Cleveland Clinic in this week's Business Week: McDonald’s in Hospitals Targeted by Group Seeking Fast Food End By Michelle Fay Cortez on April 11, 2012 The Cleveland Clinic in Ohio doesn’t hire smokers, banned trans fats from the food it serves and took sugary soft drinks out of vending machines as part of an effort to emphasize the health in health care. McDonald’s Corp. (MCD) (MCD) may be going next. Corporate Accountability International chided 20 health- care facilities, including the Cleveland Clinic and seven children’s hospitals, for having the fast-food chain on their sites. The consumer group urged the hospitals in a letter yesterday to end their contracts with McDonald’s and “stop fostering a food environment that promotes harm, not health.” McDonald’s, the world’s largest restaurant operator, has introduced items including apple slices, yogurt and salads to provide healthy offerings to customers concerned about obesity and nutrition. The changes won’t be enough to keep the restaurant at the Cleveland Clinic, one of the nation’s top- rated hospitals, when its 20-year lease soon expires, said Eileen Sheil, a clinic spokeswoman. “We feel as a health-care institution we should walk the talk,” Sheil said today in a telephone interview. “We are doing everything in our power to do that.” McDonald’s offers a variety of options for meals that contain less than one-third the daily recommended levels of total fat, sodium and calories, said Danya Proud, a spokeswoman for the Oak Brook, Illinois-based company. Ivory led Peabody High to two Louisiana state titles. As a senior he averaged 15.0 points and 5.0 assists on a team that finished 35-2. He was a three-year starter for a program that advanced to three state title games, winning two, and his Peabody teams were a combined 103-5. Already added to the eight players returning from last season are 6-11 Chris Brown, a transfer from Oregon State; and 6-1 Trey Lewis, a former Plain Dealer Player of the Year at Garfield Heights High who is a transfer from Penn State. Lewis will have to sit out a year before he is eligible to play. Cleveland Browns, city reach agreement on repairs 10:00 PM, Apr 4, 2012 CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Browns and the City of Cleveland announced today that the court case involving a contract to perform capital repairs at Cleveland Browns Stadium has been resolved. Two competing bidders on the project have agreed to team up, allowing the work to go forward immediately. "Today's agreement assures us that the work can be done quickly and at a reasonable cost," said Ken Silliman, Chief of Staff to Mayor Frank Jackson. "The agreement also preserves the City's position on local participation that contractors are a reflection of our community." Luck appears to be on the Cleveland Orchestra's side as it departs this week for an excursion to the West Coast. With a stop in Las Vegas on the itinerary, surely the prevalence of the number seven in the tour's background is a good omen, a harbinger of musical success for the orchestra and music director Franz Welser-Most. "It's pretty exciting, and an extraordinary opportunity," said Gary Ginstling, the orchestra's general manager, speaking of the seven-day trip through California and Nevada that begins with a concert on Sunday, April 15. Most exciting, for Ginstling, is the tour's first leg: two concerts in Davies Symphony Hall, home of his former employer, the San Francisco Symphony. constantino's market set to open at uptown in university circle THURSDAY, APRIL 05, 2012 When Costas Mavromichaelis opened Constantino's Market in downtown Cleveland, he knew that he was an urban pioneer. Downtown residents and businesses had been crying out for a small, full-service grocery store for years, yet no entrepreneur had been willing to take the plunge. Eight years later, Constantino's Market on W. 9th Street is still going strong, and Mavromichaelis is hoping for another shot in the arm when the Horseshoe Casino opens this year and the Medical Mart and Convention Center open next year. The growing demand for downtown apartments also bodes well, he says. "This is an important and developing area of Cleveland, and the density of and demand for housing because of the university and hospitals make it attractive," he says. "There's been a lack of shopping amenities in University Circle, but that's changing, and the Uptown project will make the area even more attractive." Mavromichaelis has also recruited his daughter and son-in-law, Anna Mavromichaelis and Andrew Revy, to move from Chicago to Cleveland to work in the business.
