ODOT will apply for $120 million to help pay for second Inner Belt Bridge Published: Friday, February 24, 2012, 5:45 AM Tom Breckenridge, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The state will seek a $120 million federal grant to hasten construction of a second Inner Belt Bridge. As expected, the Ohio Department of Transportation will apply for a big chunk of the $500 million that the U.S. Department of Transportation is dangling for new roads and bridges nationwide. The competitive grant program is among a number of sources that state officials and local Congressional leaders hope to tap in paying for the $350 million bridge project. ODOT stunned local officials last month with a draft funding plan that delayed money for the new, Interstate 90 span until 2023. Plans had called for the new bridge to open by 2016. It would replace the existing Inner Belt span and pair with the new bridge already under construction in the Cuyahoga River Valley. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2012/02/odot_applies_for_120_million_t.html#incart_hbx

  5. Cleveland State University opens new Arts Campus in PlayhouseSquare Published: Thursday, February 23, 2012, 10:00 PM Karen Farkas, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland State University's new Arts Campus, located on two floors of a building in the heart of the city's theater district, is inspiring student actors, dancers and artists who are reveling in the clean, light-splashed space and their affiliation with the Cleveland Play House and PlayhouseSquare. Moving CSU's programs nine blocks west to the Middough Building on East 13th Street is the final piece in the three institutions' partnership that also led to the relocation of the Play House and the renovation of the Allen Theatre, a 2,500-seat movie house built in 1921, into three theaters. Classes began Jan. 17 and CSU's play "Marisol" opened in the Allen Theatre Complex's Second Stage on Thursday. CSU will hold a gala for 350 invited guests Friday night to mark the opening of the Arts Campus. "We are the only undergraduate program in the nation to work side by side with a professional theater company," he said, referring to the Play House. "And we are officially a resident company of PlayhouseSquare." http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2012/02/cleveland_state_university_ope.html
  6. Coffee, cafes, cupcakes, hotels and even more new businesses opening in downtown Cleveland Posted: 02/23/2012 Last Updated: 59 minutes ago By: Paul Kiska, newsnet5.com CLEVELAND - The countdown to Cleveland's new casino is on, and that's sparking other business. When can you remember seeing so many construction workers in downtown Cleveland? "I was born and raised here. I’ve lived other places, but I came back to Cleveland because there's a love for this city that's in us that you just can't explain," said Mickey DeAngelo. DeAngelo, a chef for years, is now opening his own place, Nexus Cafe and Coffeehouse at 627 Prospect Avenue. Not far from Cleveland's new casino, which is already triggering construction of a new hotel, restaurants and more shopping is expected. "In the next five years, Cleveland is not going to look anything like it does now. This whole block is changing from here to University Circle -- its resurgence and for us it's a perfect time to come in," he said. DeAngelo is not alone. Cleveland Chef Chris Hodgson, who was featured on The Food Channel, is opening a restaurant next door to Nexus on Prospect Avenue and Colossal Cupcake is going in on nearby Euclid Avenue. 11. :D Justice Scalia likes the Cleveland lifestyle Blog entry: February 22, 2012, 10:34 am | Author: SCOTT SUTTELL He has a job for life, but if Antonin Scalia is looking for a post-Supreme Court career, maybe Cleveland can enlist him as a pitchman. Speaking to law students recently at the University of Chicago, where he once taught, Justice Scalia “urged the future lawyers to look to join firms with a more relaxed attitude, especially those in out of the way locales,” according to this blog from The Washington Post. According to this short account from The ABA Journal, Justice Scalia had this to say: “Try to find a practice that enables you to maintain a human existence, time for your family, your church or synagogue, community…Boy Scouts, Little League.” He went on to say that he began his career at Jones Day in Cleveland. “You should look for a place like that. I'm sure they're still out there. Maybe you have to go to Cleveland.” http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20120222/BLOGS03/120229953
