Cleveland: University Circle: Centric Development (formerly Intesa)
The 700-car parking garage is behind both towers and not visible from the street. I can only see this as a positive thing. It doesn't disrupt any of the street-lining retail and provides covered parking for residents. So what's the big deal? Is this what people have a problem with? That second garage with the skybridge across Mayfield... OK, reasons to gripe. But either way i don't see this as the end of the world if it gets built as is. It's still a new train station, residential, retail, student housing, and needed parking all into one that UC and Cleveland desparately could use.

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
Cannot believe we missed this?? New hotel-office complex one of possible improvements in Cleveland Hopkins' new master plan Published: Thursday, April 14, 2011, 7:26 PM Updated: Friday, April 15, 2011, 8:12 AM By Mark Gillispie, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A new hotel and an above-ground connection from Concourse C to Concourse D are two of the highlights of a master plan developed for Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. The plan shows a hotel and office complex that is connected to the main terminal, the short-term parking garage and the Regional Transit Authority terminal. The plan estimates the cost of the hotel at $82 million, which would be borne by the developers. Airport officials unveiled the 25-year master plan, which would cost $1.6 billion to complete, during a public workshop Thursday at the airport. It is essentially a wish list of airport improvements developed by the city, airlines and related businesses. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/04/new_hotel-office_complex_one_o.html?mobRedir=false

Nope. No tower. But sandwiches!!! Potbelly Sandwich Shop to set up shop in downtown Cleveland By STAN BULLARD 2:00 pm, April 13, 2012 A Potbelly Sandwich Shop is bound for 515 Euclid Ave. in downtown Cleveland by early June as the Chicago-based, 200-store chain starts to chomp into the Northeast Ohio food market. The chain, which offers handmade sandwiches and made-to-order salads, will employ about 25 people at its Cleveland store, said Potbelly spokeswoman Ann Aldrich. The company decorates its stores with local artifacts and offers live music at lunchtime to create a “hang out” atmosphere. Potbelly will be part of the storefronts in a parking garage at East Sixth Street and Euclid, where it will be the first occupant in a corner location that has been empty since 2006, when construction of the garage was finished. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20120413/FREE/120419910/0/FRONTPAGE

Cleveland: Immigration News & Discussion
uh-oh...Global Cleveland being called out! I tend to agree. Cleveland must be better at attracting immigrants By RICHARD HERMAN and ROBERTO TORRES 4:30 am, April 16, 2012 In the recent past, Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson and Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald have expressed support for welcoming immigrants, but they apparently have delegated that task to Global Cleveland, which does not seem to be doing the job. Global Cleveland recently opened its offices on Euclid Avenue near Public Square to much fanfare. Those of us who worked for years to create an international welcome center are so far unimpressed. Now we are at an inflection point. We hope Global Cleveland can recapture the community-driven conversation focused on creating an immigrant-friendly city. To do this, it will need an urban revitalization strategy, as well as an appeal to Latinos, the most powerful demographic force in America today. We should welcome all immigrants, even those who don't have advanced degrees. Most of our ancestors arrived in America with only grit and determination. Many of them started businesses and raised children who accomplished great things. We should keep this in mind, as we prepare to demolish thousands of abandoned but inhabitable homes that could house Cleveland's new immigrant families and taxpayers, but instead seem slated to become urban farms. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20120416/SUB1/304169995

East Cleveland: Development and News
Feel good story of the day. Couple restores 1905 home in East Cleveland: Full House (video) Evelyn Kiefer-Roulet grew up in North Olmsted, but she wishes she had grown up in a place more like her current neighborhood in East Cleveland. Evelyn and her husband, Norm Roulet, rescued and updated a graceful and roomy 1905 Tudor Revival off Euclid Avenue. Rain barrels, the herb garden and the dogs, chickens and rabbits are all evidence that they have put down roots, with panache. The couple paid $35,000 for the house and spent $200,000 on renovations. "We could never sell it for what we paid for it, but we have a really nice house," Evelyn said. She is assistant to the director for the John and Mildred Putnam Sculpture Collection at Case Western Reserve University. http://www.cleveland.com/insideout/index.ssf/2012/04/couple_restores_1905_home_in_e.html

How about "E.6th Alleyway" or "E.6th Arcade" There is a positive vibe with lower Euclid Ave, especially E.4th. This rebranding could play off this.

The Official *I Love Cleveland* Thread
The US Travel Editor of Lonely Planet will be checking out Cleveland for the first time tomorrow according to his blog. On his agenda -- Euclid Tavern and kayaking the Cuyahoga. Check it out: I've Never Been to Cleveland In January, the Atlantic did a survey of an issue that often overlaps with my feeling of why travel is so important: perception. Often we find outside perceptions of a place immediately burst when you go. Things like, oh, that in the '90s, that Americans should be leery of traveling in Vietnam, travel to places like Colombia or Mexico is too dangerous to consider, that all Russians or Parisians or New Yorkers are unfriendly. All you have to do is go to know better. The survey looked at the 50 biggest cities in the US and which had the most positive and negative associations. The positive 10 included lots of coastal cities with Seattle at #1. The negative list predictably ran through the Rust Belt, with three Ohio cities in the top 10, and Cleveland at #3 (behind #1 Detroit and #2 Birmingham). I wonder how many of the people surveyed had been to those places? I've never been to Cleveland, the city Liz Lemon linked with sandwiches in a '30 Rock' episode and has been misspelled for years (it's named after Moses Cleaveland), but always have wanted to. I go tomorrow to attend the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony this weekend and see some rock sites. http://reidontravel.blogspot.com/2012/04/ive-never-been-to-cleveland.html

The SmartHouse is sold! Cool back story of a relocating couple too: PNC SmartHome, a museum exhibit turned residence, sells to Maryland couple for $331,000 (slideshow) Published: Wednesday, April 11, 2012, 8:15 AM By Michelle Jarboe McFee, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A museum exhibit dedicated to saving and recycling energy has, itself, found new life -- as the Cleveland home of a Maryland couple. Martin and Jocelyn Schaffer came to Cleveland in February for a weekend visit with their son Michael and his family, who live in University Heights. By the end of the trip, the couple had a deal to buy one of Northeast Ohio's most unusual houses, a three-bedroom colonial that started its life next to the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and landed on a vacant lot on Wade Park Avenue. On March 21, the Schaffers bought the former PNC SmartHome, paying $331,000 for a house that cost more than twice that to build and move. During its four-month run as a museum exhibit, the house attracted nearly 10,000 visitors and garnered national attention as a hands-on demonstration of innovative building techniques. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2012/04/pnc_smarthome_one_of_northeast.html
