  4. Open Forum Updates on Latest University Circle Projects By Greg Bokar, Staff Reporter CWRU Observer Published: Thursday, January 26, 2012 Updated: Friday, January 27, 2012 01:01 In the midst of the chaos of finals, a group of about 30 community members gathered at Ford Auditorium on Dec. 7 to learn about the latest endeavors of Case Western Reserve University and the greater Univeristy Circle area. The audience in attendance at the "community dialogue meeting" included residents from the neighborhoods of Little Italy, Coventry, East Cleveland, and surrounding areas, as well as business professionals and contractors involved with University Circle projects. The vast majority of the dialogue focused on the new building projects around the campus and the circle, but the first part of the discussion tackled the ways in which CWRU students reach out to the community. http://www.cwruobserver.com/news/open-forum-updates-on-latest-university-circle-projects-1.2754594#.TyOe9_lc-So
  5. Fairly good article written by a Case student: University Circle Earns Top Marks in Beauty By Sage Schaff, Assistant News Edtior CWRU Observer Updated: Friday, January 27, 2012 01:01 The neighborhood of University Circle was founded in 1872, half a century before Cleveland rose to prominence as a major American industrial center. Originally, local wealthy families wanted to pool together money to create and preserve an area with a culture distinct enough to be noted around the world. Nearly 130 years later, it remains the cultural nucleus of a city that has risen and fallen and now badly needs a revival. Earlier this month, Forbes Magazine recognized University Circle as one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in the country in an article highlighting about a dozen small districts. "University Circle gives a feel of being in a city and not being in a city at the same time," said Cleveland Institute of Art professor Gary Sampson, referring to the area's relaxed pace juxtaposed with the attractions of a major city. Sampson has lived and worked here for 14 years. His interest in architecture and urban planning sparked his interest in the history of University Circle. "The architecture is very diverse here, with the Beaux-arts style influencing places like Severance Hall and Tomlinson, combined with modern structures like Peter B. Lewis, the new Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), and the Seidman Cancer Center now," he said. http://www.cwruobserver.com/news/university-circle-earns-top-marks-in-beauty-1.2754586#.TyOazPlc-So
  6. more development...no big deal... Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority to start $3.9 million rail project Published: Thursday, January 26, 2012, 8:00 PM Brie Zeltner, The Plain Dealer By Brie Zeltner, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority has secured funding and a builder for its first capital project in a decade -- a $3.9 million on-dock rail loop that it hopes will continue to drive growth and enhance its competitive edge. And there's good reason to think it will: the port is growing. For the second year in a row, cargo volume is up and is at its highest level since 2008. "This represents the beginning of capital expenditures that we believe will lead to new business," said William Friedman, the Port's chief executive. He joined the organization in 2010 and is overseeing a sweeping strategic plan unveiled in July. The Port Authority manages maritime operations at the Port of Cleveland, which occupies more than 150 acres on both sides of the Cuyahoga River. The port includes eight international cargo docks that move shipments of steel and heavy machinery into and out of the city. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2012/01/port_authority_to_start_39_mil.html

  8. Salisbury steak?? Passenger ferry route between Cleveland and Ontario likely By Jordana Divon | Daily Brew – 3 hours ago Ontarians with a hankering for Salisbury steak may soon find it easier than ever to satisfy their craving. Officials from Cleveland and nearby Port Stanley, Ont. are discussing a passenger ferry that would carry tourists and a select number of trucks across the Lake Erie divide as early as next year. As Ohio's Plain Dealer reports, the two-year pilot project would focus on transporting people and cars in a bid to increase tourism in both areas. http://ca.news.yahoo.com/blogs/dailybrew/passenger-route-between-cleveland-ontario-ferry-likely-205806289.html
  9. The carpet is installed and Cleveland's Horseshoe Casino is ready for slot machines: (video) Published: Wednesday, January 25, 2012, 7:00 PM Dave Davis, The Plain Dealer = Follow CLEVELAND, Ohio--Move over Toledo, you've got nothing on Cleveland -- casino-wise, that is. Just five days after officials at Toledo's Hollywood casino indicated they ought to be the first casino to open in Ohio because construction was pretty much complete except for the carpet, their counterparts at Cleveland's Horseshoe casino upped the ante by showing off a nearly finished casino, complete with new carpet. During a tour Wednesday, two partners in Dan Gilbert's gambling company unveiled what they've done to transform the former Higbee's department store into a full-fledged casino complete with 2,100 slot machines, a 30-table dedicated poker room and 63 table games. "We're ready to go," declared Jeff Cohen, a principal in Rock Gaming LLC who's overseeing the Higbee construction. Rock Gaming has joined with Caesars Entertainment Corp. to build and operate voter-approved casinos in Cleveland and Cincinnati. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2012/01/the_carpet_is_installed_and_cl.html

  13. More talk and discussion: Change of attitude in Canada revives hopes for cross-lake ferry service Published: Tuesday, January 24, 2012, 7:37 AM Regina Garcia Cano, The Plain Dealer The Queen Mary it won't be, but passenger service may finally cross Lake Erie from Cleveland to Canada, possibly by 2013. Authorities on both sides of the border are again talking about ferry service that would dock somewhere near Cleveland Browns Stadium and go back and forth to Port Stanley, Ontario. The idea for a ferry dates back many years. A hurdle that hindered a deal in the past is gone. The city of Central Elgin now owns Port Stanley. The Canadian government transferred the port to the local authorities in late 2010. Before that, the federal government on that side of the border had refused to consent to a transnational agreement to allow for a shuttle. On the American side, nearly $7 million in federal government grants remain earmarked for ships and a terminal for the first Northeast Ohio port city that nails down a ferry deal. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2012/01/post_553.html

  17. Let the dominoes continue to fall! Columbus company plans data center development on city-owned land in Midtown Cleveland Published: Monday, January 23, 2012, 2:00 PM Michelle Jarboe McFee, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The city of Cleveland has its first potential buyer for land that state officials rejected last year for a regional psychiatric hospital project. Superior Technology Partners LLC, based in Columbus, hopes to buy 2.25 acres of the nearly 14-acre site and build a data center there. Cleveland City Council will consider legislation today to give the company an option on land along Chester Avenue between East 61st and East 63rd streets. Now Superior Technology Partners could buy a slice of the property and build a $35 million to $40 million facility, which might comprise 80,000 square feet and create 40 "high-paying jobs," said Tracey Nichols, the city's economic development director. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2012/01/columbus_company_plans_data_ce.html

I'll take it! Superman display coming to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport Published: Monday, January 23, 2012, 6:19 AM Michael Sangiacomo, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- By summer, visitors and returning travelers to Cleveland will be welcomed to the city by its most famous son -- Superman. On Monday night, City Council is expected to vote to allow the Siegel and Shuster Society to install a permanent Superman display in the lower concourse of Cleveland Hopkins International Airport near the baggage retrieval area. "We want Superman to be one of the first things people see when they fly into the airport," said Irving Fine, one of the founders of the society formed to honor Superman and his creators, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster of the Glenville neighborhood. "We want to remind people that Superman was created right here in Cleveland. DC Comics says Superman was born on Krypton, but there was no Krypton until Jerry Siegel created it." http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2012/01/superman_display_coming_to_cle.html

^ Thanks for the pic Enjoy some Sunday actors as the construction gets closer and closer to completion, AND...drumroll...note the opening date: MOCA's Last Hurrah on Carnegie Avenue The end is near for the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland – well, at least for the museum’s current location. MOCA reflects on its impending move from 8501 Carnegie Ave. to 11400 Euclid Ave. with its last exhibition, 8501 to 11400 (On Moving). Ben Kinsley, known for his playful and engaging site-specific performances, has engaged two actors to play street preachers. One actor will stand outside at MOCA’s current location and announce, “The end is nigh!” while the other, in University Circle near the construction site, will proclaim “A new beginning is imminent!” The actors debut the performance tonight and will appear on the street 12:30-1:30 p.m. every Sunday through March 24. They’ll distribute hand-written brochures to witnesses on the street that will contain testimonials about MOCA from visitors but never actually name the museum itself. Sound recordings of this quirky scene will play through the speakers in the exhibition space. The exhibit will run until March 31, when MOCA shuts its doors for the move. It’ll reopen in early October at its new location. http://clevelandmagazine.blogspot.com/2012/01/mocas-last-hurrah-on-carnegie-avenue.html

  24. Cleveland Clinics new Master Plan has been released...and TONS of new construction is in the pipeline. *MAJOR ALARM BELLS ALERT* The plan shows that the Clinic has no regard for its own heritage and calls for the demolition of the original Cleveland Clinic 1921 building, and also the surrounding historic churches. (I'm sure the landmarks commission will know how to vote since they like new construction ) Cleveland Clinic's new master plan envisions bigger, greener campus with ample room to grow for decades Published: Sunday, January 22, 2012, 9:05 PM Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cleveland Clinic is bullish on its hometown. A new master plan completed by Ohio’s third-biggest employer envisions a big, green future for the institution’s 160-acre main campus west of University Circle. The plan, released to The Plain Dealer last month after several requests, shows that the Clinic has room for dramatic growth over the next 30 to 50 years — a prospect that could mean more jobs and economic activity for decades to come. But while the plan offers a stirring glimpse of the Clinic’s future, it does not address how it could also reshape its outer edges, often dominated by surface parking lots, or help spur revitalization around it. The message is that now is not the time for the Clinic to reach out in a more substantial way. Led by Foster + Partners of London, one of the world’s leading architecture firms, the plan proposes organizing the campus around an internal “Green Spine,” a nearly continuous corridor of leafy outdoor plazas modeled loosely on Cleveland’s downtown Mall and on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. http://blog.cleveland.com/architecture/2012/01/cleveland_clinics_new_master_p.html
