  1. Cleveland Clinic in this week's Business Week: McDonald’s in Hospitals Targeted by Group Seeking Fast Food End By Michelle Fay Cortez on April 11, 2012 The Cleveland Clinic in Ohio doesn’t hire smokers, banned trans fats from the food it serves and took sugary soft drinks out of vending machines as part of an effort to emphasize the health in health care. McDonald’s Corp. (MCD) (MCD) may be going next. Corporate Accountability International chided 20 health- care facilities, including the Cleveland Clinic and seven children’s hospitals, for having the fast-food chain on their sites. The consumer group urged the hospitals in a letter yesterday to end their contracts with McDonald’s and “stop fostering a food environment that promotes harm, not health.” McDonald’s, the world’s largest restaurant operator, has introduced items including apple slices, yogurt and salads to provide healthy offerings to customers concerned about obesity and nutrition. The changes won’t be enough to keep the restaurant at the Cleveland Clinic, one of the nation’s top- rated hospitals, when its 20-year lease soon expires, said Eileen Sheil, a clinic spokeswoman. “We feel as a health-care institution we should walk the talk,” Sheil said today in a telephone interview. “We are doing everything in our power to do that.” McDonald’s offers a variety of options for meals that contain less than one-third the daily recommended levels of total fat, sodium and calories, said Danya Proud, a spokeswoman for the Oak Brook, Illinois-based company. Nutrition and ingredient information is available and the company continues to assess and improve menu choices, she said in an e-mail. http://www.businessweek.com/news/2012-04-11/mcdonald-s-in-hospitals-targeted-by-group-seeking-fast-food-end
  2. Rock week shines light on downtown Cleveland businesses new and old Posted: 9:09 PM Last Updated: 52 minutes ago CLEVELAND - There are 4,000 hotel rooms in downtown Cleveland and University Circle. Positively Cleveland said they're all sold out for this Saturday night and nearly full for the weekend. This week's induction ceremony will generate more than $13 million for the downtown Cleveland economy and create positive global media attention that would have cost $20 million to buy, according to Positively Cleveland. About 61,000 people work in the hotel, restaurant and tourism industry in Cuyahoga County and more than 163,000 in northeast Ohio. The excitement around Cleveland's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction week will attract tourists from around the country and the world to Cleveland businesses. Mike Rubin hopes some of them will discover his landmark Cleveland music store. Prospect Music opened next to the Loop Lounge in 1941. http://www.newsnet5.com/dpp/entertainment/rock_hall/rock-week-shines-light-on-downtown-cleveland-businesses-new-and-old

  4. I'm not upset that we lost. I'm bothered that we didn't use our available (easy) resources to promote. It would have taken 5 min for some of these agencies to give a plug. El paso had all the news networks and thier paper promoting the day before and the entire time...
  5. I was able to vote 3 times using my iphone, google chrome, and explorer.
  6. Wonder why the Cleveland media is not supporting this at all. We could easily be crushing it right now. El Paso has media support across the board.
  7. Reminder -- today is the day! El paso is going all out. Their visitors bereau and even the el paso times are helping. C'mon plain dealer/ Cleveland.com... Where u at???

Will the posts that occurred after 10 PM be salvaged?? We seem to be missing a decent amount.
  9. ^you are right, thanks for posting. El Paso has a massive social networking culture apparently. If we can get more votes against them, we'll win it all. I'd recommend emailing, facebooking, as many news outlets and tv stations tonight as possible. Also, major Facebook pages... Pro teams, Rock hall, museums, csu, case, Cleveland clinic, etc
  10. Not sure where this could go ... But check out this guy's honest review of Cleveland: http://artdock.net/days-cleveland/

Parker Hannifin buys 15.6 acres west of its corporate headquarters in Mayfield Heights Published: Friday, April 06, 2012, 5:30 PM Updated: Friday, April 06, 2012, 5:34 PM By Michelle Jarboe McFee, The Plain Dealer MAYFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Parker Hannifin Corp. has purchased 15.6 acres just west of its corporate headquarters in Mayfield Heights. Property records show that the publicly traded manufacturer paid $4.25 million for the vacant land, in the Landerbrook Office Park. The acquisition increases Parker's land-holdings in the area by 50 percent. "We do not have an immediate or specific plan for the use of the land," said Aidan Gormley, a company spokesman. "I think we just wanted to make sure that we have land available to build on, should we need it, in the future." http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2012/04/parker_hannifin_buys_156_acres.html

Two competing bidders on the project have agreed to team up, allowing the work to go forward immediately. 18. Cleveland Orchestra to embark on West Coast tour, with prominent stops in San Francisco and Las Vegas Published: Friday, April 06, 2012, 1:28 PM Updated: Friday, April 06, 2012, 2:36 PM By Zachary Lewis, The Plain Dealer The Cleveland Orchestra will perform Saturday, April 21, at the Smith Center for the Performing Arts, a brand-new hall downtown in Las Vegas. Luck appears to be on the Cleveland Orchestra's side as it departs this week for an excursion to the West Coast. With a stop in Las Vegas on the itinerary, surely the prevalence of the number seven in the tour's background is a good omen, a harbinger of musical success for the orchestra and music director Franz Welser-Most. "It's pretty exciting, and an extraordinary opportunity," said Gary Ginstling, the orchestra's general manager, speaking of the seven-day trip through California and Nevada that begins with a concert on Sunday, April 15. Most exciting, for Ginstling, is the tour's first leg: two concerts in Davies Symphony Hall, home of his former employer, the San Francisco Symphony. There, the orchestra and Welser-Most will roll seven at least two more times, playing a venue they last visited seven years ago and headlining a series featuring the "Big Seven" American orchestras. http://www.cleveland.com/musicdance/index.ssf/2012/04/cleveland_orchestra_to_embark.html
  19. Thanks Rolling Stones...I think... Cleveland Revs Up for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Festivities The Midwestern city prepares for the economic and social impact of 10 days as the center of the rock world Steve Schimoler, owner and chef at Cleveland, Ohio's Crop Bistro & Bar, has been working hard to create the perfect rock-themed menu for his restaurant, with the hopes of attracting some of the rock stars, record industry executives, and music fans who will flood into town for the 27th annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony later this month. He is particularly proud of a cocktail he calls the "Sugaree" (shaken not stirred) – in honor of the Rock Hall's new Grateful Dead exhibit. Schimoler is one of the many Cleveland business owners eager to contribute to the 10-day celebration of rock & roll that began April 5th, and culminates with the induction ceremony at Public Hall on April 14th. As Valarie McCall, Cleveland's chief of government affairs and a member of board of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, puts it, "Everyone is catching that Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony fever." For a Midwestern city that has been hit hard by the country's economic recession, mortgage crisis, and, of course, the departure of LeBron James, it is difficult to overstate the positive impact such a celebration has on the economy, culture, and morale of Cleveland, with inductees like the Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Guns N' Roses, The Faces, and many other celebrities coming to town. 20. Can someone post the Uptown article from yesterday? I'm on my IPhone right now and it's difficult to format.
  21. constantino's market set to open at uptown in university circle THURSDAY, APRIL 05, 2012 When Costas Mavromichaelis opened Constantino's Market in downtown Cleveland, he knew that he was an urban pioneer. Downtown residents and businesses had been crying out for a small, full-service grocery store for years, yet no entrepreneur had been willing to take the plunge. Eight years later, Constantino's Market on W. 9th Street is still going strong, and Mavromichaelis is hoping for another shot in the arm when the Horseshoe Casino opens this year and the Medical Mart and Convention Center open next year. The growing demand for downtown apartments also bodes well, he says. "This is an important and developing area of Cleveland, and the density of and demand for housing because of the university and hospitals make it attractive," he says. "There's been a lack of shopping amenities in University Circle, but that's changing, and the Uptown project will make the area even more attractive." Mavromichaelis has also recruited his daughter and son-in-law, Anna Mavromichaelis and Andrew Revy, to move from Chicago to Cleveland to work in the business. His daughter has helped him to run the business and open new locations, while Revy will soon manage the University Circle location. "My daughter was working as an accountant in Chicago, but she grew up in the business, coming to the Clifton store from the time she was seven or eight years old," says Mavromichaelis. "I guess she never got it out of her system." http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/devnews/constantinosmarket040512.aspx
