  1. HUGE international conference this week. Here's a link to the conference: http://www.clevelandclinic.org/innovations/summit/ Check out the line up of speakers: Cleveland Clinic's Medical Innovation Summit opens Monday Published: Sunday, October 02, 2011, 5:40 AM By Angela Townsend, The Plain Dealer The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio — It's a gathering of technology, medicine and business that over the years has grown in international stature. Now in its ninth year, the assemblage will include machine matching wits with man and various arms of industry associations and competing businesses appearing -- in some cases, for the first time -- side by side. More than 1,000 health-care leaders from across the country are convening in Cleveland this week through Wednesday to discuss emerging cardiovascular technologies at a hospital system widely regarded to have one of the best heart care programs in the world. The Medical Innovation Summit, sponsored by the Cleveland Clinic, opens later today at the InterContinental Hotel on the Clinic's main campus. Registration for the event has closed. The Clinic will announce its list of the top 10 medical innovations for 2012 on Wednesday, the summit's last day. The innovations are culled from nearly 150 medical breakthroughs that Clinic doctors nominated for the honor last spring. The list is meant to signify advances that will most likely reshape health care in the coming year. http://www.cleveland.com/healthfit/index.ssf/2011/10/cleveland_clinics_medical_inno.html

  3. I forgot to report this earlier. Little Italy is installing new Bocce courts at the Alta House. They tore out the old ones last month after the neighborhood bocce tournament. I've heard the total price tag will be $110K.
  4. whoa, I walk in the streets sometimes too when it's really bad. IMO, the Little Italy Development Corp could have the most power in fixing the mudslide. Mucky mess covers doorstep to Cleveland's Little Italy: Road Rant Published: Thursday, September 29, 2011, 3:50 PM John Horton, The Plain Dealer By John Horton, The Plain Dealer Roger Coakley knows to avoid the porcheria when he visits Cleveland's Little Italy neighborhood. Judging from the footprints in the muck, many don't. A thick layer of glop -- best translated as porcheria -- coats Mayfield Road's northern sidewalk beneath a railroad bridge just east of East 117th Street, according to Road Rant lookout Roger Coakley. The muddy goop poses a "significant challenge" for those entering Little Italy on foot from the University Circle area. (Tip: Leave those fancy Ferragamo loafers and pumps in the closet.) Coakley says he'll sometimes walk in the street under the bridge to avoid trudging through the recurring mess that dates back years. There's also a sidewalk running along the south side of the street, but the nearest crosswalk is a block west. http://www.cleveland.com/roadrant/index.ssf/2011/09/mucky_mess_covers_doorstep_to.html

  6. From rumblings on campus, it sounds like 2012. I have no idea exactly when. According to the most recent article: "Site preparation will start in the spring of 2012, and the building is scheduled for completion by August 2014. " http://blog.cleveland.com/architecture/2011/04/architect_ralph_johnson_of_per.html
  7. Historic detroit-shoreway building to undergo $3m renovation Thursday, September 29, 2011 The 22-unit Sylvia apartment building has been an eyesore ever since it became vacant two years ago when the building's owner died unexpectedly. With nobody to care for the property, Detroit Shoreway neighbors watched as the vacant building, which is nestled mid-block on Franklin Boulevard, fell into disrepair. Beginning this fall, however, nearby homeowners should have something to celebrate: The Sylvia is slated to receive a $3 million makeover that will preserve this historic structure while adding new neighbors to this well-kept block. The Sylvia, which features a brick facade, hardwood floors, built-in kitchen display cases, and Tudor archways and doorways, will be trimmed to an 18-unit, mixed income building following a complete renovation by the Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization (DSCDO). http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/devnews/historicsylviarenovation092911.aspx
  8. School of Medicine receives $1.5 million grant from Cleveland Foundation Posted: September 29th, 2011 | Author: thedaily | Filed under: news | No Comments » Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine has been awarded a $1.5 million grant by the Cleveland Foundation to support the Case Western Reserve University Cleveland Center for Membrane and Structural Biology (CCMSB), a successful outgrowth of the Cleveland Center for Structural Biology and Case Center for Proteomics that were both previously supported by the Cleveland Foundation. This grant award will help increase the capacity of the existing CCMSB through faculty recruitment and research support, to capitalize on and streamline research and educational activities currently underway. Ultimately, the partnership of the Cleveland Foundation will advance the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine’s goal of growing the CCMSB into a comprehensive, inter-institutional research center aimed at accelerating the discovery of therapeutic agents to slow, prevent or even reverse an array of diseases and conditions. In addition to the $1.5 million grant to support the CCMSB, the Cleveland Foundation also awarded a separate grant of $80,000 to support continued planning around the university’s collaboration with the China National Off-shore Oil Company – New Energy Investment Co. Ltd. (CNOOC – NEI) to create a U.S.–China Collaboration Platform. http://thedaily.case.edu/news/?p=2770

  11. Hope this thing and the wind turbines get built: Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson heading to Japan to view trash-plant technology Published: Friday, September 23, 2011, 7:00 PM Updated: Saturday, September 24, 2011, 3:13 AM Thomas Ott, The Plain Dealer By Thomas Ott, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson will head for Japan early Sunday to study a system that converts garbage into electricity as the city awaits state permission to build a $150 million plant employing such technology. Jackson will observe the "thermal gasification" process developed by the Kinsei Sangyo Co. of Takasaki. He also will try to demonstrate that Cleveland's project is viable, so the Japanese government will allow Kinsei to bid on it. MSW Public Hearing Presentation Revised 2-23-11.pdf Thermal gasification involves the use high temperatures to convert trash -- minus recycled material -- to synthetic gas. The gas is burned to produce steam that powers turbines. Cleveland views the technology as a clean waste-disposal alternative that can provide 6 percent of Cleveland Public Power's peak load and save the city $6 million a year in landfill fees. Public-interest groups have questioned the city's claims of low emissions and environmental benefits. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/09/jackson_heading_to_japan_to_vi.html

  13. Here's the devolopers website we can keep an eye on. Nothing really here yet. The four story building on the page may look similar to what is being built...? http://polaris-realestate.com/project-under-development/cleveland-state-university/
  14. And only 3 of the buildings will be ready for 2012, according to this article: http://www.csuohio.edu/class/com/clevelandstater/Copy/121512.html The Campus Village will have nine buildings all together. The first three buildings will be completed in fall of 2012. The following year the other six buildings will come on line, stated by Joe Mosbrook, Director, Strategic Communications at Cleveland State University.
  15.   Zimzolla, Obviously, we're requesting the entire building be saved, but has there been any University discussion with at least saving the facade??
  16. UPDATE: I was given a mini tour of the new Tudor Arms Doubletree Hotel: - They haven't advertised yet and they were 1/3 occupied when I was there. - Ballrooms are stunning. - Pool in the basement is still being restored, and should be ready sometime next year. I'm happy to report the addition of a new restaurant, Canopy, is almost open is will have good Mediterranean cuisine. When I was there, the bar was open, and I ate the best homemade hummus and baba ganoush I've ever had in Cleveland. According to this article, they will be having outdoor seating and patio early next year: Guests and passersby are welcome at the hotel’s restaurant and barroom, the Canopy, Mina said. The restaurant serves Mediterranean and American-style food and there are plans to add outdoor dining. http://www.neighborhood-voice.com/business/hotel-opened-in-historic-building/
  17. Not to my knowledge unfortunately. I'm about 95% sure it'll be mostly for the student athletes and students. I have seen poeple use the Case Stadium and/or track before for exercise and unofficial events.

  22. This was posted in the Richman Brothers Development thread, but here is it in case you're not reading through every thread! Here's the video airing in China, trying to get Chinese investment money to come to Cleveland: "When we talk to people in China, they never heard of Cleveland," Derek Ng said. "We have to make them excited. We have to make them say, "I want to know about that city!" So the father-son team designed a greeting. They created a video now airing on television channels that reach Macau, Hong Kong and the Cantonese-speaking regions of southern China. They created a five-minute infomercial that depicts a scenic, diverse, lakefront world. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/09/cleveland_developers_say_hello.html
  23. Burnham, What about this one? http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,17526.0.html
  24. I'm very excited about the recent Chinese investment. $100 million for live work transformation would create a new beacon in the area. There would be potential looks for spinoff immediately.
