  2. What are the arguments to not renewing this thing?? Movies made in Cleveland and Ohio: 'Avengers,' 'Fun Size,' 'Alex Cross' and others made for booming 2011, what's up for 2012 and beyond? Published: Sunday, December 18, 2011, 5:30 AM Updated: Sunday, December 18, 2011, 9:30 AM Clint O'Connor, The Plain Dealer By Clint O'Connor, The Plain Dealer When "The Avengers" blasts into thousands of theaters on May 4 to kick off Hollywood's summer movie season, most audiences won't be playing can-you-spot-Cleveland. Although a chunk of the action flick was shot here over the summer with a bevy of explosions on East Ninth Street, the city was masquerading as New York and other locales. The collaboration between Marvel Studios and Disney didn't come to town for our lovely climate and lake views. It came for one reason: to save millions thanks to Ohio's Motion Picture Tax Credit. And by most accounts, using Cleveland as a backlot was a winning experience, creating temporary jobs and pumping dollars into the local economy. But the release of "The Avengers" in 2012 was supposed to serve as a high-profile example marking the beginnings of Ohio's new role as an annual player in film production -- not its end. 9. Another unique donation I seemed to have missed before: World War II aviator and nurse Dorothy Ebersbach gives CWRU $2 million for flight nurse program Published: Thursday, December 08, 2011, 6:26 AM Updated: Thursday, December 08, 2011, 9:07 AM Karen Farkas, The Plain Dealer By Karen Farkas, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- An aviator who served in the Women Airforce Service Pilots during World War II, then spent her career as a nurse, has donated $2 million to a Case Western Reserve University program that encompasses both of her passions -- flight nursing. The Dorothy Ebersbach Academic Center for Flight Nursing will be established at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, where Ebersbach earned a nursing degree in 1954. She died last month at 96. The center will expand the Advanced Practice Flight Nurse Program's mission of training graduate-level nursing students to provide on-site care during emergencies and transport to medical facilities. She worked for her father's construction company in Tampa, Fla., a job that required her to learn how to fly an airplane. She earned a commercial pilot's license at the University of Tampa. After the United States entered World War II, she applied to and was selected to be a member of the Women Airforce Service Pilots, or WASPs. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/12/case_western_reserve_universit_30.html

  14. No big deal....just another new multi-million dollar project in UC underway. Groundwork begins for Courtyard by Marriott at University Circle By STAN BULLARD 12:05 pm, December 15, 2011 Workers this week started stripping asphalt from a parking lot near the southeast corner of Euclid Avenue and Cornell Road to launch construction of a $27 million Courtyard by Marriott hotel in University Circle. Building the 153-room hotel caps a quest that University Circle Inc. and University Hospitals began in the summer of 2008 to add a hotel to the city's cultural, medical and entertainment district. The project is a joint venture by Snavely Group of Chagrin Falls and Concord Hospitality Enterprises Inc. of Raleigh, N.C. Snavely will construct the property and Concord will manage it. Funds from six sources were used to assemble the $27 million financing package to build the hotel, said Pete Snavely, president of the family-owned development and construction firm. The project incorporates Cleveland and Cuyahoga County loans, funds raised through federal new market tax credits and construction union pension funds. The eight-story hotel is expected to open late next year, said Mr. Snavely, who estimates nearly 150 workers will be on the project site at its busiest in late summer. http://crainscleveland.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=%2F20111215%2FFREE%2F111219899

  19. City officials vow to press on with shoreway project despite ODOT obstructionism Thursday, December 08, 2011 When Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) officials recently asked business leaders from across the state to rank their region's planned infrastructure projects by importance, the Greater Cleveland Partnership ranked the West Shoreway project as the number one priority for Northeast Ohio. For City of Cleveland Planning Director Bob Brown, that's one more reason why ODOT's numbers don't add up. The state agency gave the city 0 out of 10 points in the "economic development" category on its recent application for $28 million in additional funding to complete Phase II of the project. "States all across the country are beginning to think differently, and they're realizing that projects like this can actually improve their economic competitiveness," Brown said at a recent community meeting to discuss the project. The 10-year-old plan would transform the underutilized, 50s-style freeway into a landscaped boulevard with bicycle and pedestrian pathways. It would also offer residents and visitors improved access to Lake Erie. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/devnews/westshorewayproject120811.aspx

Cleveland backers of West Shoreway boulevard plan head to Columbus (video) Published: Thursday, December 15, 2011, 10:25 AM Updated: Thursday, December 15, 2011, 11:32 AM Plain Dealer staff By Plain Dealer staff CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A contingent of Clevelanders boarded buses before dawn today to travel to Columbus in the hopes of convincing the Ohio Department of Transportation that plans to convert the West Shoreway to a boulevard should go forward. City leaders circulated petitions and organized the trip after ODOT staffers indicated it would be unlikely that the agency would free up the $28.2 million needed for the second phase of the project. The group was headed to a mid-morning meeting of an advisory body to ODOT that will issue a draft list of highway projects, by phases, to receive a chunk of $100 million over the next four years. The list will be finalized in March. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/12/backers_of_west_shoreway_boule.html
  21. So sad for St. Stanislaus...this may be the end of Polish Mass in Cleveland as we know it. This beautiful cathedral is the last lifeblood of the remaining Polish community.... Franciscans leaving Cleveland's Shrine Church of St. Stanislaus after century of service Published: Thursday, December 15, 2011, 6:00 AM By Michael O'Malley, The Plain Dealer The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- After 105 years of service, the Franciscan order of priests is leaving the Shrine Church of St. Stanislaus, a historically Polish parish in Cleveland's Slavic Village neighborhood. "Our numbers are diminishing and we're aging," said the Rev. Michael Surufka, 53, pastor of the parish for the last nine years. "The bottom line is we just don't have the men." The Assumption Province of the Franciscan order, based in Wisconsin, is transferring Surufka to Chicago where he will serve as a director of vocations, recruiting men to the priesthood. Four friars -- three priests and a brother -- will continue running St. Stanislaus until July, at which time the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland will take over. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/12/franciscans_leaving_st_stanisl.html
