Cleveland: Ohio City: Development and News
September 5, 2012 What Public Spaces Like Cleveland’s West Side Market Mean for Cities The greatest public markets are the ones that simultaneously serve city residents’ daily food needs, while functioning as a tourist attraction for visitors who want to witness local culture in action. While brand strategists obsess over how to communicate “authenticity,” public markets are inherently one of the most authentic expressions of a place, and therefore an ideal symbol for a city to use when representing itself to the world—as long as they are thriving, of course. There are a number of good examples of market cities in the U.S., but one of the best is Cleveland, where the century-old West Side Market has become a key engine in the city’s revitalization. The market building itself is one of Cleveland’s finest architectural gems—a vast, red-brick terminal with stunningly high vaulted ceilings, book-ended with massive, arched windows. On the ground, as the vendors will attest, is an open opportunity for small-scale sellers to establish themselves in the market economy and build a livelihood. And, following PPS’s definition as a hub from which other market activities spin out and cluster, the West Side Market is now just one [albeit sizeable] node in a buzzing network of food-related endeavors—restaurants, farmers’ markets, urban farms—which are assembling into a whole new identity for the “Rust Belt” city. This month in Cleveland, PPS will host their annual Public Markets Conference, an event design to help more cities leverage their markets as engines for urban growth. I’ll be attending the event to learn more about the role of markets in the city of the future, from Santa Monica to Hong Kong; and I’ll be touring Cleveland’s urban and rural food hubs to get a better sense of how it all links together in one American city. I’ll be writing more about my experiences right here in a couple of weeks. Stay tuned. http://blogs.smithsonianmag.com/design/2012/09/what-public-spaces-like-clevelands-west-side-market-mean-for-cities/

Case Western Reserve University Spartans Athletics Discussion
Case Football started its 2012 season with a W. And again, no PD coverage for this team in the city limits of Cleveland . Nice article from the Marietta Times though: College football: Pioneers come up short in opener September 3, 2012 By Mike Morrison - Sports Writer , The Marietta Times The Marietta College Pioneers bid for a season opening, come-from-behind, final quarter victory came up just short as the Case Western Reserve Spartans clipped the Pios 26-23 at Don Drumm Stadium Saturday night. The Pioneers jumped out to a quick 10-0 first-quarter lead, only to surrender 26 unanswered Spartan points before staging their fourth-quarter rally. With under two minutes to play and Case Western facing a third-and-12 at the Pioneer 49-yard line, running back Manny Sicre ripped off a 15-yard run that proved to be the deciding play on a night where there were no shortages of big plays. A short 24-yard field goal attempt by freshman kicker Conor Durina was wide left and the Pioneers had missed a golden opportunity to take control of the game against the heavily favored Spartans. "Any time you play a quality opponent you've got to take advantage of those kind of situations," said Pioneer head coach Jeff Filkovski. "We easily could have gone up a couple of touchdowns but we just made too many mistakes." www.mariettatimes.com/page/content.detail/id/546391/College-football--Pioneers-come-up-short-in-opener.html

More arcade discussion: Arcades lease is a big retail play fit for a resurgent downtown Cleveland: editorial Published: Monday, September 03, 2012, 8:07 PM The Plain Dealer Editorial Board As the downtown areas of older, large American cities struggle to regain vibrancy, retail is often the last sector to rebound. And when it does, it rarely resembles the department-store-based shopping experience that an older generation remembers. Those stores long ago moved to the suburbs, then morphed into big boxes and what developers now call power centers. The retail that does seem to work these days -- as Paul Levy of Center City Philadelphia noted earlier this year during the first of the Cleveland Connects community conversations -- often starts out small scale, quirky and locally based. That reflects the reluctance of many national brands or chains to take a chance on neighborhoods that don't yet meet their demographic targets. But it also reflects the changing nature of America's new/old downtowns. Increasingly, they are filled not just with 9-to-5 commuters or out-of-town visitors, but with creative-class professionals who work and live in the heart of the city -- and who like to shop in places that are distinctive and local. www.cleveland.com/opinion/index.ssf/2012/09/a_big_retail_play_fit_for_a_re.html

Cleveland: Wind Turbine Construction News
Cleveland State University wind turbines at Progressive Field are overachievers Published: Monday, September 03, 2012, 3:07 PM Karen Farkas, The Plain Dealer The wind turbines attached to that distinctive plastic corkscrew atop Progressive Field are overachievers. The four mounted turbines are generating more than 4.5 times as much energy than if the turbines were standing alone, according to data collected by Cleveland State University. "In terms of the fluid mechanics aspects of the device, it is doing exactly what we predicted," said Majid Rashidi, the chairman of CSU's department of engineering technology who developed the system. "Usually theory and practice don't match." Rashidi's theory was that the structure would deflect wind into the turbine, creating more energy. CSU received a $1.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy in 2008 to design and install two structures based on Rashidi's patented system. It involves a wind-deflecting structure with small-scale turbines able to generate power at low wind speeds. Rashidi revised his concept, including reconfiguring the cylinder to look like an ice cream cone with a twist. www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2012/09/cleveland_state_university_win.html

Cleveland: Case Western Reserve University News & Info
Case Western Reserve stays atop the "For Good" rankings of national universities: Case Western Reserve University ranks No. 7 in national magazine's list of top universities Posted: 08/28/2012 Last Updated: 7 hours and 23 minutes ago By: Carrie Nagorka, newsnet5.com CLEVELAND - Case Western Reserve University remained in the national top 10 this year in Washington Monthly's annual rankings of colleges that contribute to the best interests of students and the country. Last year marked the first time the university broke into the magazine's highest tier, leaping from 17th to seventh. For 2012, Case Western Reserve stayed in the same spot, while institutions such as Harvard and the University of Michigan fell out of the top 10. Also this year, Stanford University moved from fourth to third, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill jumped from 12th to fourth. Washington Monthly's ratings focus on three primary criteria: research excellence, social mobility of students, and campus commitment to service. Case Western Reserve's data placed it particularly high in service-related categories. Cleveland: Little Italy: Development and News
Im not saying this area should be developed as townhouses or like coltman27, but I did put this together just for fun to see how many units would fit. Based on this rough "rendering" I guess you could call it lol, I come up with about 54 units the size of coltman27. Im guessing it could hold about 80 Hazel8 style units. Good news. The rumor in the neighborhood is the building is officially condemned. Developers may get to strike at it sooner than we expected. All my connections on Coltman Rd have said the building "officially condemned." Not to mention half of the frikin roof is gone... Anyway to verify this info through the city/county? Speaking of new residential, a few pics from today: 1) Random Rd foundations: 2) Fairview Ave

Mandel Foundation donates $7.5 million to Cleveland Museum of Art expansion and renovation Published: Tuesday, August 21, 2012, 6:00 PM Updated: Tuesday, August 21, 2012, 6:36 PM Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer By Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer The much-beloved Armor Court at the Cleveland Museum of Art was in its second decade in the 1930s when a young Morton Mandel visited for the first time on a school trip. He was electrified by the shields, broadswords, tapestries and battle armor on view — and savors the memory. “The Armor Court is in my psyche,” he says. “I’ve always been dazzled by it.” Now a highly successful businessman and philanthropist, Mandel is showing gratitude by donating $7.5 million through his family’s foundation to push the museum’s eight-year, $350 million expansion and renovation closer to completion. http://www.cleveland.com/arts/index.ssf/2012/08/mandel_foundation_donates_75_m.html
