Cleveland: Local Media News & Discussion
As of this week, New Orleans has become the largest city without a daily print newspaper http://www.philly.com/philly/business/homepage/20120524_ap_timespicayunetocutpaperto3daysaweek.html And who is the decision-maker and owner of this newspaper?? Advance Publications If this name doesn't sound familiar, it should. They are also the same owner of both the Plain Dealer and cleveland.com http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance_Publications Question -- should we be worried at all??

Ronald McDonald House is set to expand, serving more families of sick kids being treated in Northeast Ohio Published: Sunday, May 27, 2012, 7:45 PM Updated: Monday, May 28, 2012, 7:12 AM Michael K. McIntyre By Michael K. McIntyre CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Ronald McDonald House is about to get an extreme home makeover. Ronald McDonald House provides a place for the families of sick kids to say when their children have extended stays, or are receiving long-term treatments, at local hospitals. More than 1,200 families use it each year and many more use Ronald McDonald Family Rooms inside local children's hospitals, according to Executive Director Craig Wilson. An ongoing capital campaign has raised $8 million to pay for an expansion of the building on East 105th Street and Euclid Avenue that would create 17 new guest rooms. (The 37 rooms now are in such demand that 600 families per year are turned away.) Two new common areas would be created and the recreation room would be greatly expanded. Groundbreaking is set for June 5. http://www.cleveland.com/tipoff/index.ssf/2012/05/ronald_mcdonald_house_is_set_t.html

Statler Arms Apartments in downtown Cleveland changes hands, but pension fund unlikely to keep it Published: Thursday, May 24, 2012, 6:00 PM Updated: Thursday, May 24, 2012, 7:01 PM Michelle Jarboe McFee, The Plain Dealer By Michelle Jarboe McFee, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A California pension fund has acquired the Statler Arms Apartments in downtown Cleveland. But the new owner won't necessarily hang onto the property. The 295-unit apartment building, a onetime historic hotel at 1127 Euclid Ave., changed hands Wednesday. Public records related to the deal don't include a purchase price, but Cuyahoga County sets the market value of the property at $9.5 million. The Statler was part of an $820 million transaction between the California State Teachers' Retirement System and defunct financial giant Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. The pension fund said Wednesday that it has purchased Lehman's stake in 14 apartment complexes, including the Statler; development sites; and Pennsylvania real estate company LCOR Inc. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2012/05/statler_arms_apartments_in_dow.html

Cleveland: Wind Turbine Construction News
Siemens Energy interested in Lake Erie wind turbine project Published: Tuesday, May 22, 2012, 7:42 PM = By John Funk, The Plain Dealer The development company formed to build a pilot wind farm in Lake Erie is switching to smaller, more efficient turbines, a move that could make the project more practical. The idea is to whittle down the construction cost in order to produce electricity that can be sold to utilities at a price closer to wholesale prices -- or at least closer to price of power from land-based wind turbines, said Lorry Wagner, president of the nonprofit Lake Erie Energy Development Corp., or LEEDCo. The project, first proposed in 2010, bogged down because utilities found the power too expensive. Supporters hope cheaper power will jumpstart the effort. Gone are the gargantuan General Electric turbines that would have required equally extraordinary foundations and very large, specially built construction barges to put up the towers. Each of five GE turbines would have generated up to 4 megawatts of electricity. But the cost of the power would have been close to 30 cents per kilowatt hour - or five times as expensive as current wholesale prices. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2012/05/siemens_energy_interested_in_l.html

A timeline and location update for Accent: This September, chef Scott Kim will open his second restaurant in Cleveland. The Pan-Asian restaurant, to be named Accent, will be housed in one of the new buildings as part of the much-anticipated Uptown development at Euclid and E 115th, near University Circle. Accent will reside in the unique egg-shaped enclosed space at the end of the corridor adjacent to the Cleveland Institute of Art. ^ Thanks for the report. What was the reason for Toledo not putting the Casino Downtown? I agree that near the Mudhens stadium and near the new loft conversions would have created that multiplier effect.
