Cleveland: Downtown: Playhouse Square Development and News
New Cleveland State University gallery kicks off 1st season with faculty show, but the star is the space itself Published: Wednesday, September 19, 2012, 3:00 PM By Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland State University has kicked off the first fall season at its beautiful new art gallery on Euclid Avenue with exhibitions on works by faculty and black-and-white photographs of Cleveland by veteran Cleveland architectural photographer Jennie Jones. The shows, on view through Saturday, Oct. 20, are pretty good, but the real news here is the gallery itself – and its potential. Located in a portion of the restored Cowell & Hubbard Building at 1307 Euclid Ave., the gallery sits next to chef Zachary Bruell’s new restaurant, which also bears the name of the building. http://www.cleveland.com/arts/index.ssf/2012/09/cleveland_state_university_art_2.html#incart_river_default

Cleveland: Cleveland State University News & Info
Cleveland State University building campus life options Published: Wednesday, September 19, 2012, 6:00 AM Updated: Wednesday, September 19, 2012, 7:25 AM By Karen Farkas, The Plain Dealer The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio --Until recently, there was little incentive to plan activities and events at Cleveland State University because most students commuted to campus and only stayed long enough to attend class. Now, with a vibrant residential population and a large number of younger, full-time commuter students lingering on campus, university and student leaders are adding programming, courting national fraternities and sororities, and encouraging students to get involved. Student government members convinced CSU President Ronald Berkman and other administrators to allocate an additional $400,000 this year for student activities. About one-fourth of that will be used to stage a full slate of activities during Homecoming from Oct. 11-14. New events include a parade, an alumni breakfast, tailgate party, races and a concert featuring Boys Like Girls, the All-American Rejects and the Ready Set. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2012/09/cleveland_state_university_bui.html

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
Cleveland mayor proposes one development team for lakefront Published: Tuesday, September 18, 2012, 2:48 PM Updated: Tuesday, September 18, 2012, 6:14 PM By Laura Johnston, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Mayor Frank Jackson proposed Tuesday to fast-track his vision for a bustling downtown lakefront, where Clevelanders could board a charter boat, grab a bite, report to work and even make a home. Rather than allow disparate developers to build the project piecemeal over numerous years, Jackson wants one firm -- or perhaps a partnership -- to dream up a blend of businesses, apartments, paths and parks, then quickly transform the concept into reality. "We're not looking at a hodgepodge of project upon project," Jackson said in a phone interview. "We're looking at a comprehensive approach. It's our way of guaranteeing the lakefront plan." To help him choose the right developer, Jackson said he is seeking advice from a seven-member panel of community and business leaders. Representatives from Cuyahoga County government, the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority, Greater Cleveland Partnership, Presidents Council, Cleveland Browns, Great Lakes Science Center and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will help draft a formal request for proposals and review the ideas as they stream in. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2012/09/cleveland_mayor_proposes_one_d.html

Cleveland: East Side Neighborhood Development
Not sure where to post this! Cleveland Range will add jobs and expand in Collinwood Published: Monday, September 17, 2012, 10:00 PM Robert L. Smith, The Plain Dealer By Robert L. Smith, The Plain Dealer A venerable Cleveland maker of commercial ovens is expected to add jobs and grow in strength and stature following an agreement with the City of Cleveland. Following the lead of the finance committee, City Council Monday night approved a package of incentives that helped to convince Manitowoc Foodservice of Wisconsin to make Cleveland the headquarters of its oven manufacturing division. That means new offices and more than 100 new jobs at Cleveland Range, which already employs 260 people at a sprawling complex at 1333 East 179th St. in Collinwood. www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2012/09/cleveland_range_will_add_jobs.html

planning for gay games, cleveland is 'ahead of schedule' Thursday, September 13, 2012 Metro Weekly, D.C.'s gay and lesbian news magazine, writes in an article titled "Planning for Gay Games in 2014 is ahead of schedule" that "Many people around the world were shocked when Cleveland beat Boston and Washington, D.C., in the battle to host the Gay Games in 2014. However, Ohio's second largest city is proving it is not just up for the task but ready to set the bar for future Gay Games." Leading up to the Gay Games, which will take place in Cleveland August 9 to 16, 2014, organizers are ahead of schedule when it comes to planning. Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway / Gordon Square Arts District: Development News
developer breaks ground on 'only new, for-sale housing development in city' Thursday, September 13, 2012 Experienced Cleveland developer Mike DeCesare recently started construction on the Waverly Station Townhomes in Detroit Shoreway -- a 22-unit project that is the only new, for-sale housing development to break ground in the City of Cleveland this year. "Getting the project up and running was no small task, as it proved to be impossible to find conventional bank financing for the project," he says. "We ended up doing private financing. We had investors willing to put money into it." The project is located on a one-block stretch of land along Bridge Avenue between West 57th and 58th streets. DeCesare acquired a parcel of vacant land from Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization and purchased several distressed multifamily properties that he tore down. These additional parcels expanded the project and will add to the sense of community, he says. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/devnews/waverlytownhomes091312.aspx

Cleveland: Case Western Reserve University News & Info
I think CWRU was expecting to move up more with the launch of the $1 Billion fundraising campaign, most accomplished freshman class ever, and highest percent jump in applications. Nonetheless: Case Western Reserve climbs to 37th in U.S. News’ Best Colleges 2013 rankings Posted: September 12th, 2012 | Author: thedaily | Filed under: accolades, news | No Comments » Case Western Reserve University moved up another position to 37th among national universities in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges 2013 Edition. The increase comes after last-year’s three-slot jump and reflects the institution’s continued progress in admissions, alumni engagement and overall academic reputation. “Our board, faculty, staff, students, graduates and other supporters all play a part in these improvements,” President Barbara R. Snyder said. “Thanks to extraordinary efforts by all of these individuals, our campus is gaining increasing recognition across the country.” After earning recognition as one of The Huffington Post’s top nine “trendiest” colleges and The Washington Monthly’s top 10 schools that contribute to the common good, Case Western Reserve this year set its third straight-record for an all-time high of applicants. At nearly 14,800, the figure more than doubles the total applicants from five years earlier (7,280). In addition, the class admitted this year represents the single largest, most diverse, and most academically qualified in the institution’s history. It includes 74 valedictorians, 42 salutatorians and 65 National Merit Finalists, as well as young people who have won national athletic championships, performed at Carnegie Hall and the Hollywood Bowl, penned a 50,000-word novel and invented a touchscreen technology for Braille that has a patent pending. http://thedaily.case.edu/news/?p=9823

Cleveland: Filling in Euclid Avenue
Not sure of this should go into Playhouse Square or Cleveland State, but still nothing on the old JCC: What became of 1750 Euclid Ave.? Posted: Thursday, September 6, 2012 6:18 pm | Updated: 6:19 pm, Thu Sep 6, 2012. In 2010, when the Jewish Federation left its former headquarters at 1750 Euclid Ave. in downtown Cleveland for the Mandel Building in Beachwood, it remained in possession of the downtown property. It was announced that Federation would give the building to the Cleveland Metropolitan School District on a 10-year, rent-free lease to house the junior and senior classes of its MC2STEM magnet high school. “The Cleveland school board, after their own due diligence, determined the downtown building would not serve their purpose,” said Michael D. Siegal, Federation board chair, further explaining that the decision was made in fall 2011. “We did engage in exploratory conversations with the Jewish Federation to see if that facility was a good fit for one of our STEM schools,” she said. “Had it been the right fit for all of the programming and all of the partnerships that occur, we would’ve gone down that route. … The building is configured more for business activities.” http://www.clevelandjewishnews.com/article_cfc469e2-f870-11e1-8443-0019bb2963f4.html
