  1. Cleveland: Opposition against trash burning plant 11:50 PM, Jan 3, 2012 Written by Dave Summers CLEVELAND - The city says it's good for the environment and will save money but environmental advocates fear it will do just the opposite. "There are no odors associated with it," Cleveland Utilities Commissioner Ivan Henderson said. "It has a very positive impact on the community and doesn't have any harmful pollutants associated with it." Ohio Citizen Action and other watchdog groups are organizing a protest of the Cleveland plant. http://www.wkyc.com/news/article/223088/45/Cleveland-Opposition-against-trash-burning-plant--

  3. And 500,000 gallons later... Shark tank is filled with water as opening day nears for Greater Cleveland Aquarium Published: Thursday, January 05, 2012, 5:15 AM Regina Garcia Cano, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- We're getting close. The Greater Cleveland Aquarium's feature attraction -- a 150-foot-long walk-through tank -- was declared ready for occupancy Wednesday, and 500,000 gallons of water was poured in. Next will come the fish. The 15 sharks and assorted other creatures due to reside in the 4,738-square-foot enclosure will arrive by truck in two weeks. Opening day of Cleveland's newest sight quickly follows on Saturday, Jan. 21. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2012/01/shark_tank_get_filled_with_wat.html
  4. Does anyone think there are political reasons for holding up the opening? There obviously isn't a funding or construction problem. Too bad for the people expecting to start their jobs in March, not to mention the missed taxes for the city of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County. Plus, Cleveland will be in the national spotlight April 14 with the RRHOF Induction Ceremony...the Casino was supposed to be open for this...
  5. From the Plain Dealer...F@$% you Columbus.... Grand openings of Cleveland and Toledo casinos delayed by state officials Published: Wednesday, January 04, 2012, 10:00 PM Updated: Thursday, January 05, 2012, 12:11 AM Reginald Fields, The Plain Dealer By Reginald Fields, The Plain Dealer COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The opening of casinos in Cleveland and Toledo will be delayed for several weeks, and likely much longer, because the required background checks on the gaming operators and vendors are well behind schedule. The Ohio Casino Control Commission received the sobering news during its meeting on Wednesday from its consultant, Spectrum Gaming Group, as representatives of the casino operators, Rock Ohio Caesars and Penn National Gaming Inc., looked on. Neither operator commented publicly at the meeting but were clearly disappointed. Each day the gambling spots are not open could cost the operators a combined $1.4 million, according to a Plain Dealer analysis of revenue projections from state and company officials. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2012/01/grand_openings_of_cleveland_an.html

Cleveland, Toledo casinos are delayed By David Eggert The Columbus Dispatch Wednesday January 4, 2012 1:39 PM Openings of Ohio's first two casinos this spring will be pushed back — possibly by at least two months because of delays in the licensing process. The Casino Control Commission was told today that the state does not enough time to properly investigate casinos in Cleveland and Toledo before their proposed opening dates. http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/2012/01/04/Cleveland-Toledo-casinos-delayed_.html
  8. Article from the Scene: 2011: The Year We Did Not Suck Two dozen reasons to be proud you were a Clevelander this year It's easy to get caught up in the dreary headlines and bitter economic news that seem to dominate our particular corner of the galaxy these days. We're here to remind you that there's also plenty to be thankful for throughout our own humble burg — signs of life, signs of growth, and signs of prosperity that backwater towns like New York and Pittsburgh would love to see right about now. In ways both remarkable and routine, this was a very good year for Northeast Ohio — and one that bodes well for a solid run into 2012 and beyond. As we raise our glass of cheap champagne in honor of the year gone by, here are a few of the memories we'll be calling to mind. http://www.clevescene.com/gyrobase/2011-the-year-we-did-not-suck/Content?oid=2784680&showFullText=true

  11. Good idea. I also think Cleveland should have the following museums/showcases: - Superman Museum - Victor Schreckengost - Jesse Owens? - Harvey Pekar I was recently at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, and this jogged my brain to why Cleveland doesn't have anything similar for its people who affected the world/USA. - There is also ZERO historic maker where the world's first electric traffic light that was installed at E.105 and Euclid Ave. - Even a Life Saver Candy Museum could add a fun element! The Crane family who invented the candy lived in University Circle (there is a historic marker on E. 115th and Euclid Ave)...Drumroll...another UC destination?? Cleveland has a rich history that is very much so left un-showcased.

  25. Some national news coverage: Cleveland gets first roll of casino dice in Ohio (AP) CLEVELAND — Visitors to Ohio's first casino won't see glitzy Las Vegas-style stage shows but instead will get an invitation to gamble and then sample the attractions in blue-collar Cleveland. The Horseshoe Casino Cleveland will open in late March on four floors of a renovated department store overlooking Public Square in the heart of downtown. The casino will have 2,011 slot machines, 63 table games and a 30-table poker room. Instead of offering in-house live entertainment, the casino will bet on drawing visitors who are also interested in other Cleveland attractions including its sports teams, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and its busy theater scene. "Rather than saying, 'Come to Horseshoe Cleveland' and just come into the casino and stay the entire time, we're actually connecting to the city," the casino's manager, Marcus Glover, said during a year-end construction tour interview. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-505245_162-57348287/cleveland-gets-first-roll-of-casino-dice-in-ohio/
