Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
Momentum? Cleveland lakefront plan could shore up riverbanks Published: Wednesday, February 15, 2012, 2:00 PM Thomas Ott, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Mayor Frank Jackson's lakefront development plan could also benefit the Cuyahoga River. The plan, which continued moving through City Council on Wednesday, is supposed to make it easy on investors by letting them clearly know who -- the city or the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority -- controls which areas. As part of the delineation, the port would take responsibility for maintaining 12 miles of riverbank -- 6 miles on each side of the navigable channel running inland from Lake Erie. The city formerly handled the task, with mixed results. Some property owners have kept their retaining walls in solid condition, while others haven't been as diligent. "There are ones that literally haven't been touched in a hundred years," Councilman Martin Keane, chairman of the Aviation and Transportation Committee, said in an interview. While the port would control the lakefront from Cleveland Browns Stadium west to the river, the city would manage the stretch from the stadium east to the far edge of Burke Lakefront Airport. Drawings for the city's portion show restaurants, a hotel, offices, shops and a marina. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2012/02/cleveland_council_committees_o.html

Cleveland: Cleveland Museum of Art Expansion / Renovation
It looks like at the end of this year, University Circle will be seeing a HUGE influx of contemporary art with the MOCA and the east wing reopening about the same time. Cleveland Museum of Art to close contemporary galleries for 6 months to fix leaks, revamp art installation Published: Wednesday, February 15, 2012, 5:20 AM Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Even before its $350 million expansion and renovation is finished, the Cleveland Museum of Art is closing its new East Wing contemporary galleries for six months to fix interior leaks caused by condensation. The good news, the museum says, is that it’s using the hiatus to speed up efforts to devote more space, time and energy than ever before to contemporary art. “Out of misfortune comes opportunity,” David Franklin, the museum’s director, said in an interview last week, describing the leaks, the museum’s response and how they connect to the new thrust in contemporary art. Starting Monday, March 5, the museum will close the 3-year-old East Wing contemporary galleries for six months to replace insulation that failed, causing condensation and drips just inside the windows of art-conservation labs on the floor below. http://www.cleveland.com/arts/index.ssf/2012/02/cleveland_museum_of_art_will_c.html#incart_hbx

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
Cleveland City Council committee OKs hotel loan, debates walkway Published: Tuesday, February 14, 2012, 4:03 PM Updated: Wednesday, February 15, 2012, 1:23 AM Thomas Ott, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A City Council committee has endorsed a $1 million loan for a hotel near the site of a new convention center and medical mart, but the owners' suggestion of building a connecting walkway met some resistance. The city loan is just a piece of the $73 million project financing. The city would forgive a fifth of the principal if the hotel has at least 185 employees after two years; the owners would repay the remaining $800,000 over 15 years at 3 percent interest. "This project is very important in regard to the medical mart and convention center," city Economic Development Director Tracey Nichols told the Community and Economic Development Committee before the vote Tuesday. "We feel it is one of the top priorities in the city of Cleveland." Sage Hospitality partner Ken Geist said the project will proceed with or without approval of an enclosed walkway over East 6th Street, but he said the walkway would sustain the appeal of the convention center and medical mart through the winter. The bridge would link the facilities via historic Public Auditorium. Some council members also have said they are worried that a bridge would jeopardize the auditorium's status as a historic building. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2012/02/cleveland_council_committee_ok.html

Cleveland: Local Media News & Discussion
Cleveland PD seemingly turning the corner?? Our 2012 agenda for Northeast Ohio: editorial Published: Saturday, February 11, 2012, 8:37 PM The Plain Dealer Editorial Board This should be a big year for Greater Cleveland and for the resilient city at its core. Ideas, innovations and investments that have been incubating for a decade are ready to blossom. The challenge for this community -- and the centerpiece of our editorial agenda for the coming year-- must be to bring those efforts to maturity, link them in ways that reinforce progress and maintain our momentum toward a brighter future. The concrete signs of progress are undeniable: the nearly complete Horseshoe Casino on Public Square; construction cranes at the convention center and medical mart complex, the Flats East Bank project and University Circle; construction crews working on the first of the new Inner Belt bridges and laying the groundwork for continued development around Cleveland State University. Demand is surging for downtown housing, out-of-town firms are eyeing Midtown and University Circle's growth is spilling over into East Cleveland. Toward that end, The Plain Dealer and PNC Bank will partner with the public broadcasters at Ideastream and the Cleveland Leadership Center to sponsor a series of discussions based on this agenda. The first, on March 12 at PlayhouseSquare, will feature Paul Levy, CEO of Center City Philadelphia. Over two decades, his nonprofit group has helped spur a renaissance in downtown Philadelphia. Cleveland's investment boom gives us a similar window of opportunity to build a vibrant, connected core once the cranes have gone away -- you already can see pockets of what could be on East Fourth Street or in Ohio City -- and we need to talk about how. http://www.cleveland.com/opinion/index.ssf/2012/02/our_2012_agenda_for_northeast.html

Cleveland 2030 to Foster Energy Efficiency in Downtown Building District By Eric Hamilton, Staff Reporter Published: Thursday, February 9, 2012 Updated: Friday, February 10, 2012 02:02 Architecture 2030, a non-profit organization dedicated to reducing the environmental impact of the building sector, is working with the Cleveland chapter of the American Institute of Architects to bring a new eye to downtown building projects. In order to reduce the energy consumption of new and existing buildings, the Cleveland 2030 District will bring together architects and property owners in Cleveland to meet new efficiency goals aimed at promoting a healthy building sector and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The Cleveland 2030 District will be the second such area in the country, following the recent success of the Seattle 2030 District, which has brought together property owners, businesses, and utility companies to work toward a reduction in energy consumption. The Cleveland 2030 District does not yet have distinct boundaries, but the group will soon begin recruiting founding members to commit to the district goals. Case Western Reserve University may play a role in Cleveland 2030 in the future, as the group intends to make University Circle a Cleveland 2030 District. "We have identified University Circle as a possible future 2030 District, so in that instance we would hope CWRU would sign on as a founding member," Reidy said. http://www.cwruobserver.com/news/cleveland-2030-to-foster-energy-efficiency-in-downtown-building-district-1.2775003#.TzVMLvmUVoE

Cleveland: Case Western Reserve University News & Info
Word on campus is that clinical trials on humans will begin in the next few weeks -- they are further ahead than most people think. Case Western Reserve University researchers use skin cancer drug to reverse Alzheimer's symptoms in mice Published: Thursday, February 09, 2012, 6:00 PM Updated: Friday, February 10, 2012, 8:54 AM Brie Zeltner, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Case Western Reserve University researchers have found what may be a new treatment for early-stage Alzheimer's disease. The drug rapidly clears out the sticky plaques that build up in the brains of those with the disease and improves memory and thinking. But they caution that their stunning results -- total plaque clearance and symptom improvement in a short 72 hours -- need to be put in perspective: They've only tested the drug -- an already approved cancer medication called bexarotene -- in mice. It may be years before the treatment is ready for people, if it proves to work the same way in human trials. Alzheimer's disease, the most common cause of dementia, affects 5.4 million Americans and is newly diagnosed every 69 seconds, according to the Alzheimer's Association. There is no cure, and the few available treatments do nothing to stop its progression. http://www.cleveland.com/healthfit/index.ssf/2012/02/case_western_reserve_universit_5.html

Cleveland: Cash Mobs
'Cash mob' hits Cleveland Heights' Big Fun Published: Friday, February 10, 2012, 7:30 AM Brian Byrne, Sun News By Brian Byrne, Sun News Cleveland Heights drew national attention last June when a 'flash mob' of unruly teens disrupted the annual Coventry Street Arts Fair, resulting in a slew of arrests and the contentious enactment of special minor curfew hours in many of the city's business districts. Coventry Village was the site of another mob last night, but this was of the 'cash' variety. An enthusiastic 'cash mob' gathered in front of The Grog Shop concert venue at Coventry Road and Euclid Heights Boulevard to, as organizer Andrew Samtoy said, help "get people back into the habit of supporting their local businesses." After Samtoy announced the cash mob 'rules' - participants must spend $20 and meet three new people - the crowd of mostly 20 and 30-somethings made their way down the bustling Coventry strip to the night's target business; Big Fun Toy Store. After the last customer was served, and the mob had made its way back up the street to La Cave Du Vin for a celebratory drink, Presser reported $1454 in sales in 75 minutes. http://www.cleveland.com/cleveland-heights/index.ssf/2012/02/cash_mob_hits_cleveland_height.html
