  3. Northeast Ohio banks buck the trend by doing a lot of hiring Published: Friday, February 03, 2012, 6:00 PM Updated: Saturday, February 04, 2012, 3:36 AM Teresa Dixon Murray, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio — While most banks nationwide continue to cut jobs, banks in Northeast Ohio are on a hiring spree. Banks of all sizes -- from KeyCorp to Huntington Bank to Third Federal -- are hiring dozens or even hundreds of workers in some cases. And even mega-banks that aren't based here, such as Chase, are creating jobs locally that really could be anywhere in the country. KeyCorp, for example, hired 850 employees in Northeast Ohio in 2011, and it has 390 open positions covering 150 types of jobs. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2012/02/local_banks_buck_the_trend_by.html

^ I bet Steve Litt giggled too. Even under construction, the new Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland packs architectural thrills in a very tight package Published: Friday, February 03, 2012, 2:00 PM Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer The new Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland in University Circle is a Rubik’s Cube of a building packed with visual and spatial experiences unlike any other structure in Cleveland. A visit to the museum-in-the-making — now on time and on budget and scheduled to open Friday, Oct. 5 — shows that MOCA is shaping up as an architectural thrill ride. Located at the point of the triangle formed by Euclid Avenue and Mayfield Road, the building has slanted windows that make the city outside look askew, shiny facades that lean forward or back, and a staircase with a high landing that overlooks a dizzying view straight down to the lobby 55 feet below. http://www.cleveland.com/arts/index.ssf/2012/02/even_under_construction_the_ne.html
  7. Scranton Peninsula anyone??? Forest City plans to shed most of its land, in shift away from volatile home-building business Published: Thursday, February 02, 2012, 8:00 PM Updated: Friday, February 03, 2012, 12:49 PM Michelle Jarboe McFee, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Forest City Enterprises Inc. built an empire of office buildings, shopping centers and apartments on the foundation of buying and selling land for homes. Now the real estate company, based in Cleveland, hopes to exit the land business, shedding undeveloped chunks of subdivisions in Ohio and other states. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2012/02/forest_city_plans_to_shed_most.html

And it has begun :) From the MOCA Facebook page: The exterior panels are beginning to be installed on MOCA’s new building
  9. It seems to be part of the masterplan indeed: Eventually, PlayhouseSquare would like to see new residential construction, atop historic buildings at East 13th and Euclid and in place of a parking lot across from the Palace Theatre. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2011/12/playhousesquare_to_sell_downto.html

^ and yes those are windows cut into the cladding. The glass has been installed.
  11. I didn't realize the first round is not held at the host city. So similar to last year with Milwaukee being the #1 seed, Cleveland would host rounds 2, 3, and 4, correct? EDIT: nevermind, answered my own question -- thanks. http://horizonleague.org/2011mbbchampionship
  12. The first-place team in the Horizon hosts the tournament? There is no fixed spot? Correct. For whatever reason, that is how the Horizon League operates for basketball -- the number one seed is the host.
  13. Cross-posted from the Cleveland Events page since it effects both categories: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,22979.0.html Cleveland is already hosting the Men and Women MAC Basketball tournaments from Mar 7-10, and now there seems to be a great chance we will host the Men's Horizon League Tournament from Feb 28-Mar 6...that is if CSU can stay in 1st Place. Think about it...that would mean over two dozen college teams staying and playing Downtown from Feb 28-Mar 10! Not to mention, all the thousands of traveling fans from all over. EDIT: Even noticed something else too. Both the Cavs and Monsters have games during this stretch. Downtown is going to be rockin with sports fans during this time period...! Cleveland Cavs: Feb 28: vs Boston Celtics Mar 2: vs Chicago Bulls Mar 5: vs Utah Jazz Lake Erie Monsters: Mar 3: vs Charlotte Mar 4: vs Charlotte

  15. Quick ignorant question --is there a free attendance portion anywhere?
  16. "The challenge is to not be a 'theater restaurant,'" says Bruell, "but to be a restaurant for regular diners who happen to be in the Theater District. I believe this is one of the next neighborhoods to pop," he adds of PlayhouseSquare. 17. Massive digging in the "Alley" today. That poor UPS store will be closed Saturday to relocate to a temporary location on Mayfield sharing/next to that Huntington Bank branch. All the other storefronts along the Triangle Tower apartments are undergoing massive, gutted renovations (much needed to say the least).
  18. ^ KJP, this could be a good thing. Check it out: Stokes Corridor: This corridor consists of a series of surface parking lots that are primarily owned by UCI along both sides of Stokes Boulevard, between Carnegie and Cedar Avenues. It is envisioned as a future site for mixed-use office, research and development, and/or incubator space to better serve the proximate medical institutions. UCI has hired a real estate consultant to perform a market feasibility study and site planning to better understand the market demand and potential density for these types of uses. UCI is simultaneously working with neighboring Fairfax, the Cleveland Clinic, BioEnterprise, UH, and CWRU to acquire property and develop a master plan for the future development of this area. http://www.universitycircle.org/uci/development/strategic-investment-sites
  19. Some national respect: Cleveland State, Akron earn TV spots in BracketBuster matchups Published: Monday, January 30, 2012, 8:36 PM Updated: Monday, January 30, 2012, 8:36 PM Elton Alexander, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Both Cleveland State and Akron landed television games for their Feb. 18 BracketBuster matchups, which were announced Monday evening. But the pairings lack sizzle, and for CSU may not help in lifting its at-large NCAA tournament resume. CSU (18-4/RPI 54), the No. 1 team in the Horizon League, was paired with Drexel (17-5/RPI 87) out of the Colonial Athletic Association at 11 a.m., in the Wolstein Center on ESPNU. "I think this is a very good match-up for us," Vikings head coach Gary Waters said. "Drexel is one of the best teams in their conference. They have a lot of size inside, a very good group of guards and have been playing very well of late." http://www.cleveland.com/sports/college/index.ssf/2012/01/cleveland_state_akron_earn_tv.html

  21. Even our own media produces some head-scratchers and confusion... This company has since relocated to Shaker Hts, but used to be located at 10550 Carnegie Avenue Cleveland, OH when this story was written (building is demolished and now serves as parking for Tudor Arms). Please note where the Cleveland news channel designates the start-ups location in the opening paragraph : http://www.wkyc.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=133742
  22. More mention in the PD: Canada ferry redux seems to have greater potential: editorial Published: Sunday, January 29, 2012, 7:24 PM The Plain Dealer Editorial Board By The Plain Dealer Editorial Board The concept floats our boat: A ferry service between Cleveland and Port Stanley, Ontario. It's a smart idea that has been treading water for years, largely because of opposition from Port Stanley residents, who worried about the impact on their small, scenic harbor if it were dredged to handle big truck ferries. But now that local officials have taken control of the Port Stanley harbor, they're interested -- as long as the project starts small and doesn't involve dredging. Even with that restriction, a ferry is still an intriguing idea. Now officials at the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority and the municipality of Central Elgin, which includes Port Stanley, have selected Indiana-based HMS Global Maritime to determine the feasibility of ferrying people, cars and a limited number of trucks between the home of rock 'n' roll and the home of the world's largest perch. http://www.cleveland.com/opinion/index.ssf/2012/01/canada_ferry_redux_seems_to_ha.html

What a win! :-D Kyrie Irving's basket with 2.6 seconds left leads Cleveland Cavaliers to stunning win over Boston Celtics Published: Sunday, January 29, 2012, 8:24 PM Updated: Sunday, January 29, 2012, 11:44 PM Tom Reed, The Plain Dealer Boston -- Kyrie Irving stood patiently dribbling the basketball as the seconds ticked down, the Celtics' crowd chanted "De-fense" and the moment grew ripe with opportunity. The 19-year-old rookie had been in a similar spot a month earlier in Indiana, the ball in his hands, a victory within reach, only to see his left-handed layup rim out. But the bad memory never entered his mind, Irving said, as he waited for a high screen from teammate Anderson Varejao and an open look at the basket. Beneath the Celtics' 17 championship banners and in front of his father, Drederick, who sat at courtside, Irving drove the lane, spun between two defenders and grabbed a piece of Cavaliers lore. His spectacular left-handed layup with 2.6 seconds remaining capped an improbable comeback and delivered an 88-87 win before a stunned sellout crowd of 18,624 fans. http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2012/01/kyrie_irving_makes_last-second.html
  24. Now NOT wanting to live Downtown is what sounds odd to people...disclaimers must be made :) “Plus, many residents who work in and around Cleveland don’t necessarily want to live downtown, so they choose a suburb like North Royalton. It is a safe community and the price is right for the construction of a new home.” http://www.cleveland.com/north-royalton/index.ssf/2012/01/north_royalton_development_dep.html
