Global Cleveland reaches out: Global Cleveland adds youth, diversity and a partner Published: Tuesday, June 05, 2012, 6:00 PM Robert L. Smith, The Plain Dealer By Robert L. Smith, The Plain Dealer Two new and innovative talent-attraction groups have decided to combine their respective quests to add energy and people to Greater Cleveland. Engage! Cleveland, a fledgling umbrella group of young professional organizations, will become part of Global Cleveland, the year-old agency trying to boost the regional economy by welcoming the world. The merger is seen as adding youth and diversity to Global Cleveland's 48-member board, which is weighted toward establishment groups and figures. At the same time, it should lend Engage! Cleveland a running start as it seeks to empower young adults. "We view this as a chance for wonderful synergy," said Baiju Shah, the president of BioEnterprise and chairman of the board of Global Cleveland, a non-profit agency that hopes to grow and retain jobs by attracting a new wave of skilled workers and entrepreneurs. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2012/06/global_cleveland_adds_youth_di.html

Cleveland west side neighborhood turns garbage dump into community park and garden Tire planters provide a place to growing crops Posted: 06/04/2012 Last Updated: 5 hours and 50 minutes ago By: Brian Archer, newsnet5.com By: Brian Archer, newsnet5.com CLEVELAND - With the help of people living in the neighborhood, Pastor Gordon Martin of the Prince of Peace Outreach and Deliverance Ministries, organized a grassroots effort to convert an abandoned lot into a community park and garden. Their first step was to clean up the land. "This was literally a debris dump," said Martin. "There were refrigerators, car parts, tires, or course, all kinds of trash." Area residents began to clean up the lot. With the trash removed and the ground leveled out, the group decided they would create a garden. Using old tires, bathtubs, and other salvaged containers from the cleanup to hold planting soil, the residents created their garden. Anyone in the area could come and plant vegetables or flowers. New park is open! Re-opening of renovated Market Square Park opens West Side Market's centennial celebration Published: Saturday, June 02, 2012, 9:42 PM Updated: Saturday, June 02, 2012, 9:58 PM Tom Feran, The Plain Dealer By Tom Feran, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Keeping fresh for 100 years is something to celebrate. Cleveland started on Saturday with an outdoor party opening the centennial celebration of the West Side Market. "This is just another example of how the city of Cleveland invests in our neighborhoods," Mayor Frank Jackson said. "We're positioning Cleveland for the future. This is symbolic of what we want to do for every neighborhood." Councilman Joe Cimperman called the market "the only address in Cleveland that has a million families that call it home." He said the park was "always intended to be its outdoor dining room." Helping to make that point, a diverse crowd of about 500 sampled free ice cream from Mitchell's Homemade and soft pretzels from Sterle's Country House, while an array of ethnic dancers and musicians provided entertainment that climaxed with fireworks at nightfall. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2012/06/re-opening_of_renovated_market.html

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway / Gordon Square Arts District: Development News
Cleveland-area planners to consider sending $27 million to West 73rd Street project Published: Saturday, June 02, 2012, 5:45 AM Tom Breckenridge, The Plain Dealer By Tom Breckenridge, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio — The region's top planning body will vote on plowing $27 million into a new West Side link with the lakeshore. The five-county agency could vote as soon as Friday to send federal money to the West 73rd Street underpass, long planned in the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood. An approval from the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency would be good news for city officials and neighborhood residents. ODOT earned their scorn by announcing in January that $30 million for the project could be delayed until 2026, despite saying for years that funding was in place. The project would extend West 73rd north as a tunnel under an active rail line. The street would then jog to the east and connect with an existing tunnel under the West Shoreway, leading to Edgewater Park. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2012/06/post_25.html

Cleveland: Downtown Office Buildings Updates
Tis a good time to be Downtown Downtown Cleveland offices snag new, expanding tenants, in a shift from decades of corporate flight Published: Thursday, May 31, 2012, 7:55 PM Updated: Thursday, May 31, 2012, 7:59 PM Michelle Jarboe McFee, The Plain Dealer By Michelle Jarboe McFee, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Insurance brokerage Britton-Gallagher will close its Solon headquarters today, after 70 years in the East Side community. On Monday, the business will reopen in new space, on the 30th floor of the chisel-shaped One Cleveland Center office tower at East Ninth Street and St. Clair Avenue. After decades of corporate flight to the suburbs, downtown Cleveland's office market seems to be reemerging as a contender. Suburban tenants like Britton-Gallagher are eyeing the center city as a place to grow and recruit workers. Existing downtown businesses, including Quicken Loans and the Sherwin-Williams Co., are expanding. And some far-flung companies, including the U.S. arm of London-based staffing firm Alexander Mann Solutions, are considering deals that would bring hundreds of jobs to the central business district within a few years. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2012/05/post_100.html

The Official *I Love Cleveland* Thread
Take Me Back to the Rust Belt City Posted: 05/31/2012 11:27 am At the recent CEOs for Cities Spring National Meeting in Cincinnati, AOL co-founder and former CEO and Chairman Steve Case noted that the most important factor for a city to thrive is attracting and developing talent. Indeed, many speakers at the two day gathering focused on the importance of a skilled and educated workforce. And, for as long as I've lived and worked in Cleveland, there have been at least a dozen initiatives aimed at curbing the malaise that is Brain Drain. All of this got me thinking about why I am where I am and have been since graduating college in 2005. For me, it had and has everything to do with my generation and its inherent me-ness. While this is not generally considered a positive trait, it is derived from wanting to continuously learn, be challenged and, most importantly, have an impact. Of course, this all has to be done in a place that is unique and quirky. In a city that has suffered some serious hardships throughout the course of the 20th century and has worked arduously to revitalize itself in the past couple of decades, the ability to have all those things abounds. Over the past seven years, I've been fortunate to have worked for a nonprofit that helps mid-market companies grow in value; an art and technology festival; a collaboration of philanthropic organizations and individuals working to strengthen the economic competitiveness of a 16-county Northeast Ohio region; and, most recently, a startup initiative looking to reimagine democracy in the 21st century through online and offline tools that foster collective action. I'm on the board of a foundation dedicated to improving, maintaining and celebrating the vitality of regional freshwater resources and a partner in a philanthropic venture fund that supports nonprofit organizations in Cuyahoga County. Along the way, I've worked with and learned from top business consultants, entrepreneurs, philanthropists, journalists, academics and artists. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mike-shafarenko/take-me-back-to-the-rust-_b_1559277.html
