water accents, a fire pit and seating for 75. Designed by Cleveland Heights-based Robert W. Blatchford Architects, the new patio will bring a “very contemporary” look to Nighttown’s exterior, Ring said, a departure from the interior’s traditional decor. He expects the addition to cost $300,000. http://www.cleveland.com/cleveland-heights/index.ssf/2012/09/cleveland_heights_nighttown_pl.html

  15. Urban farms are taking root in Cleveland, bringing home surprising harvests Published: Friday, September 21, 2012, 9:00 AM Updated: Friday, September 21, 2012, 10:04 AM Debbi Snook, The Plain Dealer By Debbi Snook, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Old MacDonald had a farm, but probably not on an abandoned city lot tended by a farmer from Burma and supported by some of the top restaurants in town. Cleveland, however, has such unconventional growing places. After only a few years of operation, they are bringing home surprising harvests. Taut-skinned eggplant and fragrant parsley are being snipped off a row and, within minutes, walked three blocks to Flying Fig, Great Lakes Brewing Co. and other popular dining spots in the city's Ohio City neighborhood. Off East 55th Street, a flower and vegetable farm provides cherished jobs for folks with developmental disabilities. A few forgotten acres in the Kinsman neighborhood are now a green training ground for farming entrepreneurs. And a vineyard in Hough hasn't made its first bottle of wine yet, but the vines look good, and the first cork is expected to pop next year. http://www.cleveland.com/taste/index.ssf/2012/09/urban_farms_are_taking_root_in.html

  18. CSU to demolish 2 buildings for new Center for Innovation in Health ProfessionsPublished: Thursday, September 20, 2012, 12:10 PM Updated: Thursday, September 20, 2012, 12:33 PM By Karen Farkas, The Plain Dealer The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland State University's $45 million Center for Innovation in Health Professions will soon be under construction on Euclid Avenue at the site of the former Viking Hall dormitory and Wolfe Music Building. Concerns about demolishing the Wolfe structure had threatened to delay the project. The Cleveland Planning Commission is expected on Friday to approve the demolition of both buildings, after CSU reached an agreement with Councilman Jeff Johnson, who wanted to preserve the Wolfe building. The city's Design Review Board approved the action today. The university sold bonds in August to finance $35 million of the building's cost. The Northeast Ohio Medical University, which is partnering with CSU to train doctors focused on urban health and primary care, will contribute $10 million. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2012/09/cleveland_state_university_wil.html#incart_river_default
