It is finished! Dan Gilbert now owns the: Cleveland Cavaliers, Lake Erie Monsters, and Cleveland Gladiators Cleveland Cavaliers finalize purchase of Cleveland Gladiators Published: Monday, January 16, 2012, 8:15 PM Dennis Manoloff, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Dan Gilbert's Cavaliers group has purchased ownership stake in the Arena Football League's Cleveland Gladiators. An official announcement will be made at a news conference Tuesday that is scheduled to include Cavaliers President Len Komoroski, Gladiators special adviser Bernie Kosar and Gladiators owner Jim Ferraro. The Cavaliers almost certainly will be majority owner of the Gladiators, and possibly sole owner -- although the presence of Ferraro on Tuesday indicates he might retain a small percentage. The Gladiators will begin training camp in February; the first practice is Feb. 20. They open the season March 12 at Georgia and at home March 26 against Kansas City. http://www.cleveland.com/gladiators/index.ssf/2012/01/cleveland_cavaliers_finalize_p.html

  5. Regardless of what the vote was, the fact that there are people who are voting with no knowledge of preservation/reuse/history means there's no reason to have a landmarks commission and the system is broken. Even if the vote was 9-0 or 11-0 for demolition, but I knew they were doing their job by logically defending their reason for destruction, I would say "OK it must be the proper decision." BUT when the website of the Landmarks Commission states: The Commission conducts a continuing survey of historic properties within the City for the purposes of designation as a Cleveland Landmark and/or listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The Commission also informs citizens about the architectural and historical heritage of Cleveland. AND the possible tie-breaking vote that brings out the wrecking balls is heard saying "I do like new buildings. I vote demolition"...there is something disgustingly WRONG.
  6. ^Reminder of the only media released names and public knowledge: "University Circle Inc. is considering proposals from three local developers - Coral Co., Snavely Group and NRP Group - to build on Lot 45, a property on Mayfield Road, west of the railroad tracks that border Little Italy. The land, now a parking lot, could be the site of a $30 million to $100 million development involving apartments, retail, a parking garage and, possibly, offices." http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2011/11/university_circle_stretches_it.html

  8. EXACTLY -- the purpose and definition of the landmarks commission is to decide the pros and cons of rehabilitation/preservation. This is an EMBARRASSMENT on so many levels.
  9. Babs is a babe: Power 100: Barbara Snyder By Jennifer Keirn Snyder is building support for the strategic plan the university launched soon after she assumed the presidency in 2007. The plan, which runs through 2013, sets high goals for CWRU’s future — greater selectivity in admissions, more interdisciplinary cooperation, more focus on international student and faculty exchanges and a $1 billion capital campaign to fund scholarships, research and new faculty hires. “What I have as the president of CWRU is the power of persuasion,” Snyder says. “Our success depends on our ability and my ability to persuade people that the work is important and that the university is worth their investment.” The plan is a vision for the future, but it’s also a roadmap to CWRU’s recovery. Snyder arrived five years ago at a university in crisis, where she was the sixth president (including interims) to serve in less than a decade. http://ibmag.com/Main/Archive/Power_100_Barbara_Snyder_12057.aspx
  10. +1 :-) Great! Looks like I do have readers -- much appreciated.
  11. I like the ESPN one much more -- it's more concise, comparative, and easier to read. I like breakdowns of information in you haven't noticed :D
  12. I am completely dumbfounded and stunned. The landmarks commission needs to be disbanded...
  13. Great! Thanks for posting. Feel free to send the link to friends too!
  14. And how Lot 45 screams to be developed.
  15. very sexy images to say the least...
  16. ^ nice find...thanks. I've added it to my list: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,3594.msg596230.html#msg596230
  17. Which site is this? Cross street, please. I'm thinking he means E.69 and Euclid Ave.
  18. I had no idea of this project either...can anyone find a total price tag on this thing?
  19. A house next to the Random Road Lofts parking has been demolished, and the site is seeing the massive foundation blocks being saved. The small property seems ripe for residential new construction, BUT we shall see. EDIT: I've blue-boxed the property I mentioned, which is now cleared for who knows what:
  20. What's going on in University Circle is truly amazing. On a related note, what is going on with some of those large, empty, crumbling buildings on the "backside" of Little Italy (the area near Euclid Avenue)? well for one...a very recent arson fire: http://www.newsnet5.com/dpp/news/local_news/oh_cuyahoga/fire-on-clevelands-east-side-closes-euclid-avenue I've heard rumblings of possible demolition and construction of more townhomes -- as 26 of the 27 Coltman townhomes have sold. BUT I'm guessing this talk will get redirected as off topic! ;)
  21. I'm sitting here in Presti's getting my work done (I know, my UO posts seem to indicate otherwise), when I hear two men in their mid-60's talking about University Circle. One of them seems to be a medical patient here, but both have been gone a long time judging by the conversation. GENTLEMAN NUMBER 1: "I remember when this area used to be a complete warzone. I can't believe what I see." GENTLEMAN NUMBER 2: "I feel like I want to live here now. You don't have this in Tampa..." :-D :drunk:
  22. ArcelorMittal to reopen portion of Flats steel mill, hire 150 new workers Published: Wednesday, January 11, 2012, 1:21 PM Robert Schoenberger, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- ArcelorMittal will reopen a portion of its steel mill in the Flats, bringing 150 new jobs to the area. "Despite the restart of Cleveland's west side, ArcelorMittal USA continues to operate below pre-crisis levels," the company said in a written statement. It added that it still has unused capacity at the mill and could add more work and more jobs in the near future if market demand for steel remains high. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2012/01/arcelormittal_to_reopen_portio.html
  23. Urban farm among 3 groups getting $100,000 grants to fight hunger in Northeast Ohio Published: Wednesday, January 11, 2012, 12:10 PM Dave Davis, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- An urban farm in Cleveland's Kinsman neighborhood started by three childhood friends was one of three local groups to receive $100,000 grants from the Walmart Foundation today. The grants to the Rid-All Green Partnership, the Cleveland Foodbank and Junior Achievement of Greater Cleveland were part of Walmart's five-year $2 billion initiative aimed at hunger and children in need. In the last two days, the Walmart foundation officials have crisscrossed the state awarding more than $1 million to a dozen Ohio groups. "This isn't the only thing Walmart does for the Cleveland Foodbank," said Bill Coquillette, the president of the foodbank's board of trustees. "They also donate food, a lot of food, more than 1 million pounds a year." Foodbank officials said the $100,000 donation will be used for their children's nutrition programs, which they are planning to increase by 15 percent this year to feed 6,000 children. The money will help fund programs that provide about 600,000 meals over weekends, after school and during the summer. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2012/01/urban_farm_among_three_groups.html

I experienced the same thing when I was in Holland. I was sitting around a dinner table, when the father asked me, "Mike, do you like the Blink 182 song "F@(% a dog?" My daughter let me hear it yesterday, and I thought it was funny." Yet this is the same father who would reprimand his children for swearing in Dutch. The simple answer is, swear words do not sound as bad when heard in a foreign language. They almost sound like fun, play words used for/by children instead.
  25. Link? Is it downtown or at some wharehouse? Details...I need to know where I can get some terrible desk lamps. It's at the hotel itself. Here's a link: http://www.wkyc.com/money/article/224370/16/Cleveland-Hotel-to-hold-liquidation-sale
