  1. Some good quotes here: Gem Dandy Zack Bruell's Cowell & Hubbard to open in February by Douglas Trattner When Bruell opens Cowell & Hubbard — his fifth Cleveland eatery — in late February, he will be giving the neighborhood's one million annual theatergoers a first-rate pre- or post-curtain dinner option. He'll also provide upscale lunches to the many folks who work in and around Playhouse Square. "The challenge is to not be a 'theater restaurant,'" says Bruell, "but to be a restaurant for regular diners who happen to be in the Theater District. "I believe this is one of the next neighborhoods to pop," he says of Playhouse Square. http://www.clevescene.com/cleveland/gem-dandy/Content?oid=2792639

  5. Seems like a smaller film...but let the good times roll Another Movie Set to Be Filmed in Cleveland in February By Julie Kent. Published on 01/10/2012 - 5:18pm For a few months last year, it seemed like one movie after another was filming here in Cleveland. There was "The Avengers", "Fun Size", and "I, Alex Cross", just to name a few. It appears as though the trend will continue in 2012, as word now comes that a new movie is set to film in Cleveland next month. So far little is known about the movie, which is currently known as "Hall of Fame", other than it will start filming downtown next month. News of the film arose when an email from Lillian Pyles Casting was released to a people who were involved with a previous project in Cleveland. The email didn't give away much about the movie, other than offering up a list of characters to be featured in the film. Much of the email is about the casting process for the film. http://www.clevelandleader.com/node/18059

CWRU to establish on-campus response team: Higher Education Published: Tuesday, January 10, 2012, 7:55 AM Karen Farkas, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio - Case Western Reserve University is establishing an on-campus Community Emergency Response Team. Response teams, which have been created in several cities and counties in Northeast Ohio, and at Cleveland State University, are small groups of volunteers trained to serve as auxiliary first-responders during disasters. CWRU received a $568,090 grant from the U.S. Department of Education Safe and Drug Free Schools, Emergency Management for Higher Education program in 2010. The CWRU team will include up to 50 employees, who are currently being recruited. According to the university, those accepted into the program will learn about fire safety, hazardous material, terrorist incidents, search and rescue and disaster medical services. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2012/01/case_western_reserve_universit_31.html

Holy $H!T!!! Gladiators owner Jim Ferraro confirms talks with Cavaliers group about sale of AFL franchise Published: Monday, January 09, 2012, 1:35 PM Dennis Manoloff, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Gladiators owner Jim Ferraro confirmed Monday that he is negotiating to sell the Arena Football League franchise to Dan Gilbert's Cavaliers. Ferraro termed the talks "serious.'' "We're in direct contact with the powers-that-be at the Cavaliers operating company,'' Ferraro said by phone from his Miami, Fla.-based law firm. "If this is going to happen at all, it's going to happen very quickly, because the season's right around the corner. "The sooner we make the change -- if we make the change -- the better for everybody. Personally, I'd like to bring it to a head within a week to 10 days.'' The Gladiators are scheduled to begin training camp in February. They open the season March 12 at Georgia and at home March 26 against Kansas City. http://www.cleveland.com/gladiators/index.ssf/2012/01/gladiators_owner_jim_ferraro_c.html
  10. Cleveland Catholic Diocese shares financial report on closed parishes Published: Monday, January 09, 2012, 12:21 PM Dave Davis, The Plain Dealer By Dave Davis, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cleveland Catholic Diocese received $19.5 million related to the closing of parishes as part of a diocese-wide downsizing. That includes about $10 million transferred from closed parishes and $7.6 million from the sale of parish properties. The remainder came from miscellaneous sources such as the sale of religious items and rental income. Cleveland Bishop Richard Lennon promised today that the money would go to support local parishes. Lennon offered the community an update in the wake of the reconfiguration that closed and merged parishes across the diocese. So far, $4.9 million of the proceeds have gone toward closing expenses and paying debts of the parishes that were closed, a report released today by the diocese shows. Another $7.8 million has been distributed to local parishes and charities they support, and $6.8 million is being held by the diocese for future use. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2012/01/cleveland_catholic_diocese_sha.html

  13. Hearing today on Cleveland's proposed trash disposal plant Plant would destroy trash with high heat; environmentalists are against it By Tom Moore, Newsradio WTAM 1100 (Cleveland) -- A public hearing will be held Monday night on the city of Cleveland's proposal to build a plant that will destroy trash to generate electricity. The hearing will be conducted by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, which will rule on the city's permit application, and the Cleveland Divison of Air Quality. It's set for Monday, 6:00 p.m., at the Estabrook Recreation Center at 4125 Fulton Road. The city says that at the plant, proposed to be at the waste transfer station on Ridge Road, they will use high temperatures to turn waste into trash and steam. Ash pellets would eventually be burned to generate some of the power supplied by Cleveland Public Power. http://www.wtam.com/cc-common/news/sections/newsarticle.html?feed=122520&article=9583557#ixzz1iyZI0g2c
  14. 9000 CWRU students on winter break! In other news... Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum renovation back on road: Whatever Happened To ...? Published: Sunday, January 01, 2012, 6:00 AM John Mangels, The Plain Dealer After a brief hitch, the plans are back on track, with construction expected to begin in January, reports Gainor Davis, president of the museum's operator, the Western Reserve Historical Society. The Crawford, located in a downstairs wing of the historical society's University Circle headquarters, closed in September in preparation for its roughly $3.4 million makeover. During a three-week period, workers carefully loaded the vintage cars, airplanes, motorcycles and other vehicles in the museum's collection into moving trucks. "The hardest part of it was moving the planes," which required removing their wings, said Davis. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2012/01/crawford_auto-aviation_museum.html

  16. Home loan program to encourage artists in Cleveland's Waterloo Road area: Whatever happened to ...? Published: Sunday, January 08, 2012, 12:00 PM Thomas Ott, The Plain Dealer Details about the Artists in Residence program will be released over the next three weeks, starting today, according to Seth Beattie of the Community Partnership for Arts and Culture, also known as CPAC. The Northeast Ohio agency is administering the two-year program with the Northeast Shores Development Corp., a nonprofit that works to rejuvenate Waterloo and other parts of the Collinwood neighborhood. The groups have raised almost all of the $250,000 required to match an amount awarded during the summer by New York-based Leveraging Investments in Creativity. Organizers also have reached agreement with a lender that would make $150,000 in small, low-interest loans. The loans probably will total $5,000 to $15,000, Beattie said. Artists would use the money for renovation projects that a lender might not ordinarily cover -- for example, building or soundproofing a studio. Artists who live or work in the neighborhood also could apply for grants of up to $7,500 for neighborhood projects. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2012/01/home_loan_program_to_encourage.html
  17. Rethinking Cuyahoga County's space could lead to benefits, direct and indirect: editorial Published: Saturday, January 07, 2012, 11:15 AM The Plain Dealer Editorial Board For far too long, Cuyahoga County's pre-charter government accumulated property like a hoarder. Think of it as yet another unintended consequence of too many fiefs and too little accountability. When consultants hired by County Executive Ed FitzGerald presented their preliminary report in late December, they identified 66 properties that the county either owns or leases, and concluded that fully a third are so extraneous or such money pits that they should be jettisoned. But if Cuyahoga County can execute its moves well, it has a chance both to save money and make a broader economic impact. By vacating its current, nondescript administration building, the county can open up a potentially valuable piece of property adjacent to the new convention center and medical mart complex. http://www.cleveland.com/opinion/index.ssf/2012/01/rethinking_cuyahoga_countys_sp.html
  18. Lighting up Cleveland State University: editorial Published: Sunday, January 08, 2012, 7:56 PM The Plain Dealer Editorial Board Cleveland State University's plan to build a 30-foot beacon of brushed stainless steel may seem a bit like grandstanding, especially given its $100,000 price tag. But thanks to two CSU presidents intent on upgrading their neighborhood with an expanded and more inviting downtown campus, it's a great way to put out the welcome mat for an urban university slowly abolishing the notion that there is no "there" there. The beacon, to be paid for with university capital funds, will bear the name Cleveland State University and go up by April on the south side of Euclid Avenue, just east of the university's new student housing complex. The university will put three more beacons at its borders if it can find donors to pay for them. Alumni should take on this worthwhile project. http://www.cleveland.com/opinion/index.ssf/2012/01/lighting_up_cleveland_state_un.html
  19. Good review from the PD: The guide 'new to Cleveland' is smart, elegant and self-published Published: Sunday, January 08, 2012, 6:37 PM Karen R. Long, The Plain Dealer Out of harsh experience, I approach self-published books like an extra in "The Hurt Locker." It took writer Justin Glanville, artist Julia Kuo and designer Lee Zelenak to school me on how this route can lead to a happy ending. Their collaboration, "new to Cleveland: a Guide to (Re)Discovering the City" is a marvel -- elegant, casual, informative, smart. Released last month, the book is a refreshing step away from civic Babbitry. It squares up to the vacant lots, foreclosures and poverty here, but also makes a compelling, neighborhood-by-neighborhood case that Cleveland is an increasingly hip, engaging bargain for those with eyes to see. "To live in Cleveland is in some ways an endorsement of a different set of values: a kind of DIY, community-oriented ethos that's not too concerned with what the coasts think," writes Glanville. "Living in Cleveland is a bit nonconformist. (Fun, right?)" http://www.cleveland.com/books/index.ssf/2012/01/the_guide_new_to_cleveland_is.html
  20. Cleveland Play House's new Second Stage theater shows off its flexibility Published: Sunday, January 08, 2012, 5:59 AM Andrea Simakis, The Plain Dealer Imagine a stage that can change its shape like a gleaming Transformer. For most stage designers and directors, the idea of such a tricked-out performance space is as unlikely as a car turning into a chatty robot -- something best left to special-effects wizards in Hollywood. But thanks to a savvy alliance among PlayhouseSquare, the Cleveland Play House, Cleveland State University and a handful of creative architects, when "Ten Chimneys" begins previews on Friday, the new Second Stage will rate as one of the few fully flexible theaters in the country. Three, to be exact. "Lots of theaters will tell you they have a flexible theater," said Play House artistic director Michael Bloom. "But then when you ask them, 'How long does it take to change from one show to another?' they'll say, 'Well, it takes about a week.' But that's not really a flexible theater, that's just an open space." Not to brag, but Cleveland's Second Stage can go from zero seats to more than 300 in two hours. And it won't take the sweat of a crew of burly technicians to do it, either. Two teenage drama students can pull it off. http://www.cleveland.com/arts/index.ssf/2012/01/cleveland_play_houses_new_seco.html

  22. Greater Cleveland Aquarium tanks are designed like movie sets Published: Saturday, January 07, 2012, 5:15 AM Regina Garcia Cano, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Fish won't be the only things inside the tanks at the Greater Cleveland Aquarium. How about lots of glitz. Bright green, red and yellow artificial corals and rocks dress up the enclosures. There is even a shipwreck inside the largest of the 40 tanks. "It's like a movie set," said aquarium artist David Stewart. That maybe shouldn't be a surprising comment from Stewart, since his previous job was as a film-set designer in his native New Zealand. A team of five artists from the aquarium's developer, New Zealand-based Marinescape NZ Ltd., have worked for the past five months on the interior design of the tanks. They also created the props and setting for the aquarium's alligator pit. The aquarium on the west bank of the Flats, is the developer's first in the United States. The $33 million project will occupy half of the Powerhouse's 70,000 square feet. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2012/01/aquarium_tanks_are_like_movie.html
  23. Ohio EPA to hold hearing on proposed Cleveland trash plant Published: Saturday, January 07, 2012, 12:56 PM Thomas Ott, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A public hearing will be held Tuesday on Cleveland's plans to build a trash-disposal plant on Ridge Road. City officials who support the project say the plant will not directly burn trash but instead will use high temperatures to turn it into ash and steam. Pellets formed from the ash would be sold or used to provide some of the electricity supplied by Cleveland Public Power. Supporters say the plant would be part of a comprehensive trash disposal strategy that would also include citywide recycling. They say the plant would produce safe emissions and save on the cost of hauling garbage to distant landfills. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2012/01/ohio_epa_to_hold_hearing_on_pr.html
